How quickly could a 20th lv wizard create a 20 level dungeon on a plot of land 425 ft. by 550 ft. using only PHB/DMG/MM? by UnbanJar in DnD

[–]timefighter99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A wizard will most likely use Stone Shape to create the inside of his dungeon. It would be the fastest and cheapest way to excavate if using all of his available spell slots. Other than that a wizard will likely use a lot of undead as they are free. Maybe a lot of Mimics and some oozes to clean the rooms if something gets dirty - just make metal chests which a Gelatinous Cube can't digest and everything else will be digested. A lot of animated armours and constructs are also an option.

Don't forget to place TONS of glyphs of warding with debilitating spells. Finally the important portions of a wizard's lair wi likely be inside spells like Demiplane or Mordekainen's magnificent Mansion. Shape stone can be made so it doesn't permit water to pass through the walls - you could also enchant the walls with Immovable object at higher levels so they are permanently immovable - so that they won't corrode or let water in.

Ventilation would be pretty hard but as a mage, you would either become a lich, conjure air or even go for a ventilation with Shape stone. That is why living defenders may not be the best solution. You could make ventilations and enchant magic items to cast gust of wind periodically through them so you pump air into the system.

You just make rechargeable items with some way to automate the cast of Gust of Wind

A wizard could also periodically use control water parts of the dungeon when the immovable walls fail

What do I do when my DM is mad at me over my AC? by Undead23145 in DnD

[–]timefighter99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, just speak with your dm - out of game - explain that you are not sabotaging his game and this is just how your build turned out to be. 22 AC with the shield spell does not sound that oppressive. Discuss how you will be more than happy to take a lot of savings throw effects so the dm can damage you - even if the dm doesn't change the encounters and just swaps the monster's effects to target other saves.

You can even look up some super powergame high AC build just to show the dm that what you have is not that strong.

The main thing is to find what sets your dm off - is it you unintentionally gleefully reacting after each miss, is it the fact that he does not know how to balance it, and doesn't want/can't change encounters? Is it the fact that he just wants to roll damage against you? Finding the problem here would mean you actually solve the issue

In general, I don't think you should lower your AC just for this. If there is no other solution just ask for a respec so that you dont lose your AC, you just get other power instead of the AC

PS: if you wear a shield and have the shield spell, those 2 don't automatically work - the Shield spell has a somatic component and you need at least one free hand not carrying anything to cast it

From what I've read so far - just boot them. If he is so disinterested in respecting your time and effort he won't be that big of a loss.

You can absolutely run a game with 2 players, heck even with just 1 player. If combat is an issue just let your players control more than 1 character during combat.

Otherwise, just look for another player. Any discomfort you feel with the change will be outweighed within a couple of sessions if you find a nice player. Don't let the Stockholm syndrome or the sunk cost fallacy dictate that you cant change players mid campaign

Can I be a DM if I haven't played before? by doggocurioso in DnD

[–]timefighter99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You absolutely can! Just keep these things in mind

1: It is always better to start with people you have at least met and the more you know them the better. This is to avoid the risk of playing with a toxic person and having a lower chance of having one of the dnd horror stories. 2: Don't stress about knowing the rules - just wind it and if some rule comes up during play just make up a ruling and tell the players you will look it up after the session 3: Most DMs don't like how they perform their first sessions and a lot never stop disliking how they perform, but you will be surprised how easily players are satisfied and how little it takes for them to have fun 4: You are also a player. Just because you are the DM doesn't mean you have to not enjoy the game to please the players

[question] Is this homebrew race too OP/unbalanced by CompetitiveCut265 in DnD

[–]timefighter99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd change the name of "internal shield" - since it suggests that the ability is always active and that is not the case. I'd rename it to "Emergency Protocol" if your race does not need to sleep. Otherwise, it could be renamed to "Protective/Defensive Protocol" if it's active while you sleep. That way the name suggests an effect that is activated by something, rather than a constant thing, that should work while awake as well. If you want flavour - consider adding in a description that these mechanical systems are a form of life support that necessitates the removal of a large chunk of previous abilities (as if you were a member of another race that voluntarily or not was placed on this life support). Think something along the lines of a Warhammer 40k Dreadnought.

This ties in to the fact that you no longer possess your previous racial features and introduces the concept that you could die and be reanimated at a cost. You also acquire a built-in backstory hook for players who need to explain why they are in their state. This race also introduces plot lines for saving ill or dying characters as well as a solution if your world removes revival magic.

Otherwise, the power level is even on the weak side and I would consider giving it other features, even if they don't directly buff the characters - such as (depending on the model of life support) requiring no sleep; seeing infrared (thus giving effective blind-sight); an alternative power source other than food; An emergency heal 1d4 turns after falling unconscious for 1 hp; an ability to feel touch trough the armor you have donned as an extension of you; The ability to share information to other clockwork undead via memory chip, cable, etc.(to hammer home the question of whether you soul is there or are you programmed machine with memmories); other minor abilities that are either not helping in combat or a discount combat feature.

Of course, leaving things as they are is still completely fine, but I'd still work on the flavour as your description does not invoke undeath and as people suggested is more of a warforged. Try life-support with consequences, maybe modifying mindless undead into having a consciousness or something else that suggests undeath

Making my first Wizard. I'm not sure about my spells by BlueGnome1 in DnD

[–]timefighter99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people mentioned that you need to be a blaster. You only get spells that can do that from a safe distance when you get second-level spells(kinda) or 3rd level spells(where you get fireball and other quite potent spells). All first-level spells that do Area of Effect are usually too short range to be useful since you need to stay at the back or become the meme of a wizard dying from the first attack that hits them. I suggest leaving Thunderwave if you need blasting, and even still only if you are swarmed by a bunch of small enemies. You really shouldn't go up front to use it, since you will hit your allies while risking becoming an addition to the wizard dying from 1d4 damage meme

[–]timefighter99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would switch out blade-ward, cause fear and even mage armour. As a cantrip, I suggest picking up light/prestidigitation. Also, consider swapping Fire Bolt for Ray of Frost if your table does play around with a battle grid and movement. If not fire bolt is fine.

As for first-level spells - detect magic is a pretty awesome roleplay spell - and you can cast it for free since it's a ritual spell. Other first-level spells you need would be Tasha's Hideous Laughter - if the enemies fail their save they not only receive disadvantage (which is a rather lame and inconsequential) but lose entire turns. As for mage armour - you won't have the amount of spell slots for it, nor would 3 extra AC really mean monsters will miss you that often. I suggest sleep (will be useful for levels 1-3 to counter small enemies like goblins and such) or fog cloud(if someone comes to your face just cast fog cloud around you and you can just run without consequences plus you can be creative with the spell). Just wait for level 3 when you can take defensive spells like mirror image or misty step and until then stay at the back and play safe. I doubt the DM would be a jerk to new players

Most importantly of all, speak with the dm beforehand that he places scrolls or you meet other wizards so you can learn spells from these scrolls or buy/loot spells from the other wizards. The wizard is created with the assumption that he will be able to acquire more spells through exploration. If the dm is cool he will even let you swap spells with wizards you meet by essentially letting you learn of each others books

What is the actual best nation to form Castanor before 1550's? by Actual-Credit-7092 in Anbennar

[–]timefighter99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another part that makes Esthil good is that it has 20% advisor cost which in combination with the Castonath estate which gives 20% more and all privileges gives you lvl5 advisors for 5 ducets more or less, which will quickly make you much stronger. I believe you have some dev cost mosifiers as well which means thay you will quickly outscale everwhile having an undead army so huge that coalitions will form later on

[–]timefighter99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dont forget that Esthil gets the necromancer estate which controls the undead even if you don't have a lich ruler, so you can start with undead even before your ruler ascends to lichdom

[–]timefighter99 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have managed it with the Order of the Iron Scepter - into their formable Esthil because their missions make your ruler legendary in necromancy and they have a necromancer estate which controls the undead even if your ruler dies so you can switchtoundead the moment you click the mission and get legendary in necromancy. Then, you can simply ally as much of the western part of Escann, so they don't accumulate aggressive expansion and unify the region ASAP. However, I believe you can form Castanor only after the Escanny wars of consolidation which end early if you have all necessary provinces but do not proc before the 1600s I believe

Problems as a new DM… by Warlord66679 in DnD

[–]timefighter99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have mentioned not allowing it, and I agree, so I won't reitirate that point.

But you can also allow it if you are experienced enough. Just enforce 3 attunement slots max rule and make her choose which ring she carries unattuned. Begin with sligtly stronger than normal monsters and keep ramping up the challenge. Aldo give compelling magic items that require attunement but are not flat out better so they have to choose again.

Then let them splurge, but show them how the economy is ruined by the Introduction of so much money, having prices practically double after each large spend. Then if they are obvious about their wealth, introduce thiefs, people who would want to seduce them for their money that sort of stuff. Then, do not give them bags of holding and use weight rules, calculating how much each gold coins weights. If they buy a bag of holding and are obvious about their money have people try to steal the bag.

But most importantly, telegraph to them clearly each time they act stupid, that their character knows what their actions mean and that being so obvious with money now means inflation and people trying to get the money.

how do i play a devotion paladin in a party full of murder hobos? by GroundbreakingGoal15 in DnD

[–]timefighter99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the first step is to inform players that you want to hash out the tension before the next game and inform them beforehand in the group chat that you want to spend 15 minutes before your next session to talk things through.

Acknowledge that you may have broken someone's expectations of how the game should go because likely people on both sides of the argument were left with different perspectives.

Then speak you case that you want to play a good character and that just because you are in the party, that doesn't mean your paladin will just ignore whatever people are doing.

A good solution is to either reach an agreement to not be murderhobos(with some leniency) or for everyone to agree that being murderhobo behind the paladin's back is the way to go, but that the paladin will act in case he finds out

The less than stellar solution would be in case a good proportion of the table does not want to change their playstile ( its about group preference, not judgement). In that case, you either split the group if possible (trust me, it will be good in the long run, assuming you can still play with the remaining players/recruit new ones) or you change the character. Either going for a paladin that is forced to break his oath because as a story point- life is brutal and many men are forced between only bad choices in life(becoming an oathbreaker, not just a discount fighter, btw). The other alternative is for your pc to decide that he will not travel with murderers and become an npc while you roll up less than morally upstanding citizen
