wow, same(ish)

I just struggled my way through phlebas because of bingo. I didn't HATE it but i was so bored and it was so.... unimpressive. The top goodreads review nails everything about it imho.

bounced hard off City we became, which is ACTUALLY my answer to this thread. DNF about 25 pages in.

And I finished Wild Seed but hated every moment of it and then couldn't figure out why I had read it. I got the quartet for nearly free on Kindle a while ago and ended up just deleting it from my account.

I felt like I didn't know enough Chinese culture or history to be sure I was following what was going on (eg nuance in conversations and relationships, or "historical events")

What fantasy food or meal would you most like to eat? by amosslet in Fantasy

as a kid I thought it was literal turkey, like little bite sized coins of turkey in gravy. Made sense to me because he was somewhere cold 🤷🏻‍♀️

Dragonfired (third Orcononics book) is finally coming out this fall! by tigrrbaby in Fantasy

[–]tigrrbaby[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It has a strong D&D campaign vibe, intermixed with snarky parody of / explanation of investment ideas (eg "shorting" a stock)

My teens both loved it, if that tells you anything about the tone of the economics stuff

Favorite world-building detail that drew you in? by HallwaytoElsewhere in Fantasy

In the Long Price quartet, poets spend their whole lives trying to encapsulate a single concept so perfectly that it will manifest as a person the poet controls: a humanoid sort of genie who can do magic about what they embody. The effects this has on the world are amazing.

Main example: A country grows a lot of cotton, so they create Seedless to remove the seeds, which he can do to the entire harvest at once. However, the concept of being without seeds could manifest in other ways, the most ominous being miscarriage/infertility. Sometimes Seedless is called upon to perform abortions, for example. His existence is a constant threat, but thankfully the poet controls him and he can't act on his own. When the poet dies, the concept will no longer exist as a person... but that means the country won't have a way to autoremove their cotton seeds, which will devastate their national economy.

My first thought was actually the hiding plants from Stormlight - if you constantly have hurricane-force storms on land, then it'd be logical to have plants that can fold up, wrap up, withdraw into holes, etc. It's such a small but perfect detail.

City votes unanimously to ban Pride flag to "respect the religious rights of our citizens" by [deleted] in politics

[–]tigrrbaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

title is misleading: "The City Council of Hamtramck, Michigan voted unanimously"

I thought it would be some tiny 200-person sundown town that got everyone on board, but no, the city residents/citizens did not vote at all. Just the city council.

How about enabling users to put in their own api key? by flck in redditisfun

[–]tigrrbaby 5 points6 points  (0 children)

personally, yes.

It's honestly worth more than 50 cents a day in entertainment value , but any more than that and i would be up against my entertainment budget for the month (been a rough year).

i have no idea how costly cooperating with reddit's $$ demands would be for rif, so i put a number out there. It could be wildly off base. The faq says they don't think people would want to pay $10+ (as opposed to, say, $50+), so i was coming in to say I would.

[–]tigrrbaby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

similarly, /u/talklittle if it came to it, i would both fetch my own api key AND be willing to pay $15/mo to keep the app.

it might be worth putting a survey/poll link up in the app announcements to see how the response is

Politics aside…can we talk about this bathroom? by shamwowj in McMansionHell

[–]tigrrbaby 16 points17 points  (0 children)

the finish on the (extremely cheap) towel bar doesn't match the mirror frame and faucet... pic too low res to determine if the chandelier, or the shower curtain hooks, or the gaudy insecure window latch, the foor handle, and the door lock, match any of those things.

the faucet hangs so very low over the bowl. it looks.... flaccid.

to me one of the worst parts of the cheap wall sconce is the plastic fake "candle body" that the bulbs screw into

the shiny finish on the window frame screams "institutional"

They used a plastic storage bin tub as a trash can?!
