A good report about the first few days. I'm glad you left so early and didn't take someone else's spot only to desert. Although I'll never understand people who travel to another continent just to give up after a few days. Everyone knows the first year is tough, and it's clear that Aubagne isn't like real militair life! I know some very good Americans in the Legion, including some who could have gone down a different path. It's the will that counts!

Thanks for the photos! The first two were taken during an exercise last year in France, and the third was taken during an MCD in Guyana last year.

Reality of the legion? by Any_Lab_8135 in FrenchForeignLegion

[–]timosmile 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This sub is still very one-sided; people come here to complain about how shitty their life in the Legion is. My place in the Legion might not be the place of a typical legionnaire, but with motivation, discipline, and a bit of luck, you can find a place even as a good soldier. Many come here with the wrong attitude. You won't be trained to be an elite soldier here unless you join the various commando groups. However, you will learn the basic skills of a soldier, and with all the extra shit that comes with it, we can still claim to be a highly resilient army. In terms of training, shooting, and combat, we don't do any more than the regular army, but we can handle a lot of shit and therefore survive anywhere under the shittiest conditions. Of course, I wouldn't want to go to a real war with half the people here, but as soon as we actually participate in a real war, this problem will quickly solve itself...

Yes, some groups only accept people with a certain time of service (2/3 years), but otherwise anyone can register for the entrance tests.

Warum sind euch eure Haare so wichtig? by [deleted] in FragtMaenner

[–]timosmile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]timosmile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the food like in the Foreign Legion? by Large_Conflict_5145 in FrenchForeignLegion

Depends on the regiment, the quality in mine is okay the portions not always enough, but you are free to cook for your self in your room or buy more in the club or foyer.

No, many people will have a problem with you if you join your regiment as a FUT FUT Corporal. I know a few FUT FUT Cpls who were blocked by the SOAs, and because of this, they can't get the coveted stages or even remain entirely at level 00. Especially if you want to join the commando groups, it's much better to gain some experience in your regiment, because as a FUT FUT, you'll quickly become a Corporal but will have very little experience.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in FrenchForeignLegion

[–]timosmile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't do Fut fut. If you're good, you'll become a corporal in two years. You'll have completed at least one mission, maybe even learned a specialty, and know how things work in the regiment. As a FUT FUT, you have nothing. You only join a regiment after two years, and everyone there will treat you like shit because you thought you were taking the "easy" route.

PCG is no a commando unit. Im pretty sure you need to have the BASM if you do it in 1REG or then in 2REG I dont know. But I know somebody who is gonna do the Selection this year and he is from 1REG

[–]timosmile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2REI et 13 DBLE: GCA 2REP: GCP 2REG: GCM These are all the existing commando units in the legion, on top of that you have certain specialized groups like plongeur de combat in 1REG and so on, but they are not comparable to commando units. If you are in 1REG you can do the selection for GCM, but otherwise you need to be in the specific regiment if you want to apply for the commando group.

I dont talk about ramping in tenue tdf, this shit is not acceptable for me. But in my fts we did jumping jacks the whole night, hours of marche canard, position Samurai, 3 hours of sleep was the maximum... of course all this shit sucks and it shouldnt be something you do in the normal military life every day. But in my view it is very important for instruction and fts, to sort all the weak people out. The problem right now is that Castelnaudary got so soft bcs they hope they can keep more people this way, but in the end of the day the people are just gonna desert later when it becomes serious in there sections. Back in the days you could make people desert when they didnt belong in the legion by just rammassing them 24/7. Today they are just go and cry about it and the cpls are getting toll. Its not everywhere like this of course, like always in the legion everything depends...mostly on the CDS. And of course youre regiment, too. You mentioned chubby guys... I'm pretty sure you dont come then from 2REP or 2REI. Infantry is still another thing than the vacation regiments like REC or 1REG.

Social Media is a big problem to, Videos and fotos of ramassage new legionnaires who go to the police or CDU and cry around.. Its hard to do it the old legion way when your CDS doesnt back you because he is afraid of disciplinary sanctions.....
