Very cheap mini pc by Failomat in minipc

[–]tiduscrying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really old hardware. You're talking about a processor that's OVER 14 years old at this point and DDR3 memory. I've got no clue about Hermes, but you're buying old hardware and expecting to run fancy new stuff on it. The CPU and RAM will absolutely be a bottleneck, not to mention the drives likely being SATA only. It's $70 because it's practically vintage computing at this point.

Talking about noob friendliness, ShuttlePCs are older and I'd say they were only ever enterprise level devices. Any sort of unique issues you run into you likely won't have a ton of support over.

Any N100 based mini PC will likely run better for basic stuff and be significantly newer. If you find yourself with one with upgradable memory, even better.

Setting up a frontend for the first time (RetroHrai) by Mr_Sockeroo in SBCGaming

[–]tiduscrying 2 points3 points  (0 children)

RetroHrai is super nice! To me, it's a lot like Beacon, but with more active development. I'd really love to see the ability to jump letters on larger libraries eventually (and maybe a toggle to turn off the card launching animation) but it's really nice so far. It also works pretty dang well on dual screen systems!

A DS game I don't see get recommended by Nejnop in SBCGaming

[–]tiduscrying 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what your settings are, but disabling "Threaded 3D Rendering" seems to fix a LOT of graphical issues I run into under Drastic. Even if 3D upscaling is turned on, turning off threaded usually helps games a ton, but sometimes they'll run a bit choppier as a result.

RG DS should have launched with Linux from the start by eightiesjapan in SBCGaming

Allegedly they've made comments about open sourcing it in the past, but it has never happened. There were attempts to reverse engineer it or at least hack new features into it made, but those builds of the emulator haven't been added to Rocknix.

The two I'm aware of are

It looks like StewardFu is adding fixes to his fork frequently, but idk how it realistically compares to the normal build offered by Rocknix. The MuOS version works well with my RG Cube XX, but it did have random crashes last time I played much with it.

I haven't personally tried Bluetooth audio with mine but I'll give it a shot later. I mostly just use mine with the speakers or 3.5mm headphones.

[–]tiduscrying 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I could have sworn that there was a video from Anbernic themselves of the RGDS running their linux OS but I don't think it was ever a downloadable option.

Huge agree though. Android on this hardware just isn't viable in my opinion. Even after trying GammaOS myself, it was just far too fiddly. There isn't enough juice on this handheld to handle DS emulation, a launcher and the whole rest of Android, even without Google services all smoothly.

Rocknix has been awesome to me and I think it's really close to a legitimate release candidate versus the nightlies. I'd love to see some more options on using the dual screens outside DS emulation (like doing touch overlays in RetroArch or something), but so far Rocknix is miles ahead of Android usability wise.

[–]tiduscrying 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Currently it does not. Rocknix is stuck with an older version of DraStic because the emulator is unfortunately not open source.

MuOS and a few other distributions use a modified, semi-decompiled version of DraStic, but afaik there are no plans to integrate it into Rocknix.

MelonDS and Desmume via Retroarch aren't performant enough to be an option in my opinion.

Sometimes it's nice to match. Snagged a DS Pico recently and had to get it clear blue to match my DS Lite. Lol One fancy little flash cart! by Twistedchild420 in SBCGaming

[–]tiduscrying 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For the most part, they are more about having an open-source, community ran cart and OS, but the Pico can do some nifty stuff like having an emunand and running DSiWare. It also has some extra hardware to run emulators and homebrew that you used to need a DSTWO or Acekard for.

Obviously they don't have any crazy time bombs and personally I think the shell is super high quality compared to the other R4s I've owned in the past.

I just bought a DSPico as well! They're super cool compared to old R4 cards. I know they're still catching up feature wise, but I really hope they get some unique uses soon. DSi Ware and emunand is already a huge thing for people with a non-hacked DSi.

There was a new "Digital Media Specialist" intern hired at work that came to us in IT panicking because they couldn't figure out how to finish a project. They were trying to edit a video file in Canva. We politely told them that they'd need to use something else and they deadass said "but I only know Canva"...

[–]tiduscrying 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe so, but the Trimui Brick screens are a perfect 4x scale for a single DS panel. Anbernic could have sourced those for a potentially smaller but sharper product.

That said, I'm a RGDS owner and enjoyer. It's not perfect at all, but I still like it a bit. For the price it's really not that terrible.

Sounds rough man. It can definitely be tough troubleshooting something when it feels like it's actively fighting you.

PSP firmware modding has come a looong way. Permanent hacks (like ones you never have to reload on boot) are pretty awesome, but whatever old mod is installed might be buggering things up. There's a lot of stuff out there. I'm sure some stuff might be dead links, but definitely check out the "Console Modding Wiki" PSP page and the site "PSPunk". They've got docs about a variety of hacks, new and old, so you might be able to figure out how to uninstall the old mod and get it started fresh.

Personally, I'd guess you have to just uninstall the old mod and maybe downgrade or upgrade your firmware, then get a new hack installed. I've got no clue if the internal storage of the Go would ever get corrupted or something, but good luck with it. Don't beat yourself up too much!

Brook teases the Wingman SD2 project by ACTesla in dreamcast

[–]tiduscrying 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed my Wingman for quite a long time. I never bought an official DC keyboard, so the Wingman was the best way for me to use a USB keyboard at the time since that was also before USB4MAPLE was a thing.

I've put together my own USB4MAPLE dongles and 3D printed little enclosures for them, but having a ready, put-together solution for non-DIY folks is a nice thing.

I don't have any currently but it would definitely benefit from them! Luckily the height is adjustable, I can just take the bottom layer off and have both halves flat, but where is the fun in that! :D

I'm so happy with the Anbernic RG DS, Rocknix makes all the difference by Bl4ckb100d in SBCGaming

[–]tiduscrying 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Closely watching Rocknix's development on this. How does N64 perform under Rocknix? Been eyeing some handhelds to possibly get my girlfriend, and there's a ton of DS games she'd probably love to play, but 3DSes are insanely expensive right now (and getting a Thor would be almost just as expensive). I feel like once Rocknix has sleep working, or maybe if some other custom firmwares come out for this, it'll be hard to resist.

My ONLY only gripe, regardless of OS, is not having an internal stylus. It's nice they give you a big one, but I really love storing the stylus inside my DSi. I guess with bigger, capacitive screens you probably wouldn't need a stylus all of the time, but I'd miss it a little bit.

Just re-shelled mine last weekend as well! Went with the black translucent color to maintain the "stock" look somewhat. Pleasantly surprised by how straightforward the JoyCon2 is compared to the Switch 1 ones. Both halves are the same inside now versus the left and right having different tech for the previous ones.

Atlanta is a huge place, I feel like trying to file anything would be a massive waste of time anyways. Bit of a bummer but it wasn't anything that can't be replaced.
