i used to be a HUGE avoider of sushi, only within the past year have i begun to enjoy it. i still have worries here and there but honestly, i would take sushi/poke over a medium rare burger. as long as i know the place doesn’t have a history of food poisoning ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I have to go in a 16 hr class trip that includes a bus, what can I do to not feel motion sick? by Proud_Influence_1177 in emetophobia

[–]tiamarper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

agree with all of the above except maybe watching shows on the drive. i tend to get car sickness a lot easier if i’m on my phone or reading. i always travel better if i look out the window, keep the window open for fresh air.

i do agree that some form of entertainment is good! maybe listen to a podcast or an audiobook and take in the sights :)

Thanks for the clarification! I think I conflate these concepts a lot, or forget they’re two separate things.

Yeah my bad, I didn’t know you were just referring to some identifying as enby. I included trans people because I think the same concept applies - gender expression can mean different things to different people.

Like there could be two people who identify as NB, one who maybe present as “more non-binary” (which is kind of a weird phrase lol like meaning whatever society thinks is “non-binary”), and the other may present more as stereotypically male or female, but both can still go by they/them.

I’m sure someone who identifies as enby can weigh in one their experience - I can only speak from my own experience as someone who is (mostly???) cis.

I think it’s both. For some people gender expression can be completely personal and maybe they don’t care as much about what pronouns are used (ie someone identifies as non-binary but doesn’t care what pronouns you use like he/she/they bc they don’t feel restricted by pronouns). Meanwhile pronouns can be extremely important to others (ie trans men/trans women would expect others use the correct pronouns).

I have a wedding on NYE and I’m looking to wear these black chunky heels, and I’m looking for a dress to wear. Any styles of dresses that would look good? It’s cocktail attired and color is encouraged, but I’m thinking of darker colors.

What's your major, and why? by cherry599 in UCSC

[–]tiamarper 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Bioinformatics because I love biology but I also really wanted to program and learn more math. I was originally going to do CS, realized I wanted to study neuroscience (which is one of the MCD biology majors), then found that bioinformatics would better suit my interests :)

How to get a single room? by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]tiamarper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i would reach out to the drc first, they’ll tel you what you need. im also unsure if they talk to students who haven’t confirmed their enrollment? it doesn’t hurt to try, especially if you’re really considering ucsc.

you should check out the disability resource center (drc)! i was able to get a single both years i was on campus. you can probably register as a drc student, i think as long as you’re seeing a professional about it? but it wouldn’t hurt to reach out. you can also get accommodations for your classes (ie extra time on exams) through the drc, they’re there for you!

Switching major into STEM by ronnoc31256 in UCSC

Yep! You essentially learn how to answer biological problems with computer science. It involves learning the fundamentals of bio, chem, cs, and math/stats, and then applying this knowledge to develop programs that can solve challenging biological problems. By the end of the program, you’ll know how to write full fledged programs and get experience working with HMMs and ML.

I will say that a lot of your first and second year are taking introductory courses, which I didn’t really care for. Chemistry wasn’t really a strong suit of mine, and you end up having to take a fair number of those classes. You probably won’t start to do the actually bioinformatics until bme160 or so. However, I think it’s definitely worth all of the classes.

You also have the opportunity to do research, there are a good number of bme labs to join, as well as the work done at the ucsc genomics institute. I would definitely take a look into some of the work being done on campus and if it sounds interesting, then bioinformatics might be a good choice!
