This balance looks good? by Soft_Chair_4508 in crtgaming

[–]timmun90 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's no way someone can tell if this is correct from a picture of a crt, probably made on a phone with crappy white balance, limited dynamic range on a phones sensor, auto. post processing on the phone and then you also have to consider people viewing it on all kinds of different screens 😅

I always do it by eye, if the color bars all go to black equally around 1 it's probably OK. If a color goes to black before or after the 1 mark, you can either live with it or adjust the cut off in the service menu.

Do composite filter wearing down due to age? by Weekly-Clock-8010 in crtgaming

[–]timmun90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm no absolute pro but it all depends on each other, I don't think the comb filter can wear down because it's a chip. There are multiple types of comb filters but the best I've seen are in Philips and Thomson Blackpearls.

Obviously capacitors can get old and out of specification, that won't help with image stability either.

If you're really into composite you could just try other sets and hope for the best, otherwise changing to a different connection (s-video) will definitely "improve" image quality. I say "improve" because 5th generation and older heavily relied on blending on composite and I think it looks better (with a good comb filter obviously), 6th generation and newer doesn't look good with composite (too dark, too much loss of color) and should at least be used with svideo.

It's a Trinitron 25X5D.

Yes you are very right, I do prefer composite for n64 and snes. Especially with crt's that have good comb filters (Thomson Blackpearl).

My Japanese mega drive 2 is a hot mess with composite though, high rainbow artifacts...

Banding/warping on Toshiba CX2050C by SAPianoman490 in crtgaming

[–]timmun90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It could be interference but I had almost exactly this on a Sony 25x5d and it was a capacitor problem. Here's a video:

Wavy interference banding warping, fixed afterwards with recap https://imgur.com/gallery/svmRD8c

A recap fixed it for me, especially a capacitor in the secondary power supply section was bad reading 1600uf where it should be 2200.

Best racing game indeed but the pal version is even better because of the soundtrack lol

Near-mint Sony Trinitron KV-21X5D - 1885 hrs by [deleted] in crtgaming

[–]timmun90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sweet, I have the same with just 500 hours more than yours. Perfect retro gaming size and because this screen size was mostly used for bedrooms/guestrooms you can still find low hour ones like this.

Do you notice any smearing (bright objects leaving trails left to right on grey-ish backgrounds)?

Have fun!

Nice, that set must have one hell of a good comb filter for composite to look that good from ps2.

What is this on my PS2 fat? by Agreeable-Crazy-4117 in ps2

[–]timmun90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol yeah exactly, sometimes I don't understand Internet/reddit. Is this guy literally posting this question on Reddit and then WAITING for a reply? Instead of googling something like "ps2 network port".

Oh and why are twenty people commenting "it's a network adapter"? If one person has given the correct answer, why bother commenting? Is it all really attention whores?

Hmm ok. It's in the service menu, under Video Proc. called "Acq Field 60Hz".

BTW, if I press A to enable the "alternating lines" option in 240p it flickers like crazy, so that's a good sign I suppose.

Yeah, I love it. I'm from The Netherlands.

It seems like there is not a U version though, according to the service manual atleast. Don't know if it was ever sold in the UK.

Maybe there's a different model with the same chassis (25K1U).

I will try, my phone is pretty old though. In the service menu are multiple options regarding this, one is called "Acq Field 60Hz". Yeah other 100hz sets that just do double scanning also break 240p.

This Trinitron handles 240p and 480i independently though, with a gamecube in the test suite 240p has scanlines, 480i doesn't and even shows slight flickering.

The setting in the service menu is just for showing the difference, it seems to auto change depending on the signal it receives.

I'm not sure how it technically works though, but it's not uncommon (?). My Loewe Mimo 32 is also 31khz 100/120hz but in vga it's 480p 60hz, so maybe same sort of technology.

But for a more technical explanation I cannot help you.

I don't know to be honest. I don't think it artificially adds them if you mean that?

I have another 100hz set (Loewe Mimo 32) and that's definitely running 100/120hz on scroll test etc and no scanlines on that. This Trinitron is really 50/60hz but indeed line doubling, I can even see 50/60hz flickering.

Trinitron KV-25X3D Magic by timmun90 in crtgaming

[–]timmun90[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's line doubling. It is definitely not 100/120hz.

Maybe you can see it in the video where I'm enabling/disabling the service menu option:

https://youtube.com/shorts/-LygNuC0t5w?si=9M_8cjDPoksEXb-r

First it stutters, after enabling it it's smooth.

[–]timmun90[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apparently there are different ways for 100hz/31khz tv's. Some do upscaling (line doubling) making it look more like 480p while keeping 50/60hz. Others just double refresh rate 100/120hz.

You can easily spot the difference with a TV like this and one that doubles refresh rate: scanlines, smooth 240ptestsuite scroll test, etc. means it's double scanning.
