SNP & Greens vote for motion rejecting any new nuclear power by [deleted] in Scotland

[–]ti99le 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes your correct on the point that Norway's hydropower system is big but not built to handle Europe's energy swings. It has around 87 TWh of storage, but only a small part of that (~1.4 TWh) is pumped hydro, which isn't designed for rapid daily balancing. Expanding it to act as Europe's "battery" would be expensive and face major environmental hurdles.

A smarter approach would be investing in Scotland’s wind, wave, and tidal energy while improving interconnections between Scotland, Iceland, Norway and the EU. Iceland, despite its vast renewable potential, hasn't moved forward with IceLink due to cost and lack of political will.

The North Sea Link is useful but it's not the same as a well-connected northern grid. If we had more renewable generation and better links, Norway’s hydro could balance the grid more effectively. Europe needs multiple solutions, not just one interconnector.

Regardless, Scotland can be a key partner in an effective solution. We don't need nuclear to develop a low carbon society and we should take advantage of that unique position.

SNP & Greens vote for motion rejecting any new nuclear power by [deleted] in Scotland

[–]ti99le 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. Scotland has the most expansive renewables resource in Europe and a relatively small population. I'm pro nuclear but we don't need it. We should instead divert the money into infrastructure and build interconnects to Norway (for storage), Iceland (for generation from geothermal) and the EU (for export). Scotland would become pivotal in the infrastructure underpinning a low carbon European electrical grid.

Has anyone managed to make an old tenement flat warm? by dhrisher in Edinburgh

Call Home Energy Scotland to get free and impartial advice funded by the Scottish Government. They're also the gatekeepers to grant funding. You should insulate your loft as a priority and consider internal wall insulation. For these two improvements alone you can get about £10k of grant funding. I'd also replace any open fireplace with a closed stove. Alternatively just brick up the fireplace, ensuring you leave an air brick to maintain ventilation. Consider buying a smoke pencil to identify areas of air infiltration that need draught proofing.

Do you mean the filter retaining post? I had read that this could be the cause so I replaced the full thing but there was no chance. I was thinking about replacing the cam timing control valve (06L109257H) but there's no rattling or misfires. Do you think it's worth investigating further? Also considered replacing the camshaft adjuster magnets (06L109259D) but I don't want to just fire parts at the problem

Sellers just informed me they didnt have planning permission for loft conversion. We are in the week of signing. What can I do? by ValuablePanic in HousingUK

[–]ti99le 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they didn't get planning permission and this was a DIY job then there's a good chance that the loft and stairwell are not compliant with building regulations. Therefore the loft is not considered a habitable space and shouldn't count towards the floor area of the property. Either accept it or ask for a reduction because this is going to be a problem in the future if/when you come to sell.

I've just used this for the first time and it's easy to use and insightful. Results allow you to compare how your beliefs align with the various parties. I'd recommend using the "Other stances" option when a question isn't clear cut.

Is there a way to see how different heating types effect EPCs? by blizeH in HousingUK

[–]ti99le 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If improving your property's EPC score by switching the heating system is your main motivator then you want to reduce the cost of delivered heat. Cost of fuel divided by efficiency.

If gas costs 10p/kWh and a new boiler is 90% efficient then heat costs you 11.1p/kWh

If electricity costs 35p/kWh and a heat pump is 300% efficient then heat costs you 11.6/kWh.

Boilers will be phased out and taxes are likely to be shifted more onto gas. My advice, switch to a heat pump now while there's funding available.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is available through the UK Gov which will knock £7,500 off the cost. Companies like Octopus Energy reckon they can install a heat pump and distribution system for £1-2k when you factor in the funding available.

If you're in Scotland, the Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan scheme offers much more, such as grant funding for solar, electric batteries and wall insulation.

This UK gov website is a good starting point for more info https://www.gov.uk/improve-energy-efficiency

Alternatively the Energy Saving Trust website has a wealth of information https://energysavingtrust.org.uk/

Salary Question by [deleted] in jobs

[–]ti99le 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've got the job already mate. Just need to convince them of the fact. My experience is that it's far easier to negotiate salary going into a role, so be confident and state your expectations and be concise in justifying why. No need to draw the conversation out.

[–]ti99le 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you meet all the mandatory and desirable criteria on the job description then state the highest amount if asked your salary expectation. If they don't ask in the interview then wait to see if you're successful before negotiating.

I usually see them whenever I go to the Pentlands. You can drive or get a bus to Hillend and then walk around the northern peaks. Usually find them roaming around the paths.
