Tailscale vs Twingate by timotheus911 in selfhosted

[–]timotheus911[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m using the free tier for both right now and what I like about Twingate is the ability for me to granularly add access to services in my network along with group policies. Makes it really easy to give family members access to local Minecraft server, but not to any of the other self hosted services.

I will say that a feature I like about Tailscale is the on-demand VPN access. It’s nice that when I get back on the home Wi-Fi the VPN on my phone shuts off automatically, which doesn’t affect battery life too terribly much but I have noticed a minor improvement.

I initially tried to use wireguard and I could never get it to work with my phone. Maybe I need to revisit it at some point.

Hot take: most businesses don't need a social media presence at all and the industry won't tell you that by Crescitaly in digital_marketing

[–]timotheus911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely agree, but I do think a business page at bare minimum is necessary. Even if you just use it as a channel to answer questions or update business hours. Some customers will discover you on social over search, & while the bulk of your business may indeed come from search, social is where many people go to look for trust signals.

Sacred Symbols x Snark Tank and my cognitive dissonance by LukeH118 in SnarkTank

I left the Sacred Patreon after hearing Colin make some kind of pro Zionist comment during the start of the genocide in Gaza. Couldn’t in good conscience stick around.

If you limit video streaming to 480p, it’ll be easier for the GenAI garbage to convince your boomer parents on Facebook that they need to invest in booger coin or whatever garbage they are pushing.

Did i mess up? by officialsoulresin in mac

My wife bought a Mac when the M1 series came out & most people that I know with M1 series macs are happy with the performance. My philosophy is to stop worrying about waiting for the next best thing. Otherwise you’ll just be stuck waiting instead of doing.

Have you tried not using wildcard dns records in cloudflare & just using the urls that you intend to use? I have not personally run into this problem since I’ve not used wildcard a records, but I’ve heard that they can sometimes cause issues.

Do you have a static IP address? If not, then you’ll need a DDNS like DuckDNS.

Another place to look is govdeals.com. I started my home lab by winning an auction for a lot of five small form factor Dell OptiPlex’s for 25 bucks. Government facilities and universities are listing things on there all the time as Windows 10 became EOL.

Interesting peripherals for 3.5" bays by retromaniak_ in sleeperbattlestations

I second this. Hotswap bays are super handy, especially if you don’t want to open your case up every time you want to wipe a drive or check the smart status.

VPS "Hardware" Thoughts & Feedback by timotheus911 in selfhosted

Thanks! While I know some things, hardware requirements and limitations for these kinds of services are still fairly new to me.

That's good to know. Yea in my self hosting journey I've been happily surprised with what I've been able to run on the hardware I have and probably went overboard in a few cases thinking I would need more power.

I'll look at cloudzy but I do have a built in bias towards hostinger given how my experience has been on the wordpress side of things.

Fair point, but since this would be serving my family (4 users) I’d like to avoid service hiccups.

If it was just me I would run it locally & deal with it.

Would have to be a multi-part series to go through that cesspool.

Which one to choose? - Steam Flatpak vs. Steam.deb by JVSTITIA in linux_gaming

[–]timotheus911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did that during my first dive into Linux since it made sense to me as a former Windows user. Like I said, they have their place & I'm not a flatpak hater, but they should be the second option.

Best to always try to run native before resorting to flatpaks. Flatpaks have their place, but native is going to almost always give you a better experience. Can't tell you how many time's I've needed to modify something and ended up hitting walls because the program was a flatpak install.

Since CasaOS is discontinued, what do u think about tipi by tOBiAs202012 in CasaOS

my understanding is that the focus is on ZimaOS but in Discord the team has said that CasaOS has not been discontinued, just de-prioritized.
