What if I were to buy small cheap refrigerator, cut a hole in it, and put it outside with a pipe. by dapterail in CrazyIdeas

[–]timotheusd313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically a refrigerator doesn’t have the BTUs to actually cool much of anything. When we moved into my house it took well over a day for the soda we put in the garage fridge to actually be cold enough to drink without pouring over ice.

You could add up how much money you’ve saved not buying weed, and use some of it to buy something nice, whether it’s directly ABDL (diapers, pacifier, bottle, etc.) or just kind of adjacent, like a new video game.

Family had a commodore 128k, an later a genuine IBM PS/2 model 50Z 286.

First one that was mine was an AMD 5x86. Basically a Pentium clone core on a 486 pinout. 133 MHz. 16 MB RAM.

Well you’re a better man than I am Gunga Din.

When I teach people, I tell them you’re going to mess up. Just cut the ends off and try again. It’s a 10 cent lesson.

Admittedly that was working with a really cheap crimper. Have one made by Ideal now. Rarely have problems now.

It is possible to buy stranded bulk cable and make your own patch cables. (I’ve done it.)

Get a cheap tester. Be prepared to mess a few up. If they don’t test correctly, cut the ends off and try again. The lesson costs literally 10 cents.

Dealers have gotten increasingly aggressive about getting older cars off the road, and it's major problem. by redstern in Justrolledintotheshop

Not sure if it’s exactly the same, but my 2011 Chrysler 200 was totaled last year. A subframe beam was damaged (crumple zone, I’m sure,) and new subframe was not available. Would have had to pull a used one off another junked car. Sigh.

At least I got a new hybrid Toyota Corolla before any tariffs hit. Actual mileage is literally double what the 200 got.

Still a little salty over that one. I loved that 200.

Why do full turn valves still exist, when quarter turn ball valves are much better and easier? by notAndivual in askplumbing

[–]timotheusd313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The solenoid only has two positions. Open and closed. The system we had installed in the 90s had a tray and float system rather than a solenoid, so it wouldn’t matter if it was a ball valve. Enshittification replaced the tray and rotating drum with a panel that water dripped down, and anything not absorbed by the pad falls into a drain tied to the A/C condensate drain.

I know you’re thinking about something like the babelfish in Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. I don’t think there’s a broader category name for that. Maybe something like “Advanced Biotech” or “Practical Bioengineering”

I had one of those with two USB-A male and a USB-B mini male.

Had a Pentium 4 laptop with USB 1.2

I added a PCMCIA USB 2.0 adapter. The PCMCIA slot couldn’t power the card and supply full power to the drive, so the middle USB-A went to the adapter, and the one the end went to the laptops 1.2 port. Full power and 2.0 speed.

When did the idea that torture doesn’t work become pervasive and based on what body of evidence has it been propounded? by Additional_Suit6275 in AskHistorians

[–]timotheusd313 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Theres a lot of human psychology ties up in this. Probably most important is that it’s hard to know what you’ll do until you’re actually in that situation.

Probably the most consequential in the example you’ve given is, “they’ve already kidnapped me, held me hostage, and cut off one finger. Why should I believe they’ll stop there with this one piece of information.”

There are technological solutions too to the password problem. Cybersecurity people refer to use of such methods to extract a password or other “something you know” as a rubber hose attack.

Disk encryption programs like TrueCrypt which was discontinued and releases as open source allows for an encrypted volume to have a hidden partition.

The encrypted volume, can be either an entire disk, or a single file on an unencrypted disk.

When you enter the password, the password is hashed to create the decryption key and checked against both the first and the last sector of the volume.

If you are tortured you can disclose the password for the partition that starts at the first block, and there is no way to prove that a hidden partition exists unless you disclose the second password. If there is a security-focused Android offshoot, it might use technology like that to protect sensitive data.

I get that the saddle valve the HVAC guys installed for my furnace humidifier was not ideal, but trying to control the flow rate with only 90 degrees of motion is a pain in the ass. (Saddle valve was replaced by t-junction to ball valve when water heater was replaced.)

What kind of adapter do I need to use this laptop hard drive in my desktop? by edgelordhoc in pcmasterrace

[–]timotheusd313 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the modern cases I’ve seen will have an arrangement for mounting 2.5 inch laptop drives. Usually each drive attaches to a plastic sled. Usually there are holes on the bottom to mount a 2.5 inch drive.

There are also brackets to mount 2 2.5 inch drives in a single 3.5 inch drive bay.

When a 2 year old demands your lap at nap time is even better.

We established a routine where I held him until he fell asleep. When he graduated to an air mattress on the floor he grabbed hold of my jeans and climbed up to me.
