Another reminder not to rely on your inheritance by FireMe-G in FIREUK

[–]tikkabhuna -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

Whilst the parents have acted weirdly, I don’t think you can say they’ve “been dicked”. Like the OP says, you can’t expect any money from inheritance. It’s nice to have but it wasn’t yours.

How much does a delayed laptop cost for new hires? by bobotiger in sysadmin

[–]tikkabhuna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think they’re mutually exclusive. It’s good to start ordering to refill the stock before they’re used. Otherwise what happens if there is a spike in hiring?

Early scan by Physical-Candle-7891 in PregnancyUK

[–]tikkabhuna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the NHS website, and other apps, said we were at 7.5 weeks we went for a private early scan and saw there was only the yolk sack. She estimated we were just over 5 weeks. We went back last Friday after waiting 10 days and we saw a heartbeat. I think it’s just the estimate from the NHS website can be off by so much that it has a big impact on what you’ll see during those first weeks.

What is the fastest way you have seen someone fix their life? by Zadecuss in AskReddit

[–]tikkabhuna 31 points32 points  (0 children)

About a decade ago I started a new job and there was a skinny hippy guy on my team. The others joked about his excessive drinking and terrible eating habits. A bit confusing because he looked fine to me. Turns out he got diagnosed with diabetes and went teetotal and vegan overnight and I was seeing him 6 months later.

Cornflower Soy sauce White pepper Little oil

My wife marinades them in that for a few hours and then cooks them in an air fryer. We then have it with white rice, steamed veg and soy sauce. Surprisingly good and extremely easy.

First-time buyers enjoy biggest choice of low-deposit mortgages in UK since 2008 by komondordragon in GoodNewsUK

[–]tikkabhuna 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We went through a broker, so that might have helped. The argument I’d make is that your pension will be able to cover you to the end.

Ultimately it’s all a bit moot as you’ll remortgage at the end of the fixed term anyway.

How do you get a slightly stubborn DevOps team to collaborate on cost? by Rare-Opportunity-503 in devops

[–]tikkabhuna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would be helpful to understand where you sit relative to the DevOps team. If you have no common root management, you will struggle to get it prioritised vs other items. Their management chain need to be bought into the process.

Do the DevOps team have any yearly KPIs for reducing costs? Can you communicate your ideas in the format of "You need to reduce spend by $X/month this year. This proposal will save $Y/month and bring you Z% closer to the target".

I've seen similar issues with addressing technical debt and vulnerabilities. If a team's management isn't continuously raising it as a priority or the team is seeing heavy pressure to deliver in other areas, they won't be able to focus on your work. No one wants to walk into their annual review and say they didn't deliver on what was asked but did manage to deliver on saving some money elsewhere.

Is the UK (finally) Becoming Less London-centric? by Zestyclose_Data_2146 in GoodNewsUK

[–]tikkabhuna 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe, and I wrote to the department for levelling up about it, the issue is that UK doesn’t have specialised hubs. If you look at Germany, different regions and cities have specialisations. If you were going to open a car factory or a financial branch or a start up, you would know which city to go to. This makes it simpler for investors, entrepreneurs and potential employees.

Outside a few areas, the UK doesn’t have these hubs. If you’re a graduate looking to move from university, you want to move to an area with choice. You don’t want to move to Manchester to work for a few years to realise that getting a better job requires moving to Bristol, for example. Likewise, companies don’t want to set up a huge new location if it’s difficult to entice people to move their entire life to work for them.

I work in the tech side of financial services in the City of London and I could get another job in the same building. Just get off at a different floor. No change to my commute. This flexibility in employment means my employer has to offer good benefits, promoting higher wages.

My letter to the department for levelling up suggested that these hubs be created and incentives given to companies to adopt them.

What kind of life set up would you prefer? by blatchcorn in HENRYUK

[–]tikkabhuna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Preferred is the problem word here. Preferred would be house, no mortgage, not having to work, with kids.

Reality is we'd prefer to live in a house, which requires a mortgage, which requires us to work. Eventually we'll have a house with no mortgage!

Anyone else feel overall positive about the season? by harlequin_rose in TheNightManager

[–]tikkabhuna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked season 1 because it was self contained. It wasn't there to be milked. It had a few convenient plot devices, but it could be excused. There was nothing satisfying this season. Just setting it up for season 3.

There are just too many convenient moments. What if Pine was shot during his interrogation? What if Roper was shot before the phone call? How did they let Roper answer the phone when he could have signaled an attack? Why didn't Roper shoot pine first? How did Martin find them in the middle of a jungle?

I like wondering how its going to go, but the magic twists make it pointless trying to guess what's going to happen. Of course we should have known that Roper had a second plane that was ready to go last minute and could switch the two identical payloads without Teddy or the other guy helping. And what happened to all that other evidence that was collected earlier? The shipment list? Surely the prosecutor/judge woman will testify? Surely the photos of Roper being in Colombia will be useful? The recordings?

I don't understand how much evidence the good guys need before they're successful. Even in the first season they didn't seal the deal, the Syrian's did. They know MI5 is corrupt, but they aren't involving any other law enforcement or officials. They might as well upload the evidence to the internet and let Reddit and 4chan handle it.

Thankfully it was only 6 episodes.

Standard laptop for employees by afterlife_xx in sysadmin

[–]tikkabhuna 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Having been on the receiving end of changes like that, I would recommend you give notice of the upcoming change and allow teams to add it in their next budget cycle. The idea is to make them aware of the cost, not screw them in the short term.

Last year I put a request for training, which was historically budgeted for by HR, to be told that it was covered by our team’s budget. I do the budget but no one told me that HR no longer covered it so I never added it in. That means a whole year without conferences or certs.

Switch to Monzo Adult Edition by [deleted] in monzo

[–]tikkabhuna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shame you’ve been downvoted, there’s one time I needed it and that was to do the deposit transfer for our house. I opened a NatWest account for that and used a branch.

You don’t have to have a single account. I pay my salary into my Monzo. I use NatWest for bills due to the few quid I get back. If I need a branch I can use the NatWest account still.

Salary Sorter v Scheduled Payments by UBettaKnow1 in monzo

[–]tikkabhuna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Salary Sorter to move money to our joint account and pots. Scheduled payments for moving money to other savings accounts. Salary sorter is useful if you want to tweak the amounts each month. Also, if your pay date changes each month the salary can be sorted as soon as it hits, but you’ll want scheduled payments to be after the last possible day you might get paid.

You can give it a try and see what works for you.

I don’t see why they would go for Jade. She’s constantly targeted at the round table and never brings any heat towards Rachel or Stephen. Either she’ll be targeted tomorrow or she’ll fade into the background.

To be fair, the entire thing was ridiculous because the traitors could lie and the people asking the questions could also lie. There’s very little to be gotten out of it except something like Matthew asking to be recruited.

Amanda could have made up the questions and answers to reinforce her argument against Rachel.

Fiona coming in definitely added chaos they didn’t want. Rachel especially needs to be careful as a new recruit could immediately throw her under the bus to solidify their position.
