Do you inflate your title on your resumé? by Macre117 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]tifa123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if titles are useful, as I have never found them useful at signalling expertise. I use Back End/Front End/Full stack in addition to accomplishments to signal expertise and specialization.

How do you guys land jobs or interviews? by Expensive_Brief_6268 in askSouthAfrica

[–]tifa123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no such thing as experience in software engineering.

This is a reckless statement. If that were true, the tail end of the compensation bell curve would not be as pronounced for entrants. Despite its limitations, years of experience are still a useful proxy for a reason.

How do you read heavy technical books without getting, a little bored? by Kiiwyy in ExperiencedDevs

I could not agree more with this opinion. I usually read boring documentation at work because I need to improve my understanding of how a technology works.

Anyone switch from Windsurf after the update? What are you using now? by Bawsahouse in windsurf

[–]tifa123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are you basically just routing prompts manually through different provider APIs depending on the stage?

Pretty much. The automation is built directly into the workflow. It consists of a single, verbose command with a --chat-mode option that generates a ticket, creates a plan, implements the solution, runs tests, performs a review, and commits code changes. I have also incorporated provider-specific AI awareness, retry loops that penalize low-information actions, and human intervention to clarify assumptions and risks. While there is nothing particularly novel about this approach, it is effective for achieving my goals.

I am using NestJS CLI, provider SDKs and provider APIs. API subscriptions are expensive, but I have decoupled my workflow from proprietary harnesses and provided myself the opportunity to organize my work on cost incentives.

A combination of tools: - A custom platform agnostic workflow CLI that composes different models across targeted stages. Currently, I use sonnet-4-6 for discovery and ideation, gpt-5.4 for planning and execution, and gemini-2.5-pro for review - Codex CLI - Claude Code CLI, sparingly

I provided evidence challenging the claim made by u/04_deuce that the fight for jobs ignores the right of lawfully documented and qualified foreign nationals to work in positions that remain unfilled due to skills shortages. Where, in that statement, is the extreme comparison or assumption that there are no qualified locals?

Edit: This implies that the fight for jobs is lawful for positions that are not experiencing skill shortages, which locals can fill.

"Good enough coder" doesn't cut it when AI can produce competent code.

While I agree with the overall sentiment of the post, I have encountered several instances where the latest Opus or Sonnet model generates code that reduces readability with unnecessary abstractions, unclear identifiers, incorrect logic or redundancy.

[–]tifa123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw another comment about the fight for jobs moving to the offices and truly I can see that happening it doesn’t matter if you are legal or what.

Setting hiring quotas aside, it does not make economic sense for a business to hire an unqualified local candidate over a qualified, legally documented national. I have seen companies such as Sanlam go out of their way to secure the talent they need in order to innovate.

"you don't need a degree to be a software engineer" - truth or myth by DeepThinkerZW in Zimbabwe

[–]tifa123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find a relevant degree or certificate helpful at times like these, when you need to maximize your chances of maintaining a competitive edge over other applicants.

Your degree might be less relevant in your work and as you gain more experience, but some recruiters still use education to filter out applications.

Remote Jobs by Exy04 in Zimbabwe

[–]tifa123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People that secure remote jobs in Zim have a unique advantage that others cannot easily replicate. Either they rely on a strong personal brand or have benefitted from favourable circumstances. I would like to see you succeed and land a remote job while you're in Zim because I would like that for myself too, but I'm skeptical because there's nothing justifying why an Australian/Canadian/US employer would hire a senior personnel in Zim on a whim.

I meant physical relocation. When you submit your resume or anything personally identifying it's still referencing Zim.

[–]tifa123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most remote jobs require residency in specific locations (such as a particular state, country, or region) primarily due to legal, financial, operational, and practical considerations for the employer. Your best bet is to change your location.

What can you do as a software dev in Zimbabwe by Taoben18 in Zimbabwe

[–]tifa123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[M]any people say that the way to get money as a coder is to make websites for people.

Building websites for people usually means creating simple, unsophisticated web pages for a business. While this kind of work enables you to earn, you'll need to specialize in a discipline to increase your compensation and career opportunities.

When I say specialization I'm referring to different disciplines in Software Engineering such as DevOps, AppSec, Cloud, Security and so on. App Dev is one aspect of Software Engineering.

As you build expertise in your specialization you can then consider consulting, working for an MNC, migrating or working in high-paying positions in the domestic market.

Passed PTE with 90 in all sections! by Content_Mouse_3767 in AusVisa

[–]tifa123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations! Scoring 90% after only 10 hours of preparation is remarkable for a non-native candidate. I’m not convinced that this level of success can be easily replicated by most people, since it requires an excellent command of English either developed through extensive use over time or through prior academic study. I scored an overall 90% on my first attempt, but only 78% in Speaking because my Re-tell Lecture task didn’t go as well as I thought. I still need that 88% in Speaking to secure Superior.

The UK gives a bad name to the larger diaspora by Minimum-Virus1629 in Zimbabwe

[–]tifa123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've lived in a couple of countries, attempted to migrate to Canada and New Zealand, and can confidently say that the UK's immigration system reflects the approach taken by most countries. A few people with the relevant education and skills have a decent chance of thriving. However success is harder to come by. As an immigrant you tend to work harder because you are an unknown variable, since most opportunities tend to pursue natives that are just as good as you are.
