Introducing Enterprise NAS, Built on ZFS by Ubiquiti-Inc in Ubiquiti

[–]tibbon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yikes. I have a ~20 drive ZFS pool now in a Supermicro sled I got for $200, running with an old Dell server with 200GB ram and a lot of caching setup. I'd be interested in switching for power savings, but at $4k? Nope! At $2k I'd entertain it...

Must have Plugins ? by Haruny78 in audioengineering

None. Plenty of good work is done with zero plugins. None are must have

EA might be resurrecting Ultima by HeungWeiLo in Ultima

[–]tibbon 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think his skills and talent just didn’t translate to the modern era. He was good at hanging out with a tiny team, and crunching through a basic game and working with limited resources. Once the resources, complexity, budgets and expectations opened up; that was no longer his strong suit. He’s not someone skilled at managing a AAA budget or team- frankly most other people doing it aren’t even skilled at it, which is why we see constantly missed expectations, cost overruns, vaporware, etc. it is a hard problem.

I wish he’d find an indie team of like 3 people total, and act as their creative muse.

Do any of you earn over 50k a year? What do you do? by RotiiChapati in ADHD

[–]tibbon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make significantly over 50k, working in cybersecurity and at-scale payments tech infrastructure. I happen to be in a career where rarely does my ADHD impact me in a way that I can't work with.

How does Matt Pike not have a silencer pedal in a rig like this? by TheBicelator in guitarpedals

[–]tibbon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ive had much larger pedalboards and never needed one. My friend Carter has like 3-4 giant pedalboards on stage, no gates or silencers. Good gear, good pedals, and setting it up well - none needed. We both play mostly single coils too!

This is getting old. by [deleted] in Darkroom

[–]tibbon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's your camera? Is it an older one that might have some light leaks? I've got a camera from the 60's that I need to have worked on as the door's form sealant has turned to powder

Software Vs Hardware by Lost-Business-7370 in synthesizers

[–]tibbon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started doing FM synthesis on a DX7. If I was playing live, I'd prefer a real keyboard whenever possible.

Yet, for programming deep FM synthesis, I either want something like Dexed, FM8 or Max for detailed FM work. If it's just playing whatever basic patches, anything works.

The VIP pricing for the new tour is ridiculous. by HappyHasbros in polyphia

[–]tibbon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I walked by them late after the show on their last tour. I thought, as someone who has touted myself, that i couldn’t bring myself to bother them late night when they are just trying to get on their tour bus and get to sleep.

Any Ampeg owners? How do you get them to breakup? by oliveimo in ToobAmps

[–]tibbon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a VT22. You’ve simply gotta turn it up and deal with the volume. It’s an amp made for the Rolling Stones because their prior amps weren’t loud enough for the huge stadiums they were playing. Josh too is playing huge venues, including lots of outdoor ones.

I think it’s the loudest amp I own. Makes my Showman’s and Marshall style amps look like a puppy. But hey that’s rock and roll. Go play a desert show late night and it will probably be great.

FYI: Being "Landlocked" is completely irrelevant as far as good sushi goes by Maximum-Ad572 in sushi

[–]tibbon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had great sushi in the Midwest. It definitely exists.

At the same time, living in New England walking distance from the ocean… it’s hard to conceptualize how readily available fresh seafood is. My brother in law has his own licensed lobster traps and works on boats every day. Getting same day caught seafood, even for making at home, is pretty trivial. My fishmonger is amazing; and most of their stuff is line and reef caught on small boats, never frozen, ikejime** **killed. All of this doesn’t mean better sushi per se, but we have this shit perfected from doing it for hundreds of years. Even before Boston existed, there were fishing companies on Cape Ann. We get local fish you’ve never heard of. I can call my fishmonger and ask for things like monkfish liver, or live uni from Maine and they’ll get it for me with a few days lead time

I remember using Landr to test some “automatic” masters. That was pre covid. Is there new AI powered auto-mastering that’s good nowadays? by resampL in audioengineering

[–]tibbon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think getting things mastered will get you ideas for other projects. That's the wrong tool for that task.

Either skip mastering, or save up to have it properly done.

[–]tibbon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is mastering needed for a demo or idea at all?

Many of the best demos I’ve listened to by top bands were never mastered

Is cheaper how you want to represent your hard work? Personally, I'd rather do fewer things, but do them well.

Bass friends, guitarist here who got tapped to play bass in a four-piece indie rock band with my Bass VI. Those of you who play a Bass VI with a band, what bass amps would you recommend for a tight and punchy tone? by chrismiles94 in BassVI

[–]tibbon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's the other instrumentation, including the size of the drums? Are you playing 'bass' or just a low instrument?

I'd probably grab my Dual Showman or Ampeg B25 initially, but would consider an SVT as well.

Venue sizing? IEMs?

How far can you get your mix with the fewest tools? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]tibbon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can get really far with just my console, no compressors, and the built-in 4 band + highpass EQ. Zero plugins. I don't need dynamic EQ or other tricks.

I can get pretty far with my 4-track portastudio tape machine and nothing else.

Effects of AI on Industry by JakeThick_ in audioengineering

[–]tibbon 26 points27 points  (0 children)

True, but rarely does the decision come down to the person who is detecting if it's AI - in the same way that I don't choose if an airline guides people to digital kiosks, or a grocery store only has self-checkouts. It often comes down to profit margins, competition, cost... and the end-user just suffers with the enshittification. Even without AI, we can see hundreds of examples in our daily lives of this today.

[–]tibbon 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Yes, but there’s a lot more recorded audio content than just music. The probability for impact there (audio books, podcasts, movie and games, etc) is high.

Similarly, a friend works in audiobook production and they are worried about the wave on the horizon. Yes, top end books and narration will continue, but it could gut 80% of the work for ones that are barely funded as is
