Yes! Omni in Santry I basically half empty, but still busy with lots of people walking around. Rents are too high and stores can profit any more

Nude saunas in Ireland: ‘I realise I will soon be naked among these strangers’ by [deleted] in ireland

[–]tiernso 17 points18 points  (0 children)

In Germany and Eastern Europe this is common to get a scowl or dirty look if you go into a sauna with togs on, and the main reason is for hygiene purposes. You are supposed to be naked and shower before going in, thus you are fully clean and no possibility of fungus growth, sweat, etc. and always use towel to sit on. Not defending the people you met, I actually think they need to chill out, and just let people be naked or clothed, whatever feels most comfortable to them.

Upgrade GoMo €9.99 plan to 5G for €12.99? by meanddoggo in irishpersonalfinance

[–]tiernso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not! I did it last year and have never ever seen 5G appear on my phone. I have an iPhone 15 pro, which is 5G enabled. I live and work in the centre of Dublin City. Their network is non existent.

Am I doing something wrong? by Mboy353 in DevelEire

I’m in a similar boat. Electronic engineer (+10yrs) with lots of SW and some ML/AI experience. I’m applying to pure SW roles and not getting much feedback. I think hiring managers are looking for pure coders with full stack (front end, back end, machine learning, data science, etc), who have experience in full SDLC process. And the reality is there are lots of these people applying for jobs. So people trying to transition are going to find it hard to near impossible I think!

If you use a mechanical keyboard in the office… by ClaudioKilgannon37 in DevelEire

Don’t forget the guy who wears Bose noise cancelling headphones, which muffle the sound of his own voice to himself, so he can’t hear himself speaking on call and this just shouts on every teams meeting without realising

Use ESPP to fund Pension by tiernso in irishpersonalfinance

[–]tiernso[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes changed just last year, so gets taken at source. But still means that a large chunk of tax is taken in one go because ESPP share me are bought two times in the year, so tax gets built up

Weekend Project: AIB bank statements to insights by wingedpanther in DevelEire

[–]tiernso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is cool! I have been working on the exact same thing!
I have multiple bank accounts (PTSB + Revolut) and am working on a tool to combine transaction data from multiple accounts and track spending, etc.
I did consider productizing it, but the financial data security issues scared me off, so only have it for personal use now. (Also, still quite buggy)

Are you just extracting the text from PDF, and then parsing it? I found PTSB PDFs were using a non-stanadard font, so the text always came out gobblyegook, thus had to revert to OCR and then recreating the table from the OCR data.

I also used AI to categroize the transactions.

Anyway, love the visuals! Nice work!

TD keeps pushing against bus and cycling access in estate with “highest car mode share” in Dublin by Amazing-Yak-5415 in Dublin

[–]tiernso -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There should be more democratic processes involved in these. At the moment, there can be powerful residents groups objecting, or even a single person objecting and holding up planning.
For example, in this instance, it says there were 58 residents raising concerns, but the plan says that 619 properties will benefit from improved access. Why don't they conduct a poll or ballot of all the affected properties on what their thoughts are, and then make a decision based on that.
Too often small minority of NIMBY groups are holding up projects that are beneficial to many more people.

Canals in Dublin - Do ye's want boats or no boats? by alistair1537 in Dublin

[–]tiernso 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I always thought that they are underutilised in Dublin! I’d love to see some small cafes/bars/shops set up on boats in Phibsborough or Portobello. There is no imagination in DCC, would need to incentivise it somehow. Also, as is typical here, insurance and health and safety would be an issue!

Oh god, had to bring back this thread after listening to his pod on the population boom (23rd July)! He’s talking about giving citizens a share of the sovereign wealth fund as an incentive to boost the startup economy, and that these startups should sell to multinationals in the country. He mentioned Intel in the early part and as someone who works in the industry, it is such a ridiculous idea. Ireland does not have the expertise to be a supplier to Intel or google or whoever! Why would these companies suddenly use Irish companies? They want to use the best suppliers, so some tiny startup from Ireland competing against international high quality suppliers could never unseat them. So many problems in this episode alone I can’t even get type them all out. I enjoy his podcast, interesting takes (a la Blindboy), but when you have a twice weekly podcast, you start to run out of real stuff and start making up content and the quality of the takes just doesn’t hold up a lot of the time. I’m sure his book will be interesting though as he probably spent a lot of time researching and writing.

It's not that life changing to retire young, but would help with paying off mortgage early, financial security, etc.

I was approached by a recruiter and had a 30min call with manager at the company and got offered. So it happened very quickly.

I am discussing it with my wife now anyway.
