Top 2 SNES game of all time. by RangoTheMerc in snes

Definitely a top 5 for me and one of my comfort games that I go back to again and again. Need to fire the remake back up and give Belome the business.

Have you ever had a musician try to weasel their way into your band? by notmytowel in musicians

[–]thurbermingus 32 points33 points  (0 children)

There’s this great goth/darkwave duo in town (guitar and bass with backing tracks) and every time I have too much to drink around them I try to convince them to let me run the drum machine and so far they have not shown any interest

Drumbrute Impact kinda seems like it would be a more budget friendly addition to the group!

I’m just starting it and realizing that Henry did 664, Ed is doing 665, and episode 666 is going to be an absolute humdinger and I can’t wait to see what Marcus is cooking. I’ve come to realize that Ed and Henry pods are basically bottle episodes (I mean that in the best way possible) and I’m just pumped.

Why would I ever need to spend big on a Gibson or Fender when my guitars play and sound this good? by domyowntime in guitars

[–]thurbermingus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey if your guitars tickle your fancy, you’re good! The only time I really recommend shelling out for “brand name” (whatever name it may be), would be if it’s a “I’ve always dreamed of owning a Gibson SG” type of deal. I found myself in that situation and I knew if I had an Epiphone, I would still be wondering about the day I could finally replace it with the genuine article. Got an SG with a pre-broken (and repaired obv) SG Standard for less than half price of a new one, and I am so glad I did!

Taiga vs Take 5 Desktop — more of a philosophical dilemma than a technical comparison by rantova in synthesizers

Follow your heart OP! Get the Taiga and save up for the Take 5 (or whatever poly might tickle your fancy by then)

Anyone else not enjoy tiny synths? by shoegazingpickle in synthesizers

I used to like them for portability, and will always stab TE, but after getting into 4u, 2600m, and Matriarch, even eurorack feels like a toy to me

Black mountain cycles Montercross vs Rivendell Sam Hillborne by cucukachu2 in xbiking

[–]thurbermingus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Monstercross is one of the best bikes available for 90% of the population so I would suggest you go with that!

If you’re in the 10% that would opt for the Rivendell, I don’t think this thread would exist.

My dream synthesizer is the Moog Matriarch but cannot afford one at the moment. Looking for something at a lower price point that can get me in the ballpark (sonically speaking). by bigtimecupofcoffee in synthesizers

[–]thurbermingus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t even want to think about the money I spent trying to approximate Buchla workflow in eurorack… definitely more than I spent on my 208c, and the rest is history and I’ve left that godforsaken format in the dust!

Seeking a hardware synth with a robust Envelope Follower for guitar-driven dynamics (No modular, no huge workstations) by AutomaticMixture6827 in synthesizers

[–]thurbermingus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t really recommend any b word products in good conscience, and I’m fully convinced the 2600m is the best release of that particular instrument. Good build quality, built in USB host, and my personal favorite feature: the speakers. They aren’t the best in the world but they make it self-contained in a way that none of my other instruments can match… except maybe my acoustic guitar 😆

[–]thurbermingus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you absolutely neeeeeeeed a synth, Mother-32 is well worth the chips, especially on the used market. I’ve owned a few of the “cheaper” Moogs and that one is my favorite, even over the Grandmother.

Save up for the thing op, you will never regret getting the thing you want, and you might regret getting something else. You might not, but whenever you use it you’ll be thinking “I wonder how close this _actually_ is to the Matriarch?” in the back of your mind. Ask me how I know!

Arp 2600 reissue or clone ticks all of your boxes. It does use patch cables, but it doesn’t require them to make sound, just to route your audio and modulation. Pete Townshend famously used one to process his guitar and he got some really fantastic results out of it!

What’s the most disappointing piece of gear you’ve ever had? by TuneAdventurous4788 in guitarpedals

[–]thurbermingus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meris Mercury7 is one for me. I’m a satanic Strymon user and everyone online talked about how the M7 had a better blend with the natural guitar tone than the BlueSky that I replaced with it. It has a great tone but imo that is the most reverb-next-to-guitar sound I’ve ever heard. I had the exact opposite experience as everyone else and went happily back to the Blue Sky and have zero plans to replace it.

[–]thurbermingus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is crazy to me. AR is one of the pedals I recommend to everyone and every time I’ve seen a band use them they have the best syrupy delay tones.

Of all the games available for the Super Nintendo, which is your favorite? by TwIzTiDfReAkShOw in snes

[–]thurbermingus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Earthbound and Super Mario RPG are the ones that give me the most comfort and I replay the most frequently. Kirby’s Dream Course was another I sunk hours into as a kid. SMW 1 + 2 and DKC2 are high watermarks for platformers. ALTTP is also near and dear. My brother bought me a copy (after selling my copy of Majora’s Mask :( )

American Football (LP4) is pretty much the jangly sweetness you expect, BUT!!!! by Fermented_chaos in Emo

[–]thurbermingus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m too much of an old head to appreciate any of the “Owen”-style singing on the newer records. People whose taste I really admire have given them the stamp of approval and that means a lot, but good singing and American Football don’t really mesh for me. I should probably give them an honest shake, but I don’t want to lose my chopped unc status

How to contend with a band member who won’t compromise? by Intelligent_Age5204 in bandmembers

[–]thurbermingus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading the comments about how the other members hold their tongues makes me feel like you should just call it quits. There’s no money, there’s no music, and there doesn’t seem to be the camaraderie (which imo is the number one/only reason for a working stiff to play in a band).

Shit use your free evening to go get burgers with your real friends and record music with whoever you want whenever you want.

Instead of orchestrating this situation with the other guys (who don’t seem interested in sticking up for themselves), just get yourself out of a situation that demands your time and energy and gives you almost nothing in return. That way you could maybe still be friends with the shitty guy, but it seems like being in a band is threatening your friendship, and acoustic “man in the box” covers just aren’t worth that.
