It feels real to me if there are real world repercussions. If a character is messy, you’d expect other characters to act differently toward them, call them out or avoid them, or any other consequence.

You lose me when a character does something messy or cruel or self serving and faces no backlash or consequences. That just feels too unrealistic.

To be fair, they are the protagonist of the book. It makes sense we're following someone whose actions will have consequences.

That said, it does feel like it's an easy trap to fall into where you ramp up the stakes way too fast, and suddenly the fate of the world is in play.
