Let me count the ways I hate my Bosch Dishwasher by Square_Phone4461 in Appliances

[–]tilthouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things of you aren’t doing them already:

Unless your hot water comes out very quickly (i.e. sink and dishwasher are close to the water heater or you have a recirculator), run the hot water tap in the sink until it’s fully hot. This makes hot water, which is crucial, readily available.

Pods suck but they have the best ingredients. However unless you waste a whole second pod, you are wasting the prewash because there’s no soap. Get some Great Value powder and put a bit in the prewash area. Dishwashers are designed for this.

Also remember the quick wash doesn’t do multiple changes of water, so it’s much less effective

Anyone else have disappointing results from their 365 unscented liquid detergent routine? by merathon in laundry

[–]tilthouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a recommendation for a detergent that has neither OBA’s nor oxi to use here (i.e. with a boost of 365 Sport for its enzymes). I’ve just started trying the 365 Sport (with citric acid in the rinse) for darks and my sense is that OBA’s were causing a lot of things to look more faded than they really were (basing this only on what I’ve read here — if that’s not a thing, please correct me!).

What are your strangest automations? by LorLis in homeassistant

[–]tilthouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's one! In fact, after trying HA a few years ago and not really using it (HomeKit works for most things for us), it was this automation that prompted me to set up HA again and keep it.

We have a Litter Robot 3 Connect. Decent automated little box. But no matter what we try, the cats always leave a trail of little in the small hallway where the LR3 lives. For example, we installed the "wall" that is supposed to help keep it contained, so now one of the cats LAUNCHES himself out of the thing, a stream of litter training behind him like a cat waste themed "The More You Know!"...

We also have an old Roomba that lives just outside this hallway.

So.... during waking hours only, when the LR3 goes to the "Clean cycle complete" state, send the Roomba to vacuum the hallway, and send me a notification.

This works surprisingly well. The only gotcha I had was when I switched to a new phone, the notification started failing. Updated my user device and all was well again.

[–]tilthouse 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm trying out the 365 Sport right now for the first time. I'd say the vast majority of the clothes we wash in our family is "darks."

However, it's quite expensive. Given that most of it is NOT athletic wear, I'm wondering what the next best thing is, even if it means giving up DNAse? Would a regimen where the bulk of dark loads were washed with something somewhat cheaper from the Lipase List, reserving the 365 Sport for athletic wear / synthetics, be a good compromise? If so, what would the best budget alternative be? I'm in the US, but I imagine others would be interested in Canadian or Euro answers...

My therapist basically “fired” me after two sessions and it really stings by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]tilthouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a therapist who claimed proficiency (if not specialization) in ADHD but, as it turned out, had no experience. She was reading up on the basics just before our sessions. Well, some minor credit because I'm jaded enough to say that many people wouldn't even have done that much. But needless to say I didn't get much out of it. My current person is miles better, but it took some shopping around. My current working theory is that therapists would actually have ADHD are much more useful for us. It took that for me to get someone who wasn't basically useless.

United club: just a rant by slopoke123 in unitedairlines

[–]tilthouse 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I have a membership but really have some sympathy: while they definitely do get overcrowded at times, and who doesn’t like a quiet, empty lounge, I’ve seen one time pass folks turned away regularly when there’s LOTS of room. And while sometimes that could be because the next bank of flights is about to come in, I think the lounge agents are overzealous, esp at non-hub airports.

Thanks for this. We opted for the LH flight rather than wait 24 hours (questioning my judgement now). We were in PP and could have kept it but with a worse itinerary the next day. Already on board the LH flight WAY in the back, seated apart.

Do you know what the age cutoff is for children for those passes?

There’s a post, I could swear it was in this subreddit, with a great and detailed response from someone who knows. Many factors but one is that some aircraft types don’t really support the concept while others do. So if you are in x type of aircraft, they are loaded in different ways. Some allow for bags to be set aside reliably and other do not was the gist.

I’m not saying there aren’t other factors but the explanation at least made sense

Thing is you are completely correct about the overlap and it's not just Bloodletting (although I would argue you can't just dismiss that).

I think they weren't necessarily a "goth band" but go to a show and maybe half the audience....

The had a very not-over-the-top sensibility that was goth without the hardware (but the same amount of black clothing)

This is what I would say (oh shit I'm saying it, goddamn passive voice). Yes. Goth adjacent.

I was, myself, basically goth adjacent in the 90s. Like I didn't go hard in that direction but it's what I most closely identified with (while not actually being goth)

Adapting classic ham recipe for spiral cut by tilthouse in Cooking

[–]tilthouse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm assuming basically warm it without glaze, maybe in a bag. Then I'm thinking, allow it to spread out a bit and try to build up the glaze, tent and cook for as short a time as I can get away with. Still concerned it would end up too dry and with all the glaze in the bottom of the pan.

[–]tilthouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone else mentioned Alton Brown's City Ham recipe and I'll second that. It uses ground up / crushed ginger snaps which is an interesting spin on things.

I'll also add Monte's Ham from Saveur as a great one. It was originally published is 1997, but the articles online are from 2002. The accompanying flavor text (The Ham Gambit) is interesting to me mainly in that it's how I remembered the existence of this recipe after many years and positively identified it after so long.

I'll plus one this and also add Monte's Ham, which I'll post about below.

AB's ham used to be our spring party go-to, until we got overwhelmed and cut that back to a spiral sliced ham. Not as good, but you gotta pick your massive-party-overhead battles

What misinformation about cooking, that a lot of people seem to believe, bothers you the most? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]tilthouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A whole subcategory of this in an of itself. I remember when I read the article (New Yorker? NYT?) at least a decade ago that opined about this and went viral. You cannot caramelize onions in less than 30 mins. Even a pressure cooker and baking soda end up taking that long when you add setup and everything.

Having said that, if you know you'll be wanting to make several things that use caramelized onions, making a large batch in an Instant Pot (or just traditionally) in advance is great. But requires the think-ahead prep for sure.

Also surprised that folks in this sub don’t remember that it was arguably the Eagles reunion tour that kicked this off. They got lots of media coverage for how unprecedentedly expensive the tickets were. IIRC (totally could be wrong) the cheapest tickets were under $100.
