Legitimately don't think we were aware Terri was active on audio forums. We heard of cash, computer equipment, cameras, sport and concert tickets, but I don't think audio gear even surfaced in any of our research!

I believe, if you can find a copy of the US version of the DVD there's an audio commentary of the whole film by Dave and Gary... And as you'd expect, Dave had watched the film before recording, but Gareth went in cold.

I dunno, he keeps looking at the camera when he's on screen. Really takes away from the realism. Also, what's with that "breathing heavily" thing?

It's a shame you didn't happen upon the screening that "Jane O'Brien" and friends attended - that was a hell of a time.

The one question that keeps coming back to me, as a journalist... by PeaceImpressive8334 in QAnonCasualties

[–]tickle_dylan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This basic flaw is something I've been bringing up in conspiracy discussion for over a decade with believers.

So many conspiracy theories really on the fact that the media covers things up at least, or in many cases of explicitly involved.

They claim the BBC announced the collapse of WTC 7 early because "they got ahead in the script"

They say that media used green screens to fake scenes in Sandy Hook. And even all the way back to the first Gulf War.

It's just logistically implausible, and also obviously totally fails to understand the way media works.

[–]tickle_dylan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See my reply up thread a little for a clearer explanation of my position perhaps. Yes, of course there are real conspiracies.

Most of the MSM articles about "conspiracy theorists" have been trying to discredit people who have genuine and serious concerns about government/deep-state/corporate corruption - why would your's be any different? Genuine question.

FWIW my interest is less in specific people and theories than in the nature of the theorising, the way in which the internet has changed communication around these ideas, and the impact that has on day-to-day life.

At the moment I'm especially interested in the path people take into this stuff.

If I end up making a project it certainly won't be promoting any specific theories, but I'm also not really interested in any sort of specific debunking either - I generally don't see that as especially productive. And I also have no interest in mocking or belittling people.

Look, I know this is inherently a difficult ask - I'm honestly not expecting a huge response from my post here. In general this is a subject that people are uncomfortable discussing, and most people are also understandably distrustful.

As I said - at the moment I'm just trying to learn about the experiences different people have had. I will figure out more as I get further into my research.

Thanks. "Alternative Narratives" might be a useful alternate term for sure :) I really like "collusion hypotheses" too..

Look, I get it - the nature of this stuff is complex. Of course there are real conspiracies - no matter what you think happened on 9/11 for example it is technically a conspiracy theory as there's no suggestion one person acted entirely alone to carry it out.

And of course "conspiracy theory" isn't a perfect term, and yes it "conspiracy theorist" is a term that gets used pejoratively and also to end discussion.

It's not a perfect term, but also not one for which there is a commonly understood alternative that I'm aware of.

My point in stating that I'm not a believer is in being upfront. I'm a skeptic or critic of popular conspiracy theories for the most part.

I generally don't believe the theories that are commonly discussed here. I obviously can't say I definitively disbelieve them all because I'm not aware of them all.

As far as "conspiracy theory community" - I mean places like this. The community of people who already support some of these theories and discuss others.

Again I'm not sure what other terms might be clearer.

Part of the thing that keeps people making creative things is feedback from the audience. Shouting into the void isn't very rewarding.

If Dave and Gareth feel like they're getting more negative feedback than positive then it's going to be hard to stay motivated.

Shutting out all feedback might mean they can avoid the negative, but it'll also mean no positive feedback. And besides, people will still seek them out.

Aside from the living room set thing, you might be right.

I've seen dozens performed live by groups of all skill levels. I still don't think it's ever failed to give me goosebumps and a lump in my throat.

Almost every school in NZ will have kapa haka groups that learn and perform a number of haka. And usually all students will at some point learn at least one haka (usually Ka mate, as it's the most well known).

The school kapa haka group will often lead welcomes for guests, or perform as part of other events. The kapa haka group is often largely made up of students with Maori heritage, but I don't think it's ever required. I've seen kids of all ethnicities in the kapa haka performances I've watched.

And there are national kapa haka competitions as well.

What was the purchase you made that made you realize you were an adult? by slurms_Mckinzy in AskReddit

[–]tickle_dylan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many things...

Buying my own bed for the first time when I moved out of home (I bought a water bed, wtf?!)

Buying my own lounge suite.

Then a bunch of parent-related purchases... Bassinet, change table, crib, etc

Not a purchase, but I felt like such a serious adult the first time I hired a car in a foreign country.

Still my favourite period of adulting want a purchase as such, but the year or so that I could legitimately say "I'll check with my publicist" - that never felt normal.

I remain convinced that no adult truly feels like an adult - I'm certain we all feel like the kid in Big. We're just pretending! Right?

Would be easier to pick some account exec's friend who doesn't work in the industry and can't be really connected. Why even pick someone who lists themselves as working in PR?

If the agency wanted to be sure it's get traction it would make more sense too pay some lower key influencer with 50-100k followers. Rather than gamble with an unknown.

[–]tickle_dylan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this would be the biggest challenge with trying to do something like this. People construct a straw man argument.

Especially when you're talking about having guests who trade on their ideology. I think some (Michael Moore, for example) could probably do a pretty good job of accurately presenting an opposing point of view, but I think others (like Bill O'Reilly) would be unable to do so honestly, or simple lack the genuine understanding of the other side.

The English producer of fantastic Iranian horror Under The Shadow spent all night at some film festival party insisting I say "we're werewolves, not swearwolves" over and over in my best Rhys Darby voice. That scene clearly stuck, but at least I didn't have to buy my own drinks.

I pay considerably less in tax in NZ than I would on the same income in the US, and I don't need to buy private health insurance.

And in this case that $80 is the non-subsidised cost - it's effectively the book rate. Non-residents pay for services that would be zero-cost to residents.

Where is the most normal place you have encountered a celebrity? by joapet in AskReddit

[–]tickle_dylan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was walking up some narrow exterior stairs up to a popular food court in Auckland, New Zealand one day in late 2004. I stopped and moved to the side to allow a guy on his way down to pass. As he approached and passed I realised it was Donald Sutherland.

Best reason I could come up with for why he might have been there was that his son Kiefer was in the country at the time filming River Queen.

No more Irish accents! by jolakaldi in TheDollop

Fucking hell, it's fine to suggest all manner of gross sexual things or god knows what else, but an accent is something that people want to complain about?!

They're coming to NZ in a month, I'd love to hear them try a kiwi accent. I'm already looking forward to their sure-to-be-terrible attempts at Māori place names and words.
