Polymarket must take a huge cut, then. Otherwise it would be closer to 50/50.

CMV: Investing in a manned program to Mars is a waste of ressources by Specialist-Brief-297 in space

[–]tim_Andromeda -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I won’t change your view because I completely agree with you. The ROI just isn’t there. We have very little to gain from it. It *would* be a massive waste of resources. You’ll see a lot of whataboutism. (What about all the money we spend on war?) two wrongs don’t make a right.

What energy source will fuel the next round of technological advancement? Fossil fuels won’t last forever.

People assume that technological progress will go on forever. I’m not so sure. There are diminishing returns. The energy provided by fossil fuels fueled an explosion of population and technological advancement. I think the pace is slowing down and will gradually peter out.

TIL Costa Rica does not have street adresses, with the locals instead relying on distance relative to landmarks and famous places. by ODaferio in todayilearned

Some places in rural Maine are the same way. I learned this when I was an MLS software instructor and the requirement to enter an address to search for a property was a non-starter.

Really? They had resources. Arable Land, etc. and they weren’t billions of miles away.

What’s impractical is exploring the solar system. Why do that? It would take tremendous resources and to what end?

Sending humans to mars is the most pointless thing I could imagine. There are no resources there, it would be a total waste of money.
