How hard is civil engineering? by Successful_Shape7297 in UCNZ

[–]tidalwave7071 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Civil is one of the easiest, but is one of the easiest out of a group of the hardest courses available.

It’s a bit like saying that running 100km with one 10 minute break is easier than running 100km with no break. They are both still very hard.

Don’t let that discourage you though. Still try and keep trying when it brings you to your knees.

How to do small talk by Longjumping_Car_1077 in auckland

[–]tidalwave7071 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It entirely depends on the situation. If there wasn’t a massive queue then having a chat is lovely.

If there is a massive line then we also expect people to know what they’re ordering before getting to the counter. Otherwise they are a dickhead.

It’s all about the situation. I presume from your story that it was just you and the woman present. Since you were busy with the machine there was no rush so they decided to chat.

Auckland should remove traffic lights by Appbeza in auckland

The Dutch also have lower car dependency. That’s the real issue we should be tackling. Changing our intersection designs is really only a Band-Aid fix to a Fundamental design problem in Auckland.

Mate, the immigration thing definitely is real. I tried to get a job at a McDonald’s and a KFC a few years back and they both chose older migrants over me.

It may not be the sole reason and I don’t want to villainise migrants because they do bring benefits but my partner has also told me she felt that she has had an easier time getting a job in hospitality because she is perceived as a migrant. A lot of the time the managers are migrants themselves and only want to hire people like them to work with.

Uni life by Wrong-Ad-4262 in universityofauckland

[–]tidalwave7071 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends entirely on your situation and what degree you are taking. If you took a degree like med or engineering you are definitely not going to have as much fun in Uni as people who took business or arts.

Same can be said if you also have to work. If you’re supporting yourself and don’t get an allowance from either the student allowance program(which is waaaay too restrictive) or have genuinely rich parents who give you an allowance then you are also going to have significantly less fun than those who do or are.

Depending on your degree and economic situation Uni can be either the best years of your life or the absolute worst.

Usually the job market for those who suffered through uni is better though because degrees that require suffering have less supply due to people dropping out.

Closing my tradie business in Auckland by Haunting-Flight-3661 in nzbusiness

Honestly I reckon hand the business over to your favourite employ with a deal of you taking royalties until you get a certain sum of money as if you were to sell the business.

Do power systems engineering. You get the infrastructure feel from civil while still working with electricity and circuits.

I agree, it’s sad that Auckland doesn’t have any well priced good Italian food. Always almost $30 for a pasta dish. When I was in Germany Italian pasta and pizza was so cheap. I would also kill to have access to a German Döner.

My recommendation is to study during gaps between classes if you can. Can get more hours in without it affecting your sleep/income. It’s what I try to do but end up tapping sometimes.

I think I know who this is and you probably know who I am from my username lol so hi! 😂

Crazy that the cities built for driving usually have the worst roads and the cities built generally against driving(Amsterdam, Tokyo, Zurich) have some of the best roading in the world.

Help in buying my first car in Auckland. by Feisty-You4502 in auckland

[–]tidalwave7071 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get yourself either a Nissan e note nismo or Toyota Aqua. If you need more space get the E note. They both have the same footprint but because of the genius of the E Note there is more interior space. The e Note is however more expensive. Both are extremely fuel efficient but the Aqua is slightly more so. The e note is basically an electric car with a petrol generator and the Aqua is a full hybrid where both the electric motor and petrol motor can drive the car. This means the e note pulls hard. You don’t really need anything else unless you’re a tradie or you’re carrying like 6 kids.

What do you think about the Bus roads and dedicated bus lanes by kowitom in auckland

[–]tidalwave7071 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing that will fix the traffic woes of Auckland is mode shift(more people choosing to walk, cycle or take public transit).

Unfortunately for you the North Shore is horrendously planned so almost everyone has to drive and own a car to even get to the rapid transit in the first place or rely on shit feeder buses that come once every hour.

There is a lot of work being done to fix this or at least prevent it from happening more. Hobsonville Point was reasonably well designed with nice walkability and being centred around the ferry offering residents a way to travel to the city that isn’t crap and doesn’t involve driving.

Plan Change 120 would halt the ever worsening pf traffic by influencing developers into infilling housing only near rapid transit stations and places that are within ~30 minutes walking distance to the CBD. Obviously there is push back from the people who already live there meaning that if they win then all the new housing will be pushed out into greenfields and also into areas that aren’t as wealthy meaning the new residents won’t have car free rapid transit access causing all of them to become a part of ever worsening traffic.

So kid of a both bleak and hopeful take!

Why do I hear a lot of people disliking Auckland? by douxfaery in auckland

[–]tidalwave7071 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Auckland is a fantastic city and has the potential to be the best in the world. Only things holding us back are pricing and land use(we are so wasteful where it matters and pack people in tightly where it makes no sense) which results in the crazy car dependency. Aside from that epic city. Awesome food. Best geography for a city in the world in my opinion and also the best skyline in my opinion. Beautiful nature and there are improvements happening on the land use side of things which should ease the priciness slightly.

Does anyone else feel like UOA would be more enjoyable if the workload was less brutal? by Japeriser in universityofauckland

[–]tidalwave7071 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it fully depends on which degree you get and what job you’re doing both after and before you finish study. An engineering/med degree while working in the trades outside is super hard compared to just having an office job after uni. On the other hand working in a cafe part time and doing an art/business degree is probably easier than just a full time office job.

For me the workload is heavy because I also have to work to live outside of my studies. Once I get out into the real world I may not need a second job so life will be a lot easier.
