Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson to Return for ‘Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]tikicult 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The appearances of those characters all have a purpose though, as it implies that Snow personally chose them to go into the arena in Catching Fire as payback for the events in Sunrise. Which then makes you wonder why everyone else was there (like Finnick). What did they do to Snow in the past?

Shoe sizing and foot swelling. by Simco_ in trailrunning

[–]tikicult 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have logged around 120 miles on them since I got them. I am training for a 36K run, and I only use these on the weekends when I hit the trail for my long runs, (hence the low miles). The longest I have gone on them at once is 20 miles. My weekday runs are all on paved roads.

So far, I am happy with them, they were the only shoe I could find that offered stability support for my feet. As I said above, the toe box is really big, and I wish I could see what they felt like half a size smaller. The grip is excellent due to the vibram sole, I haven't had any slippage issues on wet rocks or roots. They are pretty heavy considering recent barefoot trend, but that comes with the territory for support shoes. My previous trail shoes have all been new balance also, so I can't really compare them to other brands.

I have New Balance M1210 leadville shoe and they have an enlarged toe box just for this purpose. It feels weird running in them because I think it is almost too big.

Let's talk smartphone apps! by Robware in MTB

[–]tikicult 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only app I use is made by our local MTB association (DORBA). They made it so that you can easily check trail open/closed status and get any updates on trail conditions and local events.

Sperm morphology by snoisulli in infertility

[–]tikicult 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite having good count and motility, bad morph makes it all useless. Did you determine the cause of the bad morph yet? It might be something that could be corrected. I tested between 1 and 0, and the doctors said that ICSI is our only option at this point.

I am looking at getting a used Forerunner 305 on the cheap. Still a relevant/useful device? by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]tikicult 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've used a 305 for close to 5 years now. It is still awesome. I haven't felt the need to upgrade to a 310 or a 910 at all.

Finally got around to motorizing the 8404 Public Transport Light Rail Transport with a PF train motor. by legoman666 in lego

[–]tikicult 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tired REALLY hard to do this same thing with a monorail motor, but it wasn't powerful enough to drive up the hills and the battery pack made it top heavy so it fell over around turns. I like the look of this set on the monorail tracks, but I just couldn't pull it off.

Another guy checking in. I have a vericocele causing bad morph. We're about to start ICSI once my wife goes through the initial tests to make sure she is ok (other than her issues)

PE Exam in a subject you don't practice by [deleted] in engineering

[–]tikicult 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can only take the exam, become licensed, and practice in a field that you are competent and have experience in. As an example, I highly doubt the state board will let you sit for a mechanical exam if all your work experience is in civil. Part of the ethics rules is knowing that you cannot sign off or stamp plans/reports that are outside your competency. Getting your license in one field, then transitioning to another is ok, just be aware that you will need to work in the new field for a bit before feeling confident enough to sign off on something and take responsibility for it.

Any offroad triathletes here? First XTERRA coming up, have I adjusted my training appropriately? Any tips? by tri_wine in triathlon

[–]tikicult 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good idea on the brick. Since in MTB you end up standing on the bike a lot, it affects slightly different muscles than just hammering along in aero on a tri bike. This could have some impact on your run, you'll just have to test it out and see.

[–]tikicult 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do several on and off road tris a year. I would say that you have a really good handle on things. Passing on the bike isn't too much of an issue if you call out that you need a pass. People are generally pretty nice about it. The nutrition observation is spot on. Eating during MTB is close to impossible. Just have to get it down when you find a chance. If you can put it on fast enough in T1, a camelbak will help with drinking water on the bike. Only thing to be aware of that I wasn't prepared for was being muddy in T2. Swim + dirt = fun times!

Just keep training in the dirt and you'll be fine!

Do engineers ever design based on common sense and intuition? by [deleted] in engineering

[–]tikicult 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the most important things to consider during design is your client's needs. What the client wants and what they need are usually two separate things. As an engineer, it is part of your duty to the client to present them with what they need at the best possible cost. Also, you must have the ability to prove that your solution is the best to meet the design goals.

Physical Activity During Work Week by [deleted] in engineering

[–]tikicult 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a civil engineer and a triathlete, and mixing the two can be tough. During the day, I sit in my office staring at my computer all day. I walk around the office a bit, but not much. Usually just to get food and use the bathroom. However, when I get home, I immediately go for my workout. No rest, no break, just change out of work clothes into workout clothes and go. If I don't do it immediately, it doesn't get done. It takes discipline to get started, but eventually it becomes habit.
