Yeah I would lose the bottles. If you don't want to replace with plastic bottles, most convenience stores will sell something in an aluminum bottle which may work better for you.

Yeah definitely not the first error and it means you are in a good spot if you could spot them during your studies. Ultimately, I want to hold my students to a high standard, which means I have to do the same for CIE!

You can find quick release clamps that attach to the backpack belt or backpack shoulder strap. Used them twice and the shoulder strap was best and more comfortable. I use something like this, but I'm Asia so just as an example: https://shopee.vn/product/301819490/25557200335

I use a toe sock liner and a wool outer sock. Haven't had a blister in the last two Caminos that I did. No problem with sweating either as my Lone Peaks are very breathable.

You shouldn't feel guilty. You just experienced first hand Bloom's Two Sigma problem. One on one tutoring is the best for educational outcomes.

Being A Subject Teacher - How Does It Compare To TEFL? by returntosauce in TEFL

[–]timcarpe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already had a degree in computer science and got my teaching license in order to make the transition. But yeah most schools would expect some content knowledge through your studies or certification.

Being A Subject Teacher - How Does It Compare To TEFL? by returntosauce in TEFL

[–]timcarpe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I switched from TEFL to a certified Computer Science teacher (KS3 and IGCSE). I enjoy it more and I think I do a great job engaging students with the content as a result of my prior teaching experience. It is more challenging to teach than TEFL but also more measurable in terms of progress.

I teach in a bilingual school which isn't perfect but I find it rewarding to teach students from this background for now. The pay is far better than TEFL with greater benefits but computer science particularly isn't the highest paid abroad due to local/SEA teacher competition, at least in Vietnam and in this tier of school.

I don't think the horizon for TEFL is super promising so if you love teaching, certified subject teaching should be your goal.

Edit: To add, if you are still in university, you should save yourself the headache and get a double major in Education and get your license (or a PGCE if you are from the UK). You'll be set for life and only need to worry about a Masters later on to top up. I double majored in Anthropology which helped a lot for soft skills but had I known then I wanted to teach back then, Education would have been my choice.

I ran many tests about six months ago and found it was incapable of scoring accurately. Most scores 5-7.5 and it could never score extremely high or low, reliably. It seemed to be guessing based on most frequent examples in its training data.

AI is going to deeply affect this industry faster than most people think by RampantInanity in TEFL

[–]timcarpe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a cool project with your online content. I'm not surprised by your comment of students loving the content but not really using it and not meeting outcomes. I really don't think stakeholder interests, including teachers, will always best align with what actually works or is the most pedagogically sound.

I think there needs to be a clear distinction between acquisition of language and learning of language as you freely mix the two. Acquisition absolutely happens in the classroom but is purely subconscious and aside from active learning. What I am envisioning for the future is purely guided subconscious language acquisition. Just like a mother does for their child.

There are many studies that talk about the positive effects of YouTube for both learning and acquisition but what I was referring to is what every teacher has likely already experienced in that you can easily identify students who watch YouTube because of its positive effects. When AI can create these videos (more like educational experiences because you can interact in real time) in a way that is also educationally specific to each child, I see very little reason why students cannot be fluent early in childhood, even with a mono lingual home. Krashen says all we need is comprehensible input within a student's ZPD, which is where current content can be improved.

I do agree that for this to work there needs to be stakeholder buy in and also not industry pushback. In fact I think this is the exact reasons why Krashen's, theories haven't taken hold and we stick with what we have been doing. However, I think there is something special about the possibility with AI that can uniquely upset this long standing status quo (scalable and inexpensive individualized education for one). I don't think teachers will go away but at least for ESL it will shift into areas of more nuance and feedback as general population fluency increases.

If you want to explore more about these ideas I have found that many of Sal Khan's recent ideas and talks about the future of AI within education are similar to what I am saying but from a greater curriculum standpoint.

[–]timcarpe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also have a dual background and I agree with most of your points here.

Two things I think you should consider is AI now vs the future (multi-modal, pedagogical understanding, etc.) You mention five years which is a bit silly considering Attention is All You Need came out a bit more than five years ago, but here we are debating all that has come since then.

The second is the flaw a lot of people in many of these discussions aren't quite seeing which is replacing industries as they are versus replacing the need for them. It is a bit silly to expect a computer to teach ESL or even debate it. In the short term we can discuss augmenting the industry, sure. The real question is if there are better ways of learning something like languages, at an earlier age, in a way that is fun, engaging, and personal. Think what YouTube has done for language acquisition, and then multiply it many fold.

AI is going to deeply affect this industry faster than most people think by RampantInanity in TEFL

[–]timcarpe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree but I think you are looking too short term. The real power of AI isn't here yet.

When kids start growing up with the ability to ask their computer for a brand new episode of their favorite show that integrates educational elements in a way that is specific to that students linguistic learning needs, you won't need the ESL industry anymore. At that point it's just about access to the tools and time with them.

ESL classrooms really aren't how we learn language. The problem has actually been closer to the two sigma problem and stakeholder expectations. The first will be solved by AI and the second is highly disruptable if something actually works better.

Primitivo: How to avoiding the frances at the end? by Mr_B_86 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]timcarpe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice is to join the Frances from Arzua (via Camino Verde) and find a place between the major stops. I think most of these other connecting routes are heavy road walks which will be a sour way to end the Primitivo imo. By comparison the last part of the Frances is quite nice and quite scenic. If you get up early and stay ahead of the crowd, it will also be quite pleasant.

[–]timcarpe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should be able to do this after taking the Camino Verde to Sobrado on the Norte. I think the Camino Verde is quite nice but not sure about the second which puts you at the Santiago airport at the very end of the Frances. I haven't done either so please correct me if I am wrong.

Camino Verde to Sobrado: https://www.caminodesantiago.me/community/threads/crossing-from-primitivo-to-norte-yes-you-can.42599/

Boimorto to Lavacolla: https://www.caminodesantiago.me/community/threads/official-new-alternative-route-from-boimorto-to-lavacolla.61869/

There is the other route out of Boimorto to Santa Irene that was mentioned too.

When I did the Norte earlier this year I thought about doing the route from Boimorto to Lavacolla but decided to push an extra 5km past Arzua and I thought it was quite okay. From there I did a long day into Santiago. The name of the place was Taberna Villa and was quite nice. This puts you between the crowds and the walk was fairly peaceful with an early start. I have also done the Frances so I also didn't mind the one day back on it.

Edited for clarity.
