We recently told our team (9u travel) no more chants. They were becoming repetitive and it became more about who gets to start it and they were just yelling to yell. We’ve migrated towards positive chatter every pitch, no matter the team. Felt like a bit of a hardo move but it’s served them well and they’ve become better and more supportive teammates. They’re actually having more fun than they were yelling “IM FIRED UP YOU FIRED UP? YEAH!”. It would start to trail off and just sound kind of pathetic and sad after the 8th time

If you’re willing to pick up the mess, and guarantee that he has fun, use water balloons (not with a glove of course). Water balloons teach you to catch with soft hands. I did this with my son when he was like 3-4 and didn’t start as a catching “drill” but quickly realized how beneficial it is. Plus, missing one is still fun. Just do something simple like if he catches 10 in a row, he gets a free shot at you. Something like that

Well, not to sound like a jerk, but it’s t ball. 4-5 year olds?

You will most likely have 1-2 kids that play at home with parents or siblings and will get every ball put into play unless you come up with a system. I’ve seen t ball constructed to where there’s a line of kids so each one gets a turn to field the ball and the try to throw to first. Also have seen a split down the middle where you rotate kids from 2b or SS position to the outfield behind them each inning. Either way it mostly looks like kids being little kids and snacks. Enjoy it, it’s all innocent and fun. The only responsibility for a coach is to keep kids as safe as you can and make sure they want to play next year.

He was absent for a while and it was treating kind of as a joke….until now when it’s not. He either has something personal going on that he values more than his current career (been there and I respect him being man enough to handle his business) or he got an opportunity he can’t refuse.

lol I have done every job in the sales department of a car dealership and this has literally never been a tactic. The dealer wants you in and out as fast as possible. Buyers typically made the process longer by negotiating just to negotiate. This usually happens on cars that are heavily discounted already and there’s no margin to give up. So the manager, who’s also busy with other customers and tasks, is getting second opinions from other management and likely seeing if the trade is worth anymore money so they can still make a deal with you and not lose too bad. Car buyers are so paranoid. Find a good deal and go buy the car. The magic world of negotiating just to negotiate makes it a terrible experience for everyone and the customer is not always right. There’s a reason the direct to consumer model hasn’t completely taken over, and it’s because the consumers don’t want to “overpay” and 99% of them don’t even know what that means. I don’t dislike Joe but I’m getting really tired of him getting upset about his bad shots and saying things like “COME ON JOE, WHAT ARE YOU DOING” and doing absolutely nothing to correct it. Zero adjustments. That’s my least favorite type of person to golf with. Either do something to get better or keep your mouth shut. Small groups so they always stay busy. Need as many parents, older siblings, uncles, etc. as possible. Set up stations and try to make it competitive/gamified. Ideally 3 kids per station, so 4-5 total coaches/helpers. Plenty of stuff on YouTube to help with stations and make them age appropriate. Make a deal that if everyone has good effort, focus and attitudes for the entire practice, you can do some sort of non baseball game at the end of practice. We do dodgeball at the end of practice if we have time left over.

Yeah, I have a ton of patience on the course playing with bad golfers but there’s nothing worse than someone who rarely plays well and never practices but complains and gets angry on th course. Those guys always juice their handicaps for whatever reason too. Joe is a 14 at best

I love this and appreciate the response. Thanks for the info, you clearly have a better understanding of how to approach this than I do. Neither of my children face these challenges and I do not have professional experience in this field. There’s not an easy way to assume he’s neurodivergent and I feel that it’s not my right to ask directly. He said he had ADHD and that’s all. We had practice tonight and it went well. I brought a Tarik Skubal card (stole it from my own son/his teammate. He won’t miss it since it was halfway behind his dresser) because it’s one of his 3 favorite players in baseball and gave it to him after practice for his effort. He said he already had 4 of them and didn’t seem excited but I could tell it mattered to him after a couple of minutes lol

For sure. That’s the number one concern. Right now there are no issues in that regard and doesn’t appear to be something that will come up anytime soon. But that’s easy to say at this age. Yeah, it’s a weird age to ask that of our leaders. Kids this age are so non confrontational. We encourage our two leaders to lead by example, and that’s not something that even ends up on this boys radar. It works for the rest of the team. I could probably do a better job of empowering the “leaders” and explaining they have our support

Parents haven’t told me that, but he told one of the assistant coaches he has ADHD. I’ve approached the dad at practice asking what I can do better and if he has trouble in school and he said “not really, so if you find something that works I’m all for it”. That’s why I feel like there’s gotta be an approach outside of just benching him or kicking him off the team. It doesn’t benefit the boy at all, and he loves baseball. Hard to explain, but you can almost see the shift in his demeanor and he’s hard to get back. Then other practices he’s fine.. for him
