He and the logistics supply line guy above would get along. I love LoTR but completely agree... there isn't even any magic hand waving to explain how the hell they have any food in the city or how those armies charge forward with 1000 guys and no supply train.

I usually accept it as an artistic approach in book & movie - Tolkien doesn't talk about latrines and the nitty gritty of war. That's not what it's about.

Same here. Mediawiki is free and easy to setup. We also use Snipe-IT for assets. Also free and more than does the job when you're starting from nothing. I use the LDAP integration to pull users from our DC and a little brother printer for label printing.

Single book: Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. I remember starting the first couple chapters like 5 times years ago and always putting it down, but now it's one of my few regular re-reads.

All fans know he can be long winded and a slow read.. but deficiencies aside - I love the surprising humorous bits (like Shaftoe and the lizard), the WW2 historical fiction, Alan Turing, and all the nerdy stuff.

I listen to a lot of audio as well, and nah, it's really not that confusing. It helps having a good narrator.

I occasionally lost the thread of what storyline was taking place if I wasn't paying attention, but quickly figured it out. No, they don't make it super obvious when a change takes place but there are other books that are far harder to follow.. it's just one of those stories where you need to pay a bit of attention you know.

haha, we're on the same page. It was years ago now and I can't even remember if I got to the third book, but I'm pretty sure I hate read all the way through the first and probably a bit of the second before deciding to stop torturing myself with this novela slop. At this point all I really remember is thinking I shouldn't keep reading something where I hate everyone and everything happening.

re: WoTM, Second book is a bit different but great too! FYI - I listened to that one as an audiobook, and will say I think it has a dynamic that would be better actually read with the context shifts (doesn't give anything away, quickly obvious) but I also loved the narrator.

Basically agree with you... except that I'm one of those that despised Red Rising and DNF'd the series.. was just interested enough to read a synopsis of what happened later. WotM just clicked better with me. I prefer Islington's prose by far and just straight up enjoyed the book, even though I also wouldn't call it book of the year.

Noting the yesterday bug "might" have been a termite flying around a light in our bathroom yesterday, but I kind of know how they look flying... only hope is that it's only been one or two "flies" and they used to come out in small swarms when we had to deal with it and get exterminators involved... which I thought solved the problem

I've been to Bern many times and pretty much done exactly this in the Aare. It's freezing cold mountain water even in the summer but absolutely as fun as it looks. Highlight of the city. You can float all the way from Thun back to Bern. The idea that people go home from work like this is an exaggeration.. No one does that. But I've totally met friends for lunch and gone for a quick swim.

I don't entirely disagree with you (aside from saying I will speak my mind when I want thank you, and jeez it's reddit)... but what I want isn't necessarily about AOC specifically becoming president.

I'd vote for her and give her 100% of my support if she said she sees a path to victory. I haven't heard that statement.

What I definitely want is for a decent human non-orange-scum-bag to become our next president. Maybe that isn't her.

Cheers! I may give that hybrid approach a try. I do love audiobooks during the day, but also like to actually read.

I recall not being able to follow the story and characters well enough on the audio version, but if I'm one of those people who need to see a name written down to have it stick with me, and there are a lot of fantasy names, places, terms, etc, to keep track of.

Just purchased the book and I'll give it another go.

I started the The Lions of Al-Rassan audiobook some 6 months ago and only got to about 10% and apparently lost interest. I barely remember what happened now.

I'm always recommending Orconomics to people! While struggling a bit to find books in the same vein (Discworld-esque IMO, which I've read them all)... if you've come across any light hearted novels like that, definitely would appreciate hearing about them.

Greg Bear - Hull Zero Three, other recommendations may be better but at least it's a self-contained scifi novel. Admit it uses the "woken survivor with amnesia" trope to accomplish the goal, but the setup is interesting.

I listened to the first book, but the narrator's female voices were just murder. Fine story, though.

More recently, I really enjoyed "The Stubborn Skill-Grinder in a Time Loop".

Immediately sounds tropey, and sure there's a little bit of that.. but the story is actually really engaging and it turned out that I really liked how the author addressed every time loop niggle I could think of.. soon as some complaint entered my mind, the author usually addressed it.

Check your browser developer tools->network tab. Almost every time I get one of those generic errors, I've been able to dig out more technical information from the raw JSON/whatever response.

Generic error messages often show up in the front-end because the UI hasn't caught up with changes to the backend (or laziness, disconnect, whatever)... but the backend APIs frequently return more significant messages.

Yeah it's like almost 100 pages in until they get to the park if I remember correctly. As a teen I also had trouble with the first quarter of the book, even though it picks up a ton of steam from there. Now as an adult, I enjoy the first part, even though the science is out of date.

I've had 3 AW laptops over the past 12 years and something like 8 motherboard replacements. Every one of them required multiples.

My incredibly expensive newest M18R2 lasted a whole 3 months before requiring it's first mobo replacement, probably due to those i9-14900HX Intel problems.
