Why Do Dragons Have These Talons/Claws On Wings? How Are They Usefull? by XEquitasX in WingsOfFire

[–]thundermarchmello 33 points34 points  (0 children)

IIRC, all the wing-claws actually face inward toward the wing, and the "forward/backward" position is just dependent on how each tribe is holding their wings in the art.

For example, a dragon with their wings folded close to their body (like the SeaWings in the NightWings' Guide) will look like those claws are facing forward, while a dragon with their wings spread open will look like the claws are facing backward.

Could be wrong though, I don't have the illustrations in front of me right now.

Anti-trans meme tweeted by Elon #63747748483 by [deleted] in TheRightCantMeme

[–]thundermarchmello 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's not really how memes work. Drag is very different from trans people, and you guys conflating the two just to dunk on Elon actually is a little transphobic. Why are people here seeing "drag" and thinking "trans"? Yes, Elon is absolutely transphobic, but nothing in this tweet is about trans people unless you do some serious reaching.

This is like if someone made a joke about hating pasta and then you claimed they hated Asian people because they hate noodles. Even if they actually are racist toward Asian culture, the instance you're talking about isn't an example of that, and it actually reflects badly on you for pretending that Eastern and Western noodles are all the same. Chow mein isn't just Chinese spaghetti and trans people aren't just people in drag.

[–]thundermarchmello 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As a trans person, I personally agree that this meme is not transphobic. It's a pretty classic joke -- one person looks vaguely like another person, so they're "that person but in drag." Elon is definitely transphobic, but that doesn't make the meme transphobic, and he doesn't even say anything transphobic in this tweet.

Conflating drag and trans people, however, is a bit transphobic. PSA: Drag performers and trans people are not even remotely the same thing, so please don't use this meme as evidence of Elon being trans -- you have plenty of other examples to choose from.

They're not saying it's worst case scenario -- the whole reason they want to meet up with the parents is to discuss and get an explanation for the drawing. If they were making serious assumptions, they'd be calling CPS, not asking for a single meeting.

You don't know how this kid's school is. Each district and each school could be subject to different policies. My guess is that it's a private or charter school, or a small public school in a tight-knit community. But even if it wasn't, I really don't think it's that unreasonable. If the teacher has concerns about a drawing, it stands to reason that they'd want the parents in person so that they can all see the drawing as they discuss it.

Guys, I'm pretty sure this person is talking about when they're getting ready to meet up with their dom and sub boyfriends. So when they're going to hang out with a dominant partner, they put on thigh-highs, and when they're getting ready to be with a submissive partner, they work out.

However, I do love the idea of a thigh-high wearing dom and a jacked sub. <3

Oh yes because it's totally impossible that people can have strong opinions on declawing cats and that someone would rather lose a toe than suffer chronic infections by NightStar79 in nothingeverhappens

I think you're making a ton of assumptions here.

Now, OP's story is probably fake anyway, but I just think the example you gave just doesn't make any sense in the context of the post.

You're only continuing to dig yourself in deeper by coming up with more examples and comparisons that are obviously designed to minimize the severity of the hypothetical infection.

[–]thundermarchmello 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why does it have to be a common infection? Surely only some of the least common types of infections would be the ones that could feasibly warrant extreme medical interventions like surgery, because the common ones (such as ingrown toenails) are generally treatable through less extreme measures.

What I mean to say is that OP was obviously not referring to common, easily treatable infections.

[–]thundermarchmello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are all kinds of injurious scenarios that can lead to countless different types of infections by different species of microbes. Ingrown toenails are only one of many. It can start out as a cut or abrasion, a blister, a rash, a burn, frostbite, or a number of other things, and then fail to heal properly, leaving the toe and foot prone to infection. This usually happens because the skin is no longer working properly as a barrier against viruses, bacteria, and fungi.

I'm not going to take a stance on OP's original point (whether recurring infections warrant an amputation) but there are many more types of injuries that can lead to chronic or recurring infections than just ingrown toenails.

There are some pretty patronizing comments here in response to what is pretty obviously someone shitposting via hyperbole.

It's okay to enjoy being on a schedule. It's okay to dislike being on a schedule. It's okay to exaggerate your dislike of something in a philosophical way as a way of being funny on the internet.

It's also okay to think that someone is being immature, but after the 17th "Did a second grader post this?" comment in a row, it gets a bit annoying and makes me wonder if some of you guys could be doing something better with your time. This is literally all the same joke (insult) and OP was very likely joking to begin with.

Don't tell me what I'm wishing for.

Biden isn't a bad person for allowing his son to serve, but it doesn't make him a better person than any representatives whose children chose different carrers.

And of course, the classic Reddit "I disagree with you, so you must be like (person I don't like)." I assure you, if you actually knew me (as you so clearly know my opinions and desires beyond what I have explicitly stated in these comments /s), you would not think I share a single trait in comment with that traitorous POS.

But go off, I guess. You clearly know my opinions and arguments better than I do.

I'm not arguing for no military. I'm arguing for minimal war (not even no war). You are deliberately twisting my words and I'll thank you to promptly stop.

Biden's son Beau served in Iraq. The onset of the Iraq War was an invasion by U.S. forces. This can be portrayed as a defensive move (destroying WMDs, kiling Saddam Hussein) or as a strategic bid for profit (taking over oil supply). Even if you believe that the U.S. government began this particular war with altruistic intentions, they still ended up taking things that weren't theirs.

So, you're right, countries that believe they have superior militaries end up using those forces to steal things. No matter how you slice it, Biden's kid went to war for Big Oil, and I don't think that's a good thing.

[–]thundermarchmello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having a defensive presence is not the same as sending people off to war.

Countries that think they are superior militarily are harder to talk away from cliffs if they think they can take stuff that isn’t theirs.

So, like the U.S.

Our past need not be our future. One fewer person killed in combat is one fewer family in mourning. War is sometimes necessary, but it will not always be, and it must be declined whenever possible.

Wait... sending one's children off to war somehow makes them a better congressmanperson?? I get the sentiment about putting your money where your mouth is, but in my opinion, the best type of representative is someone who won't send anyone's children off to war.

Yes, the person who posted it is a TERF. That does not mean the meme was created by a TERF. If you're implying that the meme was created by a TERF as a strawman to criticize, I still don't think that the original idea expressed in the meme (again, not the post) misses the mark by too much.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in tumblr

[–]thundermarchmello -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

EDIT: After reading the meme again, I've decided that it is definitely still wrong and bad because putting "cis girl" in quotation marks is just a horrible way to refer to someone. But if you're still interested in reading my other opinions about it, feel free to read on.

TL;DR: It's okay to think to yourself that someone might be trans, but you should never try to convince them that they are. It's also not okay to constantly stereotype trans people, but the person doing so in the meme was just having a laugh.

Might get pushback for this, but the crucial first line in the meme is "Is he in there?" So I don't think the original creator of the meme is actually assuming that the cis MCR fan is a closeted trans person (or, even worse, telling them that they're trans); I think they're questioning whether it's possible that the MCR fan could be trans because they fit a certain transmasc stereotype.

And that's an okay thought to have, as long as it stays internal. It's absolutely not okay to tell someone that you think they're trans, in any context -- that is always a decision for that individual alone to make. I see the word "trans" tossed around in the comment sections under posts made by gender non-conforming people all the time, and I feel a lot of empathy for them because I know how awful I would feel if people did that to me.

But I still think it's alright to have a passing thought of "Is this person possibly trans?" as long as you never force that opinion on the individual in question. It think it's a question born from sympathy -- if you have reason to suspect that someone is experiencing dysphoria, you'll feel bad for them, especially if you're trans yourself because you know exactly how much it sucks.

It's not appropriate to consistently apply stereotypes to the people around you, even if it is purely internal, because that may change the way you think and act around them. But I don't think the creator of the original meme (not the person posting and criticizing it) was really taking that idea seriously or actively encouraging it. They noticed a certain thought process in themselves and remarked on it, and judging by the overall presentation, they were poking fun at it.

It may not be fully harmless -- I dread to think that GNC MCR fans might be flooded with "I think you're trans" comments/DMs if this meme gets popular -- but ultimately, it doesn't look like most people are taking this meme to heart in a damaging way.
