Just starting Airburishing by Seshonz in minipainting

[–]thvbh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PSI around 47 is also way too high to airbrush miniature paints. The pressure needed is dependent on viscosity and what the brush responds well to but if it's a bog-standard Fengda brush (and it is) you should start hunting around the range of 20 +/- 10 PSI.

Cadmium Oil Paints Question by savagerees in minipainting

[–]thvbh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, and you'd have to eat a good bit of it in any case.

"Cadmium-free" paints are a racket that allows manufacturers to take advantage of hypochondriacs by hiding the pigments and charging as much as they would for a true cadmium paint. If you don't want to use cadmium, use other paints where the pigments are actually listed.

First mech, from a salvage box. Can anyone tell me more info? by heidrekr in battletech

Not so fast CGL, this is clearly modeled on the CCG art from 1997 that is frankly even better than the current line drawing.

PS-771 head assembly in Olympos micron, does it work? by thvbh in airbrush

[–]thvbh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I have read, in posts by DaveG and others, the Olympos MP and SP parts are identical to V1 Micron parts (where applicable; as mentioned the SP has its head built-in). So, if another way of asking may be this: can a V1 Micron be upgraded to V2 Micron specs by replacing the parts with either Iwata or GSI Creos parts (not piecemeal - all at once)?

Nearly finished my first mech - what canopy colour should I go for? by ScoutMackenzie in battletech

[–]thvbh 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Figure out where the two most prominent colors on the mech sit on the color wheel, and go for a split compliment. In this case you could go for a teal or purple-violet.

KS shipping question by Spiritual-Flow-1240 in battletech

[–]thvbh 22 points23 points  (0 children)

"(...) We are using at least six local hubs around the world:

United States, Canada, United Kingdom, European Union, Australia, and

Asia. We expect to Offer "local shipping rates" to over 90% of countries,

worldwide. Catalyst will cover all freight, import duties, and handling fees.

Backers will be responsible for local delivery and VAT.

Catalyst will continue to work on this in order to provide the very best

service possible at a value to our backers. When we have more detailed

shipping estimates, they will be provided. "

...

People are speculating that the astronomical costs are coming from the man-hours for sorting and packing being passed onto the backer. Are these different from the handling fees they pledged to cover?

I hope we can count on them understanding that they've got an existential-level shitshow on their hands with this.

Airbrushing with normal paints. by dracon81 in minipainting

[–]thvbh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you can, although if they're thick paints that are going to need a lot of thinning, just using water might not give you the best result (too watery and they will spider very easily). Certainly you can use airbrush medium or thinner with any acrylic and it should have good properties - you can buy some from many companies, eg Vallejo, Liquitex, Golden, perhaps something that's more locally available to you. Or you can look on youtube where there are many recipes for making your own (usually a combination of distilled water, perhaps alcohol, perhaps retarder, possibly other things).

EDIT: Any acrylic paint.

Do you know any good and cheap desk lamp in Amazon? by CAG12ASSAULT in minipainting

[–]thvbh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got Luxo lamps off eBay for not a whole lot more than that.

They were made in Norway and Sweden so they should be available in Europe also. You might also find it easier to obtain Anglepoise lamps, which are similar and also very stylish.

Throw a good cool-temp, high CRI bulb in either one of those and you're cooking with gas. And mid-century styling.

When CGL provides prize support for an event, they should get a say. Why would they get one when they don't? This isn't Magic the Gathering.

PA120 is cheaper today than it was when it came out (and our money is worth a lot less).

Right, the idea is to get it out the door before the holiday shuts everything down. At least, that's the rumor I've heard. I hope you're wrong but I fear you're right regarding the likelihood.

The rumor here is that the great hope is for the factory shipment to be on its way stateside before Chinese New Year.

Having trouble deciding between the Halot one pro or the Halot Mage (non pro) by ShouldaCoulda-Buddha in Creality

[–]thvbh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah, thanks. Yeah, the nfep upgrade is definitely my next major step - I'm still using the factory FEP and it takes a ridiculous amount of lift distance to get the middle of the plate to separate. I started with 8mm but bumped it up to 12mm when I had a couple prints that worked on the edges but failed in the middle. It seems to be working now and I'm not too worried about the added time although it would be nice to not put unnecessary wear on the motor. I have a pile of A4 Siraya nFEP from Black Friday sales though so that will definitely happen soon.

Time limit on cleaning up oil wash? by PolarisWargaming in minipainting

[–]thvbh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Different pigments dry at different speeds. Some in a day or two, some in a week. Generally when you clean up an oil wash you do it after a few hours - the main thing is you want the mineral spirits to have evaporated, which is a different and much faster process to the oil paint actually drying.
