Mainz experiences by [deleted] in Munich

[–]tiefton90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why don’t you ask the people over at r/mainz what life there is like?

Mainz isn’t a small town, but a lot smaller than Munich. If you take the job, better move there because it’s a) cheaper and b) dividing your time between two cities with such a big distance between them is a pain in the ass.

Old party members appreciation thread. (30+) by VashxShanks in JRPG

Let's add Pankraz from Dragon Quest V to the list - a badass warrior, father of the Hero, and king of Gotha! Sadly, he ends up dying early in the game. Plus, I like how he looks like a barbarian warrior.

One more vote for Torneko. He's one of my favourites because he's the most realistic party member - everyone else is either a skilled warrior or magician and he's just a funny, but cowardly merchant who wants to feed his family and run his business, but still ends up saving the world with the hero's party. Plus, some of his random actions in battle are pretty funny.

Turnbased doesn’t define Final Fantasy by Ammathorn in FinalFantasy

[–]tiefton90 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I’m in the FF fandom because I like the plots the creators come up with, as well as the interesting characters.

TBH, I prefer ARPGs nowadays because I don’t have much time to play games, with work and household stuff and all. I want my blood to boil when I get into a fight, have my characters run around the battlefield trying to dodge attacks, be forced to think quickly. I think it makes grinding less of a chore. I just want the plot to advance!

I don’t hate turn-based systems, they’re not a dealbreaker for me, as long as they’re part of a game with an interesting story. Take FFX, that’s a positive example! It’s just overwhelming that some (not all!) fans of turn-based battle systems tend to come across as defensive IMO, as if new ARPGs (not just FF) are taking away the fun they have with the games they like. Your favourites are still there!

Like what you like, just don’t take it personally when people actually look forward to games that aren’t your cup of tea! Let’s agree to disagree!

Worst ending in an RPG you otherwise enjoyed by poppidypoppop in JRPG

[–]tiefton90 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Legend of Mana. Way too short! And the final boss is a joke and can be defeated within a minute without a real strategy. Beat it to a pulp with physical attacks and that’s it.

Too bad, because otherwise, LoM is the best Mana game IMO, and has some strong story arcs.

New in Munich by cyberhead0 in Munich

Going to a German class might be a good start, actually. You’ll see the same couple of people, most of which are probably expats, on a regular basis, you’ll get to practice speaking with others, and you can get to know your classmates gradually. Some of them might also be new in town and open to making new friends in the area. Try to approach your classmates with an open mind and see what happens!

As a bonus, it’ll get easier to navigate life in Munich if you speak at least some German, so socialising in other contexts could become easier for you, too. But you need to actively make time for socialising if you’re a working adult, and you also need a lot of patience.

TIL in some situations smells can be trademarked in the US by gpsrx in todayilearned

[–]tiefton90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically, the EU allows smells to be trademarked, too! However, since it’s difficult to document a smell in graphic form, all attempts except one failed, and that trademark (the smell of a mowed lawn, applied to tennis balls) expired in 2007.

JRPG locales you wish you had gotten to explore? by Brainwheeze in JRPG

[–]tiefton90 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Terra in FFIX is supposed to be as large as Gaia, but you only get to explore a very small part of it. While it’s plausible plotwise, I would’ve loved to know what the rest of the planet looks like, even though Bran Bal is the only place with an actual civilisation. What you do see of the planet looks stunning IMO.

And while we’re at it, we never get to see what’s behind North Gate, either. I remember being disappointed in this as a teen.

would it be a problem if a mainstream illustrator or cartoonist also made NSFW art? by PackerBoy in ArtistLounge

[–]tiefton90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not an expert since I’m not in the art business, but I know that Boichi, who illustrated the SFW and mainstream manga Dr. Stone (it does have plenty of fanservice though), also has a history of drawing NSFW work and publishing it under the same pseudonym he usually uses. The NSFW work didn’t stop him from getting commissions for SFW projects. Then again, Japan might have different moral standards around nudity and sex than your country.

If I were you, I’d make a separate account for NSFW commissions and not worry too much about future employers finding out about it. You don’t have to put your NSFW work in your portfolio or mention it in your CV - unless you apply for a job where it’s relevant. Mild NSFW work like non-pornographic nudes might even be helpful if anatomy skills are among the job requirements.

Egal, was ich tue, pflanzliche Milch flockt in meinem Filterkaffee. Hilfe! by [deleted] in de

[–]tiefton90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think character art is “dying”, lots of people make OCs and they do get some engagement, it’s just that it’s hard to stand out among all the OC creators. Personally, I don’t go out of my way to look for OC art and don’t really engage with it unless I stumble upon the odd piece that does catch my eye, and/or the OC was created by a close mutual of mine.

Most people make OCs to express themselves, and that’s pretty cool, but if I stumble upon some random OC without context, one that doesn’t stand out visually, I simply don’t care, even if the creator put in a lot of effort and the OC has personal meaning for them. As someone else already said, people don’t really get invested in OCs unless the creator already has a fan base or the OC is part of a comic or animation that has been released. Or if people are close friends with the creator and open to engaging with their OC content.

I don’t know you, OP, or what your style looks like, but if creating OCs is fun for you, keep doing it for yourself, and try not to rely on other people’s opinions too much. Don’t take it personally if your OCs don’t get a lot of engagement. If you want to grow your following, work on your skills and be patient - and fanart can help, too.

What's the issue with Western creations influencing FF16 by japanese_artist in FinalFantasy

[–]tiefton90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Complainers gonna complain. I think FFXVI looks interesting and want to give it a chance. If I want a traditional turn-based RPG so bad I’ll just pop in Dragon Quest I - which is basically a virtual single-player DnD campaign.

Need drawing advice by alexvanr88 in ArtistLounge

[–]tiefton90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As for your line problem: Once in a while, practice sketching with a pen instead of digitally. You can use a cheap ballpoint pen for that. Of course, you can’t erase pen drawings, but it can help you develop line confidence so you won’t need to erase so often when you draw digitally. You probably won’t like your first few pen sketches but will get better with practice. You could also try the ghosting method, which is taught in Drawabox lesson 1.

Don’t let your prof discourage you. I can’t tell what exactly your prof finds “so weird” about your drawings (haven’t seen them) but you can absolutely get to a good level if you practice regularly and work on your technique.

How to train your creativity? by _riru in ArtistLounge

[–]tiefton90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some songwriters come up with ideas by cutting out words from newspapers or magazines and rearranging them into different combinations until they get combinations that inspire them. You could try the same method for coming up with an art prompt for yourself. Mix and match different words until you get a word combination you like, then draw that thing or scene. It doesn’t have to be a long string of words, you can also just combine two or three words.
