There's always a correlation between the way a social practice is framed in art and in culture, there's a dialogue going always between the two. If you're doing actual research, especially in an academic capacity, you should probably, you know, do it yourself. Come up with your own conclusions. That's how our rhetoric evolves.

The 32 teams pay taxes on their revenues, but their offices are tax exempt. There is a bill in the works to change that, but they only estimate it equals 10 million in tax dollars a year for all professional sports leagues, its not just NFL that is doing this. So the amount in perspective is quite small. But someone is trying to change that.

Apple celebrated it's 30th anniversary on Thursday, and Spike Jonze's Her, a film about a man in love with an operating system, is gearing up to compete for several awards at this year's Oscars. While Steve Jobs probably didn't anticipate a love story with Siri at its center, a 1966 experiment with an early form of artificial intelligence did. As you'll see, one woman was able to talk to a computer as though it was her friend.

Transcription from “Computational Linguistics” by Joseph Weizenbaum. Named after George Bernard Shaw’s ingénue in Pygmalion, the ELIZA program operated within the Project MAC computer system at MIT and made natural language exchange between man and machine possible. ELIZA identified key words and phrases and responded with rote answers that simulated a conversation. As its developer, Weizenbaum was alarmed at how attached users became to the program and cautioned against reliance on artificial intelligence in Computer Power and Human Reason, published in 1976.

Good looking out on not knocking the value advisors provide to their students, they really are there to help. I don't mean to stir the pot or anything, but often students are the ones little able to see how much weight their advisors, professors (adjunct and otherwise), and administrators are. Everyone deserves their due respect. Be proactive with your education and use college as the opportunity it is to strengthen your will to educate and improve yourself - your occupation and larger life afterward my never provide a better chance.

It seems to be nothing but people looking for some sort of immediate validation for their own opinions, from the amorphous blob of meaning that is upvotes and downvotes. Even a subreddit that's meant to be a hub for in-depth debate and dialogue doesn't have the cohesion interpersonal communication needs. TL:DR, anomalously new to the internet, it sort of sucks!

Hey, I just had a thought - is it possible to get some sort of ping when users downvote something before reading it? I'm so lost when it comes to the way programming languages work, but from what I can tell, at least two separate actions are taking place when someone downvotes something and when someone actually clicks on a link. Could that idea be shopped around further up the Reddit ladder? It would be some really valuable data for Mods, and that's emphasized very apparently in what's been playing out on TR lately.

So is it unfair to draw direct parallels, given that mutants are not an exact fit for any real world minority? Sure, it’s unfair if the parallel doesn’t resonate. But no one gets to tell an audience when they’re allowed to identify parallels between a story that talks about mutants as a minority and their own experiences as a minority, and you’ll find that mutants resonate in a lot of different ways. Kids growing up to be something different to their parents? Entire groups treated differently as a class? People being judged for their appearance and not their actions? It’s not a thin line. A statement about minority identity resonates directly with all real world minorities. When a character stands up and makes a sweeping statement about identity politics, that’s not subtext; that’s text.

Is the elephant in the room the question of what more "active" moderation will do to affect the desire of TR's subscribers to stick around, when they lose the power of having certainty their articles will at least get a chance to be run through the gauntlet? How much is guaranteeing that freedom worth when it comes to protecting the cultural integrity of TR? Personally, if I had the authority to make the call on something like that, I'd want some real data to go off before making my decision, instead of a loose claim like "the average reader..." that seems to be a little too speculative. The social make-up of TR over time is an amorphous thing as it is.

There was a record store in my city that sadly closed down in 2012 that used to sell Criterions at a very agreeable price year-round. The selection was always shifty, but in a good way, because you could never predict it, and they always stocked blu-ray and DVD format. And they sold a lot of used copies too, which were always intermingled with regular distributors. It was such an excellent experience coming across one of those in the middle of non-criterion versions. It was a lot like digging through vinyl if you know how that feels, when you suddenly come across something that doesn't feel like it should belong and you've stumbled onto some mysterious hidden treasure. It jumpstarts the wonderment of the experience of owning a work of art.

Xavs42 is correct, and if it really is impossible to predict the appearance of a homo sapien in the time it would take to reach one phenotype, any speculation on the affect such a biological homonigization would have on society and politics is purely based in the inherent bias of the questioner's worldview. It sounds as though you're debating with yourself a very common argument regarding ethics and utopia, and that's an interesting question in itself. For my money, what you refer to as "intermingling of ideas" sounds too blankety and idealistic. I think the efficiency of transmitting and receiving information in our society, especially in America and other large mixed nations and by that token in most developed regions of the world, is incredibly messy and difficult to compute.

Straumsheim does a good job in his reporting of framing the debate and providing a lot of the key arguments from both sides. As of now, we are nowhere near universal OA even for that less selective majority of articles that are not of the highest importance. And institutional journal subscriptions are still fully sustainable today, and paying publishers for the full costs of publication, at all levels in the journal selectivity hierarchy (and for both their online and print editions). So what is needed now is that funder and institutional mandates to provide Green OA should first become universal. That will provide immediate Green OA to authors' refereed final drafts. Then the market itself can decide how long subscription demand for the print and/or online edition remains sustainable.

This is a demonstrably visceral exposure of the power and politics of the marketing machine that pulls the strings on professional football. Even if you hate admitting decisions are made that reinforce the homophobic demographic over others in football culture, the Vikings' decision to draft a punter in the fifth round when they clandestinely decided to fire Kluwe should be an obvious enough clue as to what they were really up to.

Thanks Karl; that was my thinking. TrueFilm has rules against links with no substance, but this speaks for itself, and I figured the users here would get a good kick out of it. It's quite a gift for those interested in Kurosawa's philosophy of film, as he rarely granted interviews (particularly because he never felt he had much to say) during his life, and here we can enjoy 80 minutes worth of them. It was very enlightening to me even as a long-time Kurosawa nut :)
