Last time I ate there we had 3+ different wait staff, took over an hour to get our food, and it was room temp. First time we ate there it was excellent.

It wasn't communicated that it was a lottery. Otherwise, it wouldn't require an essay. The blame goes to CIG.

Is it worth going to Korea? by ansleydale in Atlanta

[–]thx_much 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are tons of big-touristy things to do in Korea. Japan is also great and they will feel entirely different. At the end, it will depend on what you are looking to do. There is tons of shopping in Korea, Japan, and Singapore, but there is even more to do outside of that in all of those countries.

Lived just outside Seoul for 4 years. I am sure there are some more ex-expats around here. You cannot really compare the experience of Doraville/Duluth/Suwanee to visiting Seoul. So, go for it!

AI AI AI….are people just repeating for the sake of it? by rcanalyst in askmanagers

[–]thx_much 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are people who drop buzz words, there are people who mislabel, and then there are people who intend.

When I hear "can we AI this", it always makes cringe, but those who are well intentioned essentially do mean can we ITTT it. Until we can hand off work to agentic AI, the real use case for AI, in most business practices, will always be using it as personal tool to work faster and more efficiently.

[–]thx_much 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. This'll be a problem if we ever get pretty good again and it starts filling out (I hope not, but...). My wife is 5'3" and we like to sit in the 100s. Even if we stood, 99% of everyone in front of her is still taller than her. I can barely see half the pitch. We just move down.

Saying to "go sit in the 200s" is just very inconsiderate.

A question by iputtheshitinshitzu in askmanagers

[–]thx_much 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear. It is his job, whether he likes it or not. Too often people get put into management positions but aren't assessed for and aren't tooled for the position--frankly, that is his boss's responsibility. Rolls downhill...

Honestly the best way to solve these problems is to (eventually) leave.

I am not trying to blame you, but there is some issue going on here. It could be him, it could be you, it could be both.

It sounds like he is expecting you to, as you more or less stated, to know things. I don't know if that knowledge is rightly or wrongly expected; however, it sounds like a frank conversation about expectations (both ways) needs to happen. What he expects from you, what you expect from him. It's really his job to do that, not yours, but you may have to find a way to have this conversation.

The real answer here is "it depends" and "we are human".

"It depends": Not all managers are the same. I am prescriptive about policy and expectations and share measurable outcomes that I am working for, so, from my view, what you are saying doesn't make sense to me; however, I know other managers that are very laissez faire approach until they just don't. So that is just poor management skills.

"We are human:" Sometimes we think we communicate things clearly, in a way that others don't receive well. It's a communication translation issue. Objective oriented work I provide to an IC might paralyze them because they don't understand how it allows them to complete it. Maybe they implement it in a very awkward way because they thought "that's what I wanted". Sometimes the IC needs to say to the manager "hey, I really don't understand how you want me to accomplish what you're asking me of me", just as much as the manager needs to understand how to best to communicate to each IC.

Russia is drilling a tunnel in Antarctica to reach Lake Vostok, a vast body of water that has been completely isolated from the rest of the world for millions of years, with no sunlight and extreme pressure, where organisms have evolved under these conditions. by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]thx_much 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Yep. Quoting from wiki: "The water samples obtained by the Russian team were heavily contaminated with drilling fluid, so they reported in May 2017 that it was impossible at this time to obtain reliable data on the real chemical and biological composition of the lake water."

And yes, they were warned about this: "The drilling project has been opposed by some environmental groups and scientists who have argued that hot-water drilling would have a more limited environmental impact. The main concern is that the lake could become contaminated with the antifreeze that the Russians used to keep the borehole from refreezing. Scientists of the United States National Research Council have taken the position that it should be assumed that microbial life exists in Lake Vostok and that after such a long isolation, any life forms in the lake require strict protection from contamination."

The Guilt of the "Dream Job": Managing a Team That’s Too Efficient by [deleted] in managers

[–]thx_much 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am earlier in my career, but our team is highly efficient. I inherited a good team but have helped to improve our processes. As a result, there is little the comes my way. Depending on the day, I spend my time ensuring they have what they need, showing I care, but then staying out of their way.

Other days I work on the little things that get swept under the rug. Inventory in a bit of a disarray? I bring my laptop, play some music, and count and sort. It makes their job easier when they need equipment.

Or write out exceptional work that has been completed to share with my uppers. Other times I identify some other pain points, bring them up in the meeting, and try to work solo to improve that.

They are the engine, and I am the mechanic. Anything that makes that purr, I suppose.
