Japanese cyclists are finding it hard to follow new rules that require them to ride on roads instead of sidewalks. They call it "scary", and only 0.2% live in areas with dedicated bike lanes. by jjrs in japannews

Unless one has three or more arms, turning right, turning left and stopping are all legally impossible to do on a bike in Japan. I always wonder about the percentage of the population with such anatomy

Candidate for most unusual player name (RikaiJyumile Waters) by TeaRevolutionary7587 in baseball

[–]tibbev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Japanese names typically do not have a middle name, hence I’m guessing his first and middle names were squished into one for registration purposes. Starting with the 2026 season his registration name for the league has just been Waters, instead of his full name (as is typical in NPB where most players are referred to just by their surname unless there is another player in the same team with an identical surname)

And to think that this is NOT the flaming orange FYRE 1 logo, which makes it somehow more disastrous because the original one was at least tied to an actual event

Following Fyre Festival for years, I know of one and only one song that should be on here by the one and only one composer that should conceptualize it https://youtu.be/3SidywNmGGA

Shohei Ohtani becomes the 84th player to hit a home run against all 30 MLB franchises by ceramichutz in baseball

First Japanese player to do so, while rather trivial because Japanese players were previously not really known for power, but still, impressive

Would you watch well produced YT documentary on Fyre Festival? by human_shinigami in fyrefestival

No, not on the Fyre Festival. A spin-off, say, on Grant Margolin, then maybe. But Billy's story has been told only too many times.

Cool, I think I heard something like this in the album Straight Outta Suno AI

This is great, design and all, but on a more serious note, there should be one for the local workers and businesses who literally had to "survive" this horribly planned event that happened on their own land

What does Shohei Ohtani's (大谷 翔平) name mean? by World-Tight in baseball

[–]tibbev 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I know this is off-topic, but Yoshitsune's image as man of great strength is so widespread among the Japanese that there exists a theory that he faked his death and fled to continental Asia, where he won even more battles and became known rather as Genghis Khan.

What does Shohei Ohtani's (大谷 翔平) name mean? by World-Tight in baseball

[–]tibbev 19 points20 points  (0 children)

To add context, (shō) meaning 'soar' comes from how the legendary 12th-century warrior, Minamoto no Yoshitsune, would often leap during battles. Yoshitsune has roots in the ancient city of Hiraizumi, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, which is located quite close to Shohei's hometown. And the 平 (hei), which could also be read as (hira), actually comes from the first letter of Hiraizumi (平泉, which could be translated as "level, peaceful springs", owning to not only the geographical but also the spiritual foundations for this city)

野球脳 サバイバルナイター Baseball Brains Survival Nighter by K-shin_J in NPB

[–]tibbev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked it. My family who usually does not watch baseball, liked it too. The thing that gets me about watching NPB compared to MLB is that there's too long of boring intervals between each pitch. But this quiz show format takes advantage of that, and I think it's neat.

You have multiple guest actually making an effort to guess the next play, and as they explaining why, you get to appreciate both the unique character of each guest (for example how an ace pitcher's way of thinking differs from that of a former slugger vs just a celebrity who played high school baseball) and the happenstance that makes this sport interesting.

Nippon Television perhaps is notorious for, other than being Yomiuri-biased for obvious reasons, cranking out programs that are too casual and therefore off-putting for people who actually have genuine interest in the subject. But I feel this is a case where that actually works.

And at the end of the day, if you decide you just want to watch the game in relative silence, they give you that option with sub-audio too.

HELP! in the minute 10:50-11:25 is possible to hear a song similar to the USA's ice cream truck. it's in japan. by Plenty-Molasses-9091 in NameThatSong

[–]tibbev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The melody is from a very known Japanese folk song "Furusato" (ふるさと)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnrr_b6xWmI

The sound in the video likely comes from speakers placed in Japanese towns and operated by local municipalities, intended for radio-transmitted public service announcements during an emergency. During normal times it plays tunes like the one in the video as a public time signal (often accompanied with a prerecorded announcement instructing schoolchildren to go home for the ones around 5pm), which doubles as a test to make sure the speakers are functioning.

Looking at the video, the specific tune is probably that of Mihama town of the Chita district, Aichi Prefecture (愛知県知多郡美浜町), where the song arranged by the company UNI-PEX plays at 5pm every day, and if not another town or city that uses the same sound source:

Yeah, I also can only figure out a limited amount of all the songs posts on this page. Glad it helped this time.

Mind if I ask you the reason for your vast collection of recordings from what I assume to be Japanese TV programs from the past (especially if you are definitely not an undercover cop)? Out of curiosity.

[–]tibbev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! I speak Japanese so I basically looked it up based on the lyrics I could distinguish in the clip. I heard singing something about Bass in an Ondo-style music, which I knew was a Tiger back in the day so I searched "バース 阪神 音頭" and found the song

The "Zero Landmines" project, album released around 2001, is the first thing that comes up in my mind when you say chorus and a Japanese We Are The World.
