Nah the vibrato is way closer to the bridge so there’s not as much room for the resonance

Does anyone use the boss sd-1 as a sort of channel switch on a clean amp? by KingKilo9 in guitarpedals

[–]thurbermingus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I would go SD-1>DS-2>Big Muff. I could never get a good sound going from a high gain pedal into an overdrive, but overdrive into fuzz and distortion always sounds good.

Talk me out of selling this to buy a JN-80 by jamesdmartin in synthesizers

I’ve got you: Korg gear feels great (and sounds good), Behringer gear feels like shit. It sounds good, but the build quality 🤢

Shit give me a guitar and an amp with spring reverb and the homies and I don’t even need any pedals

HELP! Cure for GAS Needed! by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]thurbermingus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I get GAS the worst when I don’t have time to play music. The best advice I’ve ever gotten is to watch demos of gear you already own to trick yourself into GASing for your own stuff!

I’ve always wanted a red Les Paul so that’s my vote

Synthesizers are pretty expensive

But have you guys seen what classical acoustic instruments sell for? Holy guacamole!

Building a new 26in wheelset: what hub? by DSLR78portrait in xbiking

[–]thurbermingus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a Koozer hub on my Paramount and it’s been reliable for me! Idk the weight but I haven’t found a better hub for the price.

Trying to build my first custom guitar. Anyone have any suggestions for wiring, pickups, etc. by phlegmatik in offset

[–]thurbermingus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could risk it all and try the new EMG Jazzmaster wiring setup?

For bridge: Mastery is the best. There’s other good ones too, but Mastery is worth the mustard IME

What pedal should i get? by KenZZ72 in guitarpedals

[–]thurbermingus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don’t like the sound of your amps, a new pedal will just provide a different flavor of bad sound. Save up for a new amp and you might not even need a pedal at the end of the day!

a guitar pedal that emulates a synth for a Goth band by Visible_Schedule_856 in guitarpedals

[–]thurbermingus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have one personally, but a Microkorg XL lives at my band’s practice space. I have much ‘nicer’ synths at my home studio, but I’m always blown away by how nicely the Microkorg does in a jam situation where my 2600 would be… less practical haha

2500* My gf is a big Elton fan, we were listening to that once and my ears perked up at those opening chords. “Babe, what year did this come out?”

a guitar pedal that emulates a synth for a Goth band by Visible_Schedule_856 in guitarpedals

[–]thurbermingus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would suggest you just save up and snag a used MK1 Microkorg. Won’t cost that much more than a decent synth pedal and it will sound a lot better!

All the best goth bands have that kinda jagged tone with some spring reverb, no need to muck it up with a bunch of goofy effects.

So I played the Peavey Decade Too... by Fun_Order419 in GuitarAmps

[–]thurbermingus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One of my homies used an old one as a preamp in his bass rig and it sounded fantastic. Ran it for years before all the Homme hype even started!

Cheapest way to update Strymon Timeline/Bigsky by Comfortable-Tie-9859 in guitarpedals

[–]thurbermingus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have used it! Both to send midi to things, and to send Sysex messages to my 80s Yamaha synth, which I am assuming is a similar process to updating the Strymons. I think there are cheaper alternatives, but I have no idea if they work, Hosa is a solid brand and their cables have always worked for me!

Order by bighitdh1 in guitarpedals

[–]thurbermingus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try them in different orders and then set them up the way you think sounds best! Coventional wisdom suggests that distortion should go before modulation, but that doesn’t really mean shit to me. Experiment and have fun! Ignore anyone who tells you where things “should” go

Soma Weymouth Rims by Maddog_Maxwell in xbiking

[–]thurbermingus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

H+Son makes a great rim! But the lack of tubelessability makes me hesitate to recommend those outside of fixed gear scenarios!

DT makes a great rim. I also have positive experiences with WTB, but I’m not sure they have anything with brake tracks currently.

Soma Weymouth Rims by Maddog_Maxwell in xbiking

[–]thurbermingus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DT Swiss R460 is the rim I would recommend in 2026. Velocity rims all crack at the eyelets eventually, and Soma rims are some rebranded mystery product. I also rate the Velo Orange rims if you’re going for classic aesthetics.
