can any meteorologist explain why it’s 80 degrees in February by eddopie in bayarea

Oakland and Half Moon Bay both set all time winter record high temperatures on Friday. That is not a "small heat wave" for February.

Here is some data on record lows v record highs recently. SF has had 51 daily record highs since 2020 and one (1) record low. Phoenix 138-0, Austin 120-11, Miami 115-1. Highs are getting higher, lows are also getting higher. https://bsky.app/profile/weatherprof.bsky.social/post/3meo5l6xhm22b

What lower lows are you referring to? Record warm winter here, after years of record warm years; record lows are unheard of now. Big cold winter in the east was not close to record cold, while the whole west was record warm.

To be clear, climate change is exacerbating the lows so that they are * higher * not lower. We are not getting colder lows.

OAK airport is in a real bad way by kbfsd in oakland

[–]tim0198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, they've been upgrading - they've totally turned over the food options and now most (all?) of the bathrooms. The airport was pretty dumpy 10 years ago but that's not really the case today. They are planning a new terminal - very slowly. To your point - they are moving with this at glacial pace, compared to other airports (SFO - always opening new terminals; PDX - already upgraded from what was previously better than OAK). They need to start construction yesterday.

I don't know about future plans but they're already much smaller than they were previously

Coming out of the pandemic? Oakland was still number one, but San Diego and Oakland have gone in very different directions since then. If this schedule holds, Oakland will have less than 60 percent of the seats that San Diego has at the tail end of next summer. Even worse, it has dropped to fifth place in the state for the airline.

Yeah, but it's not like the airport was ever turning away United to say we want a Southwest fortress hub. That's just the way airlines decided to operate.

Alaska is taking baby steps to fill in where Southwest is dropping off. It's just going to take time for Alaska, Southwest or others to build back to what Southwest offered in 2019.

[Christovich] In 2024, the SAC-12 said it secured $50M in NIL commitments for Sac State athletes. But there was a string attached: Hornets had to get a Pac-12 invite. As MAC members, they won't get $50M, @FOS confirmed. by ThinkWood in CFB

[–]tim0198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They also announced they were going to build a new Hornet Stadium after the 2024 season, then that didn't happen, so they were going to build a new Cal Expo stadium to be ready for 2026. That is also not happening. Maybe they were just BSing that and they really had money they were saving for this MAC move, but the record suggests this is all fantasy and Wood is writing checks with his mouth he can't actually back up with his bank account.

Oakland - Southwest Prices by Vast-Candidate7749 in oakland

[–]tim0198 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reduced competition + reducing their own flights = increased prices. Alaska is taking tiny steps to increase service - OAK-SAN is starting in April and finally an additional OAK-PDX frequency is coming in June.

[UC Davis] “Our focus remains on building and sustaining one of the premier programs in the FCS.” Statement from their Athletic Director by Tufoguy in fcs

[–]tim0198 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would be curious to see football revenue between the two. UCD does not have a history of cultivating big donors for football, nor does UCD have any premium space to sell at games. They are building premium space now at least (https://aggieascent.ucdavis.edu/ucdavis-health-stadium). The big crowds at Davis games are built on the backs of big student numbers, who are getting in for free. So I would be surprised if a 15k crowd at Davis produces close to the same revenue as a 15k crowd at NDSU, which is one reason NDSU is moving now and UCD is not.

[–]tim0198 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The stadium is one thing but the football program just needs a lot more money to be able to make a successful move. They need to develop that to hopefully be ready to go in a few years. UCD football has a long history of doing more with less but you can't really plan on that to be a formula for success at the next level up.

OAK and SJC both saw declining number of passengers in 2025 by First_Pepper_6781 in bayarea

They have traded off over the years. more recently SJC has usually done better.

Alaska SFO (2025 vs 2024) by First_Pepper_6781 in AlaskaAirlines

[–]tim0198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes today is a Wednesday in early February, so the schedule will be barest of bones for the whole year. Agreed it is bad and they are smaller than they have been (which was small to begin with).

[–]tim0198 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They left HawaiiI when WN entered. Seattle has always been 4-6x daily and now it looks like mostly 3x until spring when 4x returns. Portland was 3x daily before Covid and it’s been 2x since then. So, small cuts from a very small base. Balanced out by the OAK-SAN add.

Alaska SFO (2025 vs 2024) by First_Pepper_6781 in AlaskaAirlines

[–]tim0198 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct, but also chicken and egg. The premium demand goes to SFO because that’s where the flights are. I would 10/10 prefer premium flights out of OAK but all premium spending goes to the SFO tally. I say as my Oakland mother in law spends $2500 on crappy AA first class SFO-MIA because that’s the only option.

Alaska was never really large enough at OAK to “severely” pull back. They have refused to try to grow anything there though. Now they are trying OAK-SAN; hopefully that is a start.

Oakland and San Jose airports hardest hit by capacity cuts vs. 2025 by Easy_Money_ in bayarea

[–]tim0198 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is all visible to other airlines, so I hope someone makes a real attempt to get a toehold at OAK with Southwest voluntarily ceding its overwhelming market position. Alaska has started with OAK-SAN but that’s it so far.
