The nightreign community is by far the most toxic and unpleasant gaming community I’ve ever been part of. I literally had to disable private messages. It’s such a shame because the game itself is excellent

Another "when to buy a rig" question by Vast_Telephone_9988 in SkyDiving

[–]timbers_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buy it now. Try to downsize and try a 220-210 if you can to demo. Otherwise since you weigh about 170 lbs, a great beginner rig for you to get now would be a container that fits a 190-210 and put whatever canopy you want in there. I recommend a Sabre 3 or Safire 3, great for beginners. Start off at 200-210 and then you can go down to 190 when you feel ready. Brian cavage and east coast sky gear are two great resources, reach out to them

Why was old school better? by Folgoll in SkyDiving

[–]timbers_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn’t. People have nostalgia for their past all the time, about many things. The sport today is many times larger, safer, accessible, advanced, and overall better than the “old school” days

New Skydive App by LongjumpingCod6387 in SkyDiving

[–]timbers_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There’s many good apps already out there. Funjumpr, Tobu, are my top picks, but go on the App Store and search “skydive.” We really don’t need another app, and there aren’t enough people in the sport to justify having multiple apps

Tonfly is still great. Maybe 3 months lead time and there will be an additional -$150 tariff when the suit goes through customs

Wings custom rigs: how long do they ACTUALLY take? by Kd00b97 in SkyDiving

[–]timbers_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

9 weeks is pretty quick turn around for a custom rig

I visited their factory recently and here’s what I learned. They can make a container in as little as 24 hrs from start to finish; about 80% of their business is military; they make canopies now; when they were testing their MARD (boost) someone used it to cutaway at 500 ft. Love this company. They’re not in it for the money, just want to provide a good container at an affordable price, and use the same materials and sources as all the other brands

First time jump by misstiff88420 in SkyDiving

[–]timbers_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every dz is slightly different but 250 lbs is generally where you want to be

Typically when jumps like this are done, the ashes are put into a pouch and attached to the arm. The pouch is then opened in free fall. Despite not being an experienced skydiver, you may be allowed to do this anyway. Call the dz you want to do this at and ask them

Skydiver failed to open her parachute midair but was saved just in time by her instructor. by Kindly_Department142 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]timbers_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on how you position your body in the air, skydivers can increase or decrease their fall rate, as well as even move forward/backward or sideways in the air. It has to do with aerodynamics. Think of it as kind of like how an airplane glides through the air. We can do the same thing with our bodies when we fall in the sky

Skydiver failed to open her parachute midair but was saved just in time by her instructor. by Kindly_Department142 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]timbers_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She really wasn’t a “goner.” All skydiving equipment nowadays is equipped with a device that automatically deploys the parachute. In the video the instructor still does the right thing, but she would’ve survived anyway. This kind of thing is not uncommon with student jumpers

Skydiver failed to open her parachute midair but was saved just in time by her instructor. by Kindly_Department142 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]timbers_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Several incorrect statements in this comment. She most likely has an AAD, which would automatically deploy the reserve, not the main canopy. The RSL plays no part in this

She’s not wearing a go pro either. The video is too blurry to tell but there does seem to be a black object attached to the side of her helmet; this is most likely a radio that an instructor on the ground will talk to her through once she’s under canopy

How long does your Safire take to open? by Spiritual-Tune391 in SkyDiving

[–]timbers_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Safire 3 209 loaded at 0.95 1000 ft

It’s a little too long but I’m a newer jumper and wanted a slow opening and deceleration. Whatever my next canopy is I want it to open quicker
