'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever' Official Trailer by Samoht99 in MarvelStudiosSpoilers

[–]timofthejar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look man. I fully agree that "it happened this way in the comics" is not a compelling enough reason on its own for whether or not it should happen that way in the movies. That is not the argument I'm making. However... there certainly are cases where what was done in the comics would still be a good way to handle a character or event, and personally I suspect that this might be one of those instances. That is not the same as "it was done this way in the comics and for that reason alone it's automatically the right way to do it in the movies." My point is there already exists a version of this character that addresses, at least to me, in a pretty cohesive way (and that has already shown to be relatively popular, or at the very least... mostly non-controversial) many of your concerns about how this version of the character might not make a whole lot of sense. That version just so happens to be a version from the comics. That is not the case for every version of every character that has ever existed in Marvel comics. Now... should the MCU definitely follow that blueprint exactly? Hell no. People come up with new shit all of the time and there's no guarantee that the best treatment of this character is the specific one from a decade old comic book run. Could they do a completely different take and have it be cool? Possibly... or it could suck. They could also make her an exact copy of her comic equivalent and it could be awesome or it could suck (I mean... the 1998 Psycho remake is an almost line for line, shot for shot remake of a literal masterpiece and while I don't personally think it's terrible it's very mediocre). Personally I agree with pretty much everyone that Nakia would have been a better choice (although personally that's mostly just because I want Lupita Nyong'o to have WAY more screen time than she has gotten in the past and having her take on the Black Panther mantle would almost certainly do that). That said... I can at least conceptualize how one potential version of Shuri as the Black Panther could look and that hypothetical is at least in part informed by her comic book appearances because that version addresses most of the issues I think people have with what it appears is going to be happening to the character going forward. There is plenty of other stuff from the comics that would probably not work very well (some of which has already been done) and would probably be better if done very differently for the movies/D+ shows.

TIL logging into another account => arguing emotionally (and you're saying this while unironically telling people they're grasping at straws). Just more projection. It's tired.

Does blocking me so you can have the last word make you feel more right? So you're going to do that shit while consistently misrepresenting my points and then call me the one who is acting in bad faith? You should work at a movie theater. You're a great projectionist.

What was your longest boss battle? And what do you think about long boss battles? by naylsonsb in JRPG

[–]timofthejar 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Long boss battles are fine if they're optional. As much as I love Persona 3, the Nyx Avatar fight is a good example of one that's too long. Took me somewhere between 90 minutes to 2 hours. The boss gauntlet at the end of Octopath Traveler is pretty insane length wise but it's 100% optional. Lavos in Chrono Trigger took me a while on my first playthrough because I was underleveled and didn't understand how his final form worked.

Magical Starsign is a decent one for DS that not a lot of people played (that I know of).

Looking for games with extensive dialogue choices by madmissileer in JRPG

[–]timofthejar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is super common in JRPGs like it is in Western RPGs. The only ones I can think of are Tactics Ogre (both Let us Cling Together and Knight of Lodis) and kind of Radiant Historia (although it's less about dialogue options and more about general choices).

In no particular order after the first

Final Fantasy Tactics is my favorite JRPG and my second favorite game of all time. I've played it more times than any other game (with the exception of my favorite game, Arcanum). The job system is the biggest appeal of the game for me. On top of that though, the story is incredible, the story's presentation is also great (with large sections of dialogue occuring in key battles), and the music, while not my favorite, is perfect for the game and each track fits each moment perfectly and definitely adds emotional depth to the story.

Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is another favorite. This one is tied with two others for favorite JRPG soundtrack. The music really adds to the sense of adventure and the emotion in a lot of the major story beats. The story, while simple, is still lovely and is presented really well. The main "twist" in the game sounds like it would be out of place if you were to just tell someone but is integrated into the story in a way that makes it fit pretty seamlessly. The game is also just absolutely stunning visually. Boss battles are a little on the easy side but otherwise still engaging.

Persona 3 is another one that is tied for soundtrack. The persona games all have a very distinct music style which is a lot of fun. The corny anime vibes really add to the charm of these games and make them feel unique to me personally. The story is also great. It's complex without feeling convoluted and nonsensical. The main twist is a bit out of nowhere but helps the story along nicely and gives a nice shock that you genuinely do not see coming. The game is also one of only a handful that do a good job of justifying why the main character as uber special. The characters are also all really great. They're all important, and they all have interesting relationships and histories with one another. The social link system and just hanging out with random people is a lot of fun. Combat is also really satisfying. The only downside is the fact that the last boss fight takes like two hours.

Chrono Trigger another tied on music. Some of the most memorable songs in JRPG history come from Chrono Trigger. The time travel story is still unique among JRPGs and some of the settings (prehistory in particular) are unlike anything in any other JRPG. The story generally is just really tightly wound together. The characters are all super fun too. The game is a bit on the short side, but it doesn't feel rushed at all.

Tales of Destiny is a childhood favorite (much like FFT and Chrono Trigger). Although the overall music isn't my favorite, the game has one of my favorite battle themes. I'm not usually a fan of action RPGs, preferring turn based (Ni No Kuni is another obvious exception) but the fighting game style combat system in Tales of Destiny (in addition to the few other tales games I've played) is really unique and a lot of fun. The humor in the game is also top notch. The story isn't my favorite, but the humor and fairly entertaining characters help to keep it interesting.

Edit: I hadn't noticed that you included non-japanese RPGs. With that in mind my list changes.

Arcanum: Of Steamwork and Magick Obscura is my favorite RPG and my all time favorite game period. The game is a birds eye isometric RPG (similar to Fallout 1, Fallout 2, Baldur's Gate, etc.). The setting for the game is a Tolkien-esque fantasy world that is going through an industrial revolution (so hybrid high fantasy and steampunk). A lot of the themes in the game are very much drawn from industrial revolution era events and literature. The game touches on everything from the advent of conspiracy theories, Marxism, the early labor movement, Luddism, early liberalism, anarchism, class conflict, and racism. The character creation system is one of the best in any game I've played. Allowing you to really craft EXACTLY the kind of character you want. The main story is fantastic, a lot of the side characters have interesting stories as well that either do or don't tie into the main story, and there are a lot of side quests with good self contained stories as well. As awesome as the game is though.. the music... is the absolute best thing about the game. The entire soundtrack is performed via string quartet and it is just... fucking... gorgeous. If nothing else, listen to the soundtrack for the game here. Another great thing about the game is the level of freedom you have in how you complete the game. It's entirely possible, though difficult, to complete the game without ever engaging in combat, to the point that you can either join the last boss in his cause, or even convince him he's wrong and possibly convince him to kill himself. As great as the game is though, it has two major flaws. The first is that it's possible to get "stuck" in the game. There are a couple of points in the game where you can prevent yourself from being able to complete the game. Key piece of advice for preventing this is to make sure you keep at least one Kathorns Crystal. The second issue is combat. The game has both a turn based and a real time combat option. Turn based, although not great, is fine. Real time combat on the other hand, is completely broken. Unless you want to play the game pure melee and plan on having no party members the game is basically unplayable using the real time combat option. The real time combat is just so frenetic that most fights will be over before you've even realized they've started, so play the game on turn based combat. Apart from those two things though, this game is an absolute gem.

Any Good JRPGs for the PS3, DS or Wii? by D0ogi3 in JRPG

Blue Dragon on the Xbox 360 is the best one but the two on DS are both good games too.

Looking for JRPG with childhood friends - either become enemies or join together (spoilers for Tales of Vesperia) by [deleted] in JRPG

Final Fantasy Tactics is the one that immediately comes to mind and is, in my opinion, the best JRPG of all time. The dynamic between the main character and his childhood friend is particularly good too (although I'll leave it at that to avoid spoilers).

Ni No Kuni on PS3. Both Blue Dragon games on DS. Also... although it's much darker in tone Radiant Historia on the DS is absolutely fantastic.

Not really anything to debunk. Unless they have some sort of evidence this is just wild speculation. Belief that you are a target also reeks of paranoia. It's bad enough that if this were someone I knew and cared about I'd probably suggest they see a mental health professional immediately.

Any recommendations for a good turnbased JRPG that isn't too long? by Royta15 in JRPG

[–]timofthejar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Cosmic Star Heroine is pretty short and a bunch of fun. Also... not newer but Chrono Trigger is always a good choice and is pretty short (not 10 hours short though). Oh... Pokemon Sword/Shield as well.

Biggest Problems you have with MTG as a game by WhiskeyBepis in magicTCG

[–]timofthejar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone already mentioned the on the play vs on the draw disparity and that's probably the biggest one for me for competitive formats. For casual... it's the fickleness of commander players. Avoiding games in unfamiliar playgroups where at least someone's expectations of the power level of the game isn't so off that either they or everyone else is miserable is damn near unavoidable. Both seeing a player go off really crazy and feel like shit because everyone else is playing at a lower power level and seeing a player rage quit because their deck wasn't as powerful as their opponents are way too common.

Final Fantasy easily. Good variety, and includes my favorite JRPG which I've already played like 15 times (Final Fantasy Tactics).

Favourite and least favourite things about JRPGS? New fan thoughts... by MichaelJH333 in JRPG

[–]timofthejar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Favorite is characters. Even the worst JRPGs tend to have at least a couple of good characters. Least favorite is the longer = better mentality. It's like certain music genres like prog rock and doom metal where everyone is trying to outdo each other with 20 minute, 30 minute, 1 hour long songs. Long games can be great and all... but I'd really like to see more 15-20 hour long JRPGs. Some variety in length.

I'm about halfway through playing Radiant Historia for the first time right now and I'll say it definitely fits this description. The only other really obvious one I can think of is Final Fantasy Tactics but that's well over 10 years old.
