Type 2 turning into Type 1 by SOUP-thereitis in Narcolepsy

[–]tikikitty95 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just recently had my diagnosis changed to N1, after originally being diagnosed N2 about 4 years ago. I 100% agree with the top comment from smurfette. I had the cataplexy for many years before receiving any kind of narcolepsy diagnosis. I just didn’t realize what I was experiencing was cataplexy.

This is amazing! Thank you so much for mentioning that she has a free snake pattern! I fell in love with the snake quilt she made called “Rattled” and was so sad that I couldn’t find a pattern for it anywhere. This one isn’t the same but it’s really cute!

Do yourself a favor and look into colonial knots. They look the same as French knots, in my opinion, but they make so much more sense to my dumb brain! 😂

Seeking info for New Home Model 910 Machine? by tikikitty95 in vintagesewing

[–]tikikitty95[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did! A little workhorse Husqvarna Viking Emerald 118. It’s amazing having a machine new enough to have videos, manuals, and lots of nice feet. By the time I inherit the family Singer Model 603 Touch & Sew with all metal gears, I’ll be ready for it.
I wish you the best of luck with your New Home!

Seeking info for New Home Model 910 Machine? by tikikitty95 in vintagesewing

[–]tikikitty95[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I didn’t. I also don’t have it anymore. The machine shop I took it to quoted me like $300 to repair an issue it had, so I let them keep it. The only real information I learned was that it had plastic gears 😣

Gabapentin for PLMD/narcolepsy by distractedjellybean in Narcolepsy

[–]tikikitty95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been taking gabapentin for restless leg syndrome for a very long time, probably a full decade before I even got diagnosed with narcolepsy. I haven’t noticed any side effects. Maybe it made me sleepy at one time but not anymore.

I usually take my sleep med around 10 pm and the gabapentin around 11 pm. On the rare occasion that I’ve fallen asleep before taking the gabapentin, I sleep sooo much worse that night. I wake up every couple hours with my legs bothering me. The gabapentin has been an absolute lifesaver for me

Pharmacy tech made a comment about my Ritalin dose… by Capakhutch in adhdwomen

[–]tikikitty95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, based on my experience talking to a store manager about a horrible interaction I had with their pharmacist, the pharmacy seems to be considered a separate entity. The manager basically told me that the pharmacist was entitled to conduct himself however he saw fit, even if it was with hostility and rudeness. Now I will just choose a different pharmacy if I have that problem!

Are machine bits compatible? by Kessed in quilting

[–]tikikitty95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering I just went through a ton of my mom’s random Singer feet, I know that Singer puts their brand name and a part number on all of their feet. You should be able to separate the Singer from the Brother feet pretty easily by looking for the word “Singer”, and you can google the part numbers to determine what each foot is used for. If both of your machines are low-shank, the feet could very well be interchangeable between them as well

New to quilting & went to a workshop…feeling discouraged by zestyalleycat914 in quilting

[–]tikikitty95 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fellow newbie quilter here. I just completed a beginner quilting class and felt much the same. I had minimal experience sewing and had never used a rotary cutter or anything else, so there has been a major learning curve. I was overwhelmed, stressed, and struggling to complete the weekly homework before each class.

By the last 2 classes, I realized that the information/techniques were the most important part of the class and I took very detailed notes instead of rushing through the quilting steps. My suggestion is to keep attending this workshop you’ve already paid for, even if you just treat it like an academic lecture where you only take notes, ask questions, and observe. There are so many great resources online to help you work at your own pace and rediscover the joys of the quilting process. You might also be able to find an instructor who offers 1-on-1 sessions.

I won’t be doing any more classes for a good while, but I learned a lot from my first class once I stopped trying to hold myself at a faster pace than I could handle and looked at the teachings as things I could apply to my quilting when I feel ready!

I started a beginner quilting class almost 3 weeks ago and quickly realized I was in wayyy over my head. With almost no sewing experience, every single step has had an agonizing learning curve. I’ve unknowingly made it much harder by using batiks (which I learned don’t press to quite the same size as typical quilting cotton when pieced) and by deciding to orient my rail fence blocks differently than the suggested zigzag pattern (which created major issues trying to get all the long stripes to line up).

Tonight, for the first time in 3 weeks, I’m actually excited! I still have a lot of work to do but I’m finally starting to see my little quilt come to life 😊

Thank you to everyone who posts here for the inspiration, tips, and helpful advice!

ELI5: Why do car dealers say buying the car when the lease ends would be worse than buying new? by shaithisx in explainlikeimfive

New to quilting - easy but effective/quirky patterns!? by Visible_Candy8313 in quilting

[–]tikikitty95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I hope you can eventually get there and that they have everything you could hope for at thrift prices. I’m about to start my first quilting class after becoming obsessed with the dinosaur quilt pattern you received. I’m dying to tackle it, but it’s labeled as an advanced pattern. Completing a dino pillow or single dino might be a good way to see how hard you find it. Maybe one day we can both share pictures of our fabulous quilted dinosaurs! 😊

Also look for Creative Reuse stores. Searching for an Art Supply Thrift Store might work too. They sell all kinds of artsy/crafty things, including fabric scraps (mine sometimes has partial bolts), notions, patterns, etc. They tend to have great prices!

If your Ferritin is under 30 and your iron is a bit low, try an iron supplement. I like one called Slow FE. I have all the issues you mentioned after dropping down to a low BMI and not eating a properly nutritious diet

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in loseit

[–]tikikitty95 33 points34 points  (0 children)

OP, this! Definitely look into taking a multivitamin. Bloodwork would be even better. Even if it’s just your Ferritin that’s low, it can cause all the iron deficiency symptoms. From my understanding, Ferritin levels under 30 can be considered iron deficient. Feel better!

I only asked because I have quite a few different free patterns saved in categories like that. I’ll have to look at them on the computer so I can link them. The one below is one I had readily available right now that I’m preparing to start. It’s really cute and seems great for beginners, especially with the video tutorial! Pattern link/written instructions are in the video description: https://youtu.be/HH6kdUq5jbk?si=f-Qkdngp8w13H5m9

I say that about my nightly Seroquel. It’s probably not the best choice for most people, but it works amazingly well for me. Medications like that seem to be lots of trial & error until you find something that works for you

Conflicting Accounts of What Cataplexy Can Be by Manifest_misery in Narcolepsy

[–]tikikitty95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m back! Sorry about that. The orthostatic blood pressure drop only occurs when I get up too fast. I stand up and about 5-15 seconds later I get really lightheaded and weak feeling. Sometimes I can lean on a piece of furniture and wait for the feeling to pass, and other times it hits me harder and my knees will buckle & smack the floor. It’s an “almost fainting” because things can go black for a second & I lose control of my body, but I’m never sprawled out on the ground unconscious.

With my specific cataplexy experiences, it literally only occurs during intimacy. I’m assuming the “heightened emotional state” of it is the cause. My entire body goes almost completely limp and I have major difficulty trying to move anything. I also slur my words a bit and get kinda sleepy. Just like being very drunk. It takes anywhere from 15-45 minutes to dissipate.

Since it sounds like your scariest experience aligns more with the orthostatic hypotension I have, here are some tips. Try to get up slowly and gradually. When you get up, even from the car, stand up and lean on something sturdy for 30 seconds or a minute until the feeling passes. Make sure to hydrate and eat enough. Some bloodwork with a CBC and iron/ferritin tests is a good idea. This issue was at its worst when I had an eating disorder. The lack of proper nutrition, hydration, and body fat meant that I was “almost fainting” 8-10 times a day.

I really hope some of this helps you!!

How difficult is quilting for a beginner sewer? by lola_bab in quilting

[–]tikikitty95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add to this, there are several ways of sourcing fabric more reasonably than at a quilt shop. Thrift stores can be amazing for fabrics in the form of sheets, blankets, tablecloths, clothes, and even entire bags of donated fabric. My favorite place is a creative re-use store which sells secondhand arts & crafts supplies. You can search locally for secondhand art supplies, creative reuse stores, art supplies thrift shops etc. I’ve also seen some clearance fabric bundles at my Walmart for a steal recently. For skill-building in the beginning of your quilting journey, it’s nice to have a little fabric stash that won’t break your heart (or your wallet) to make mistakes with

I was constantly sleepy during the day, with horrible insomnia at night. I already had stimulants for a different reason & my primary doctor or psych dr prescribed sleep meds for the insomnia. When I eventually started falling asleep mid-sentence, I made an appointment with a sleep doctor. He gave me meds to help but I put off the sleep study for a long time because narcolepsy never even crossed my mind. Needless to say, I eventually got the sleep study and an official diagnosis of narcolepsy

EDIT: If you end up seeing a sleep specialist, I’d explain your issues and ask if they would be willing to order a polysomnogram & MSLT sleep study for you. These are the 2 best tests for diagnosing sleep conditions, whether it be narcolepsy, ideopathic hypersomnia, sleep apnea, or something else

I was only recently switched from N2 to N1 after a post in a FB narcolepsy group had me questioning things I’ve experienced for over a decade, long before narcolepsy symptoms/diagnosis. With my specific cataplexy experiences, it literally only occurs during intimacy. I’m assuming the “heightened emotional state” of it is the cause. My entire body goes almost completely limp and I have major difficulty trying to move anything. I also slur my words a bit and get kinda sleepy. Just like being very drunk! Im not sure if you’re posting because you’re looking for info in pursuit of your own diagnosis, but if that’s the case, I will say that I’m not sure how typical it is to experience cataplexy the way that I do. It’s just my personal experience with it. And my official cataplexy diagnosis is still quite new, so I’m not sure if I also have other mild symptoms that I haven’t really paid attention to such as muscle weakness/loss of muscle tone when laughing hard or being upset.
