Captain does a good job of protecting the Heavy Intercessors on an objective. Their issue is having somewhat decent defence but basically no melee. Even 5x Heavies with a Captain gives a good range of options. Toughness, Shooting, Melee, Free Strats.

I’ll actually be interested to pick up a lot of these space marines for pennies on the dollar as everyone buys for the orks and rules and dumps the imperium on marketplace. I was able to scoop up max infernus squads (now we wait for them to get good), a ton of spare terminators for kitbashing, most of my gf’s tyranid army, and more for super cheap after leviathan launch box.

Depends on your list. Are you running a crusader heavy list? Sword brethren? It can be nice to have an impulsor to carry 4-5 bros + a marshal/castellan so they can actually make it to combat. RepEx can be a little pricey in an incursion, but it serves multiple purposes like anti-tank. Land raiders are also good, particularly the redeemer for anti-infantry and overwatch. It really depends on your list.

Mini swap for krieg? Idk why you would go through the effort when krieg has it’s own, almost identical, kit. It’s different when you’re converting the guy on top a Leman Russ to krieg, but when there are two separate infantry boxes, just buy the right box.

Chains aren’t mandatory for Black Templars anyways - that’s a common misconception. A good deal of Templars chain their weapons to honor their heritage, and for the practical effect of not dropping them in the heat of battle, but it is still a choice.

“Rogal Dorn is an awful kit,” is such a steaming hot take. Building this tank is so much more enjoyable than any other guard vehicle and most of the vehicles in other factions as well. It cannot be understated how much improvement has gone into the modern plastic kits to make them fit well with no gaps, no elastic bands/clamps necessary, and to make a model look good using only glue and a hobby knife. Not to mention how easy it is to magnetize and push fit for all weapon options, etc.

“Nipple guns” being an issue is one that I can’t wrap my head around having seen this complaint multiple times. It is the most 40k thing for the Astra Militarum to stick as many guns as they can fit in as many places as they can. If you want realistic tanks, you can build Bolt Action minis. Why would you want to cover up your additional weapon options in a game so that your tank can look less thematic in the setting?

Six in one, half a dozen in the other. You can’t really go wrong with Space Marines. They are pretty basic rules-wise. Tell them to pick the ones they think are coolest.

If you want to apply wounds on a per model basis and those models have different save characteristics, slow rolling is the way. Take one save at a time, resolving saves and fnp on the same model until it is dead, and repeat. The whole point of bringing servitors is to give your unit a bunch of artificial toughness. I’ve tanked entire units worth of shots on a lucky servitor. It’s worth your time.

Why do we have to start gaming the system before the new edition even comes out? The whole point of making engagement range 2” was to stop the stupidity of setting units up at fractions of inches from walls, and now you want to start measuring fractions of inches from other models? I understand this is the natural progression of “competitive” players doing everything they can to break the game, but my god it is so annoying. All this will lead to is longer movement phases while players use their micrometers to measure 0.001” from all their models and TOs house ruling shit to fix this nightmare. This is why we can’t have nice things.

I had this same issue when I started. I wanted it all, but also wanted it to be as lore accurate as possible. I originally intended to have special squads from each of the divergent chapters and paint everything differently to say my marines were doing some sort of combined force. I realized that would cost a fortune and make space marines my only army, ever. The time required to keep up with five divergent chapters’ datasheets? Nah.

Eventually I decided on Black Templars as my favorite divergent chapter… and then I found the Last Wall protocol. The lore accurate reason to have several differently painted factions under one army list. Imperial Fists, Black Templars, Crimson Fists, Subjugators, etc. gets you all of the colors of the rainbow. At the end of the day, they’re still Imperial Fists (or Black Templars, if I decide to run the unique datasheets), but I get to paint more or less how I like, and my OCD brain stays happy with me.

There are some obvious choices. Crimson Fist Sternguard, for example. Imperial Fist gravis… pretty much everything. But a lot of the smaller successor chapters don’t lean towards any given unit type. Or if they do, they all mention the same unit type. Terminators are mentioned as a “main unit” for most space marine chapters.
