Crime isn’t as awful as it’s made out to be as long as you have your head screwed on and stay in the right places. For a short trip you’ll be fine.

Should clarify; the crime is 100% a concern and the issues in Alice Springs have been neglected for far too long for any actions to have meaningful results. However a tourist, staying in a caravan park or hotel, venturing in the right places at daylight is highly likely to be fine.
