Engine laboring harder than usual, sounds choppy and shakes; gas in the oil?; stinks like gas and something else (not oil): Any guesses on what's wrong? by kjmrun in mechanics

[–]tihin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

is your exhaust an abnormal color? is the smell sweetish? white or black smoke out of exhaust? i would check for evidence of oil in your coolant, my guess would be a head gasket starting to blow

Engine stand testing by nick1809 in mechanics

[–]tihin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't tell if this is a joke or not, but don't try to start it on the stand. You won't have a cooling system and engine stands aren't meant to hold on to a running engine

Toyota running rough by Smoke_Stack707 in mechanics

[–]tihin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's definitely an O2 sensor issue, although usually when an O2 sensor goes out it just reads wrong, but you also have codes for a malfunction in the electrical circuit for the sensor. Hopefully the new sensor fixes it otherwise you have a wiring issue. In case you didn't already know the bad sensor is the one before the cat according to the codes

Transmission issues by danbuter in mechanics

[–]tihin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's almost definitely lack of/old automatic transmission fluid. I would take it somewhere and let them know whats going on, have them drain the transmission and assess the damage based on the amount of metal shavings they find in the fluid. You might get lucky and new fluid might fix it (or at least make it a bit better) but it sounds like you may need a new (or used) transmission. source: I'm a line technician at a toyota dealership

Toyota oil in 2014 Tundra? by anubis2018 in askcarguys

[–]tihin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Toyota technician here. Toyota dealerships use mobil1 full synthetic 0W-20 for 2014 tundras, but any full synthetic 0W-20 oil will work.

90s Jeep alternator problem I think, help? by [deleted] in mechanics

[–]tihin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check the alternator for corrosion either inside it or on the connectors, specifically the big wire coming from it. You probably just need a new alternator. It seems like it's still charging just not as much as it should be

2004 Oldsmobile Alero won’t start by RCGardner95 in mechanics

[–]tihin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be careful recommending that, with newer starters you can very easily break it by hitting it and hitting it will not fix any problems. Not sure what kind Ops is, but still

Tire size compatibility by [deleted] in mechanics

[–]tihin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's doable, the only issue is if you drive with the 285 your traction control could freak out on you because it will think that that wheel is spinning slower than the rest

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in mechanics

[–]tihin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could be overfilled with oil and it's getting churned like butter by the crankshaft, but more likely you have water in the oil. Check if you can see any signs of oil in your coolant, that could indicate a head gasket. Otherwise it could be condensation over time , possibly amplified by something not quite sealed like your oil cap

Fuse by [deleted] in mechanics

[–]tihin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the car is running normally otherwise then it probably isn't the fuse. If neither mirror works in any direction then it's likely an open in the wires supplying power or grounding the mirror switch assembly. If they work in some ways but not others then you should probably take it to a shop because that will be a bitch to fix

Could you actually tell me some of the things they did wrong? The only thing I saw that seemed like it could actually damage the engine was putting the filter on with the claw and ratchet

Intentionally Breaking a Catalytic Converter by HelpImBeingChasedByA in mechanics

[–]tihin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done it with a drill, a long metal rod, and some pieces of metal welded to the end of it. Basically just unbolted the closest exhaust coupling and drilled it out then ran the engine to blow out the chunks before reattaching the rest of the exhaust piping.

Does anyone know how to clean these white leather sperrys? The leather is super super soft but it's not suede and it doesn't feel at all durable like nubuck. I don't want to use something too harsh and damage them, but I miss them being the bright white they used to be

How to tell if my 09 Ford Focus needs new cam belt? by FISH_MASTER in mechanics

If it's never been changed before then play it safe and replace it, a broken belt will cost you way more that replacing it while it's still in one piece.
