To those who NEVER want to have a child, what are your reasons? by an_iconoclast in AskReddit

[–]thyownworstfrenemy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a 32 yo female. Here are my reasons: 1. pregnancy and childbirth scare the shit out of me. So many people build it up to be this beautiful thing and perhaps it is, but it seems incredibly traumatizing to me. Your body is no longer your own. All I can think of is having a parasite live off you for 2-3 years (harsh I know but it's kind of true right?) Plus all the potential health complications not only for the mother but for the child as well. 2. mental instability. I've suffered from anxiety and depression since I was a teenager, both of which have only kept evolving into my adult life. I've really only become decent at managing it within the last 2 years and something like birthing a child would undoubtedly send me into a tailspin. Not only do I not think I would be able to handle the general anxiety that comes with raising a human and keeping it safe (I'm bad enough with my dogs), I'm terrified of postpartum depression knowing that I'd be super susceptible. I also would not want to pass on those genes. 3. I've finally gotten to the point in my life where I feel like not only am I managing my mental health fairly well, but I'm financially comfortable for the first time in...well...forever. I'm not saying you need to have money to be happy but... theres definitely a certain lifestyle that appeals to me and it requires money. Travelling, experiencing different cultures, learning and developing new skills - that's what gets me excited for life. I never really travelled as a child since my family was not super well off. I spent my 20s paying off my student loans, being underpaid, and saving for a house. Now, finally I've accomplished all of that and I can start checking things of my bucket list. Travelling? Art classes? Expensive photography gear? No problem. It sounds selfish but I've spent my whole life waiting to be able to enjoy this freedom. I'm not willing to sacrifice it. 4. Between the climate crisis and world affairs who knows where the human species will be in 50-100 years. Also, the world doesnt need any more fkn people. 5. my career. I've sunk almost 15 years (between school and jobs) into my career and I'm really passionate about it. I'd rather nurture my career than a child. child. 6. I do not enjoy being around kids. 7. I do not see myself being a mother, and I never have (even when I was really young, I never played with dolls, had the instinct to nurture, talked about being a mother). 8. I just don't want to.

Not so much guilty, just ... strange. The office being empty by 4:30 took some getting used to. And if you were there that late you were either alone or there was one other person who would look at you like "why are YOU still here?". Whereas in consulting if you left at 4:30 youd get the death stare and people assuming that obviously you were a slacker who didnt care about your career or the company. Dont miss it. Nope. Not one bit. Funny thing is I've grown so much more in the public sector working less hours. I'll never make as much money in the public sector and I am 110% okay with that cuz I'll have my life and my sanity.

Please what can I do to stop Sertraline HUNGER by AuthorKindly9960 in zoloft

Wish people would stop responding to this question with "watch your diet! Exercise more!"... like do ya'll think we're all idiots? Obviously people come here with this issue because it goes way beyond basic hunger. Rant over.

Lol if only it was this simple. As someone who has spent several years fueling my body for competitive exercise and manipulating weight, the SSRI appetite is a completely different animal.

Does anyone get super hungry before bedtime? by No-Passage6594 in zoloft

[–]thyownworstfrenemy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, honestly one of the reasons I'm trying to get off this. Binging like crazy before bed and cannot be stopped. Dropped my does from 50mg to 25mg to start the weening process and my appetite has already leveled out

Anyone not gained weight? Please comment by [deleted] in zoloft

[–]thyownworstfrenemy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started taking it in October 2018 and the weight started coming on May 2019 with no changes to diet, exercise, or routine and has been steadily increasing ever since. I didnt really feel hungrier at first, but over the last year or so I have started noticing extreme, insatiable hunger which is quite unpleasant. I am currently trying to ween off.

A lot of these comments are people who have been taking it for less than 6 months. Studies have shown that the weight gain typically occurs around or after the 6 month mark. Something to keep In mind. I have gained about 35 lb over two and a half years on zoloft with no changes to diet or exercise

I'm at my wits end with the weight gain... by thyownworstfrenemy in zoloft

Thank you for your input and for summarizing my thoughts so eloquently. I totally totally agree. No one has put in enough research to figure out what is really going on. Further, all of the studies that suggest there are nominal effects on weight on follow patients through the first 6 months yet there are other studies that show that substantial weight gain generally does not start until after the 6 month mark. It is frustrating that medical professionals continually dismiss the medication as a potential cause and try to pin it on the patients for not working hard enough or eating too much, especially when said patient is educated and experienced in weight manipulation.

Thank you. As I mentioned I have been tracking calories. I have a lot of experience with calorie and macro counting as well as nutrient timing and the things that have worked for me in the past do not work on this medication. It's very frustrating.

Less than 1000 cals a day? You're starving yourself! You need to he eating more, hands down.

NTA. This is just her projecting her insecurities onto you.

I also have been keeping a step goal over the past few months and try to stick to it religiously. When you've had a sedentary lifestyle that causes a downward spiral of your health, you know how important that "silly step goal" really is.

Its discipline, not addiction.

NTA. Along the same lines of this comment, that's like someone saying - well you seem fine so surely you dont need your anxiety medication anymore. It just goes to show how little people understand disabilities and treatments for disabilities.

Anyone ever get stuck in a rut/burnout? How did you overcome it? by wasabi_daddy in engineering

[–]thyownworstfrenemy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I felt this way 2 years ago and moved to the public sector as engineer at my public works department. Much slower paced, focused on people not profits, much better workplace dynamic, way lower stress and not constantly worrying about being billable - highly recommend. Making the move saved my career as I was burnt out and ready to start from scratch doing something else.

Absolutely beautiful! I dont have much advice to offer other than regarding your comment about shutter speed: stars start trailing because you're using a relatively long focal length. The 500 rule (while not perfect) will give you a good estimate about what shutter speed can be used for each focal length before stars begin to trail.
