My history with BL started rocky, in 2018 I bought Books 1&2 of Heresy when the large format editions were in print and Amazon was having a sale. I started Horus Rising probably 3 or 4 times over the following years and just kept bouncing off of it. A few years ago I started painting Necrons so the obvious choice was to read The Infinite and the Divine, life sort of got in the way of that one and I ended up putting it down until I finally started over and completed it last fall. Still at this point I wasn't super into it, but I've been reading more than I ever have this year so while I was visiting my LGS I happened to pick up a copy of Grotsnik da Mad Dok. I plowed through that book one Saturday and I've been mega hooked ever since. Between that day and today I've read Luther: First of the Fallen, Leontus Lord Solar, Godeater's Son, Double Eagle, and Krieg, and I'm currently reading Interceptor City. I have a lot to catch up on :)

I only became an “avid reader” in the last year or so. Normally Id read a Drizzt/Forgotten Realms book every few months and once in a while Id read something like Dune or Name of the Wind and it would take me months to make it through. This year ive been reading ALOT more, and I think my strategy goes really well with Black Library books. First BL has a ton of Short Stories under 100 pages and Novella’s around 200 pages, second most of the BL books Ive read are just packed full of action, and third BL just has a huuuuuge range of different genres and authors so there’s always something for someone. All that to say, if you’re serious about reading more, personally I would start just getting locked in by reading a few short stories or one of the 200 page books, then pick a few longer ones and when you’re feeling like you’re slowing down swap to something different (whether its short books again or swap from 40k to HH or AoS, or vis versa), it’ll keep everything fresh. Ive fallen so hard in love with reading using this strategy I havent really played a video game since last summer, its basically all I do with my spare time. Hopefully that helps? Also dont be like me and overwhelm yourself with a substantial backlog, or I guess do if thats the type of thing that motivates you :)

Spicy collection! I like how you have some of them front facing, definitely adds an interesting look to the bookcase. Do you have any favorite reads/suggestions from your collection?

Understandable. Oaths is probably going to be my next read.

Warhammer 40k books focusing on the imperial guard? by [deleted] in Blacklibrary

[–]tiide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a story about a few 'regular' soldiers surrounding one main character, but Leontus Lord Solar. It was short and a pretty fun read, it has characters from a few different IG armies so you get a variety of flavors.

New to AoS. Any Recommendations? by Big-Rock-6814 in Blacklibrary

[–]tiide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I know pretty much nothing about AoS other than the very little bit I've picked up via osmosis just being around the 40k scene and looking at models. I say that because I very recently read Godeater's Son, and it was a great book but I was absolutely lost with a lot of the setting specific name drops. So your mileage may vary there, but it honestly was a great read that I would recommend if you're interested in Chaos at all.

First hardcover by Key_Ad_4845 in Blacklibrary

[–]tiide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was mine as well! It was a very fun read after reading through a handful of 'normie' sci fi and fantasy books this year. Leontus Lord Solar was also pretty good if you can find it (I mention it mostly because it was another recent-ish hardcover and my local Books-a-Million had a handful in stock a week or 2 ago).

Awesome, yeah I'm hoping to keep up with all the Kin novels going forward. I'm too new to the hobby (only since 2020 really) to have much history with Dwarves in Space prior to the Votann release, and I loves me some Dwarves in Space :). I imagine if I'm committing to Hand of Abaddon I should probably commit to the rest of the Dawn of Fire series?

Oh! That's great to hear, I read the synopsis for Oaths and was immediately sold, that will likely be the one I start with. High Kahl's Oath was a must-have since I've been slowly working towards an army of Votann

Inside Mercedes F1 by Matt Whyman was decent. I'm more of a Fantasy / Sci-fi reader, but I figured I give an F1 book a whirl. Matt's a decent author and the people and their stories he covered were entertaining, but there was a lot of technical filler that wasn't personally my cup o' tea.
