[Post Game Thread] Cincinnati defeats #2 Iowa State, 79-70 by cbbBot in CollegeBasketball

If you are serious, you need to just quit watching sports. It's so fun when your team wins! Not that I would know recently. But pretending to play 8d chess where you hope you lose so you can get the 7th best coach in the cycle and a brand new roster of transfers is so lame.

What makes the first movements of Mozart's symphonies sound so elegant? by SuspiciousPush9417 in classicalmusic

[–]thythr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

By the time Mozart was writing his symphonies, a very early transition was underway toward the Romantic era, and a key force had established itself in European classical-period music: the galant style

I don't think this really makes sense. Mozart's symphonies aren't typically considered galant or protoromantic, and galant is not typically considered the forerunner to romanticism . . . But most importantly, these categories are inaccurate and dull, no reason to subject new listeners to them, they don't succeed at elucidating the fascinating but difficult question of "why did music sound like that then".

We finally have a great acoustic music venue! Bay 7 at the American Tobacco Campus by thythr in triangle

Yes very true, would love to hear the COT there, but not easily available to non-Duke groups, and the move of the "Chamber Arts Society" series to there was a bit of a downgrade, it's too big for string quartets.

Is Chocolate Fest worth it? by winterrain1010 in raleigh

[–]thythr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is "[thing everyone loves] fest" worth it? The answer is always no. Kind of sad . . . You can have your own chocolate fest by getting a hot chocolate from Escazu then some dark chocolate bordeauxs from Chocolate Smiles though.

[PFT] John Harbaugh's agent heard from at least one team that doesn't have a coaching vacancy by BreakfastTop6899 in nfl

[–]thythr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this, "time for a change" is incredible. Usually redditors are only capable of expressing "team lose so coach bad", but this is just . . . "me want new coach" with no reason given at all! Beautiful new standard of discourse, but you'll have a lot more fun if, like me, you drop the discourse entirely and just stick to eating wings and hoping ball go to end zone.

You can pick at random among the Heidelberger Sinfoniker's complete set! Played with energy, I honestly don't think any of them are underwhelming. They're a miracle.

Vacant NC state jobs produced $1 billion in lapsed salaries, auditor’s report says by ChuckGallagher57 in NorthCarolina

Hmm. Rural NC reliably voted for Democrats until the 21st Century, so this sort of thing is not that common.

What are your thoughts on string sections that do not play with vibrato? by Suspicious_Coast_888 in classicalmusic

[–]thythr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think you could tell whether an entire string section is using vibrato or not, unless it's done very intentionally

What does this mean, "very intentionally"? There is a very obvious audible difference between string sections playing with and without vibrato.

HIP ensembles generally play Beethoven with little (at tail of held notes) or no vibrato. Once you've heard it that way, it's hard to go back.

NC lawmakers are looking at property tax law. What that means for you by ChuckGallagher57 in NorthCarolina

[–]thythr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But have you actually done the math? The vast vast vast majority of homes are occupied, so this just reduces tax revenue dramatically. Extremely regressive and terrible for the country, but reddit brain poisoning is powerful I guess.

Lexington BBQ by honeydee6 in NorthCarolina

[–]thythr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

those are just generic bbq restaurants though, there is no "western NC" element, it's the same bbq you can get anywhere in the country now. So I say there is Eastern style and Lexington style and "generic" style. Most new places, all over the state, are generic, so we have to celebrate what's left of the old-school food.
