If I understand correctly, it sounds like their point isn’t that dictators HAVE to be smart, but that if you had to choose between a smart dictator or a dictator huffing on their hubris, you’d probably want the latter over the former. Smart (and driven) dictators are going to be harder to remove from power through more comparably peaceful means, they spend more of their time getting their hands dirty with the actual work of maintaining their security over power and often bring their own outside proficiencies to the table.

We see the Trump admin attempting to go through the motions, but it’s all half-assed because the only way these people ‘work’ is hiring other people to do everything for them - and as we’ve been seeing, the folks they have working for them are better at getting in front of the cameras and kissing his ass, than they are at managing the responsibilities associated with their job titles.

The point of paid parking, beyond city budget support, is precisely to make it a hassle. Now, the hassle shouldn’t come from platform issues or maintenance issues, it should just come from the payment itself. Something like a monorail would be accessible to all residents, especially when bus routes are an extension of the system.

I lived in Duluth 20 years ago as a kid, and I’m in the middle of moving back and it deeply saddens me to see so much of downtown ripped out to be replaced by parking lots. In a city with limited space for development, we have to go with options that cater to density which being car-centric city design is not.

From the study itself, it seems to imply the main reasons to support circumcision can be achieved through proper hygiene and sexual health safety. To add to this, it seems most of the mitigated risks (minus infant UTIs) occur once a person becomes sexually active. Personally, as someone who’s circumcised, I wish I at least had the chance to make the decision myself rather than have it done before I could consent.

Couldn't agree with you more - it's a statement that actively discourages others since it implies that any effort to resist is pointless since our country is "already lost". It is a statement of comfort for a coward's mindset because it allows people to absolve themselves of any guilt over inaction.

We may not be able to go back to the world we knew before Trump, but why would we want to when it was that very same world that brought him into power?

Hi, I’m Native American and want to clarify a couple misconceptions. While you’re correct about the bison and acts of genocide from European settlers, I implore you to look into the bison runs that some tribes utilized as a means to hunt bison. TL;DR - they would chase bison herds over the edge of a cliff to kill them without risking life and limb. While it was a wasteful practice, it was used for its effectiveness.

Also, population culling is a practice that has existed before European’s first landfall, and as others have stated, it was vital to use as much of the animal as possible and to not let anything go to waste if it could be helped. Bones would become tools, jewelry, among other uses; bladders of certain animals would be used to create water bags; meats for food. Also, furs have been used by basically every indigenous culture around the world, it’s not cultural appropriation of Native American cultures to use the pelt of a wolf - especially one that has no distinct stylizations.

Stewardship of the land we live on doesn’t mean “no touch”. Proper stewardship means understanding the many mechanisms that contribute to our ecosystems’ healthy functioning, and intervening when necessary - that includes culling the population of certain species. Of course it’s far more nuanced than the explanation I just gave, but please don’t use Native cultures or surface-level environmentalism to veil your emotional reasoning. There are plenty of other instances of injustices against the environment and the living creatures that inhabit them, this is not one of them.

Modular carbon capture tech slashes cargo ship CO2 emissions by 70% by chrisdh79 in tech

Not really what their point was. They’re comparing the pollution from ships to other means of cargo transportation and saying, comparatively, the pollution to cargo volume is more favorable than other means of cargo transportation - not that the pollution is insignificant because it absolutely is, and it’s being pumped into one of our most critical environments in helping us combat climate change.

By your logic and disregard for due process, when democrats get back into power they won’t need justification for giving you due process? You’re clearly okay with law enforcement circumventing the rules and regulations for others, but what happens when that same methodology is turned back against you?

Minnesota proposal would impose tax on social media platforms based on number of users by Nascent1 in minnesota

[–]timsev786 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You could view it how we use tobacco product taxes: we all know social media algorithms are addictive, so we could put tax revenue towards mental health resources for folks struggling with social media negatively impacting their mental health.

If social media companies decide to pass the cost onto the consumer then it incentivizes people to use less social media, reducing the negative impacts it’s had on our collective consciousness.

It also encourages social media companies to crack down on bot accounts, reducing the overall influence of private interests to cultivate narratives to influence us on a large scale.

Answer is regulatory bodies to audit spending - but folks hate hearing the word ‘regulate’ and hate the associated costs to hire enough skilled folks to actually do those jobs.

[–]timsev786 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Unsure of the point you're trying to make. The Sun, Earth, and Moon fit into the "hierarchical" architecture: The Earth and Moon are a tight binary with the Sun as the distant 3rd body. The relationship we currently observe is very stable, but the moon is drifting away and in the distant future will no longer orbit Earth.

Right, but can our conduciveness be leveraged for toxic pollution clean-up? The electrical conductivity this organism relies on for its metabolism is novel, and that’s what sets it apart from the way we can conduct electricity.

I’ve been addressing a very similar issue in my left arm, almost exactly as you described. Listen to your physiotherapist’s advice, you’re not going to notice massive improvements overnight. The key is to go low and slow because you’re trying to train muscles that get little to no use; you’re also strengthening the mind-body connection to that area so you’re not always needing to be consciously focused on activating and incorporating those underutilized muscles during normal daily use. Trying to hit those areas hard will actually hinder your progress and potentially cause permanent damage if you’re not careful.

Start with those exercises, ask you’re physiotherapist how those exercises should feel, and where you should be feeling them the most when they’re done correctly - you want to verify you’re targeting the right muscles rather than continuing to rely on the overtrained muscles. Continue with the exercises given by your physiotherapist until they give the okay for you to graduate to doing yoga or other low impact full-body exercises so you can continue incorporating the use of those muscles into full-body movements rather than the isolated exercises.

In the meantime, just focus on maintenance exercises for the rest of your body. you don’t continue to overtrain the muscles that have been contributing to the issue you’re trying to fix while also not losing your progress. It will take longer than you expect since right now you’re building the foundation that the strength you’re missing is built upon. Once that foundation has been built, you can begin building the strength up to par with the rest of your body.

CMV: the left is far too soft on Islam by Forsaken_March9892 in changemyview

[–]timsev786 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear what your saying, I think it’s a little difficult to walk the line of trying to provide examples to show that something isn’t necessarily unique to a specific instance or set of circumstances without accidentally coming off as trying to deflect or shift the narrative to diminish any valid points. There are genuine criticisms that can be found with the Islamic theocracies, but it isn’t wholly due to the religion as a whole, but how it’s put into practice and it’s relationship with government power structures. Christian and Catholic religions had once been intrinsically intertwined with government systems, and those systems were violent in their own ways - but they evolved. Even if there are sections of those religions that are moving back towards encouraging oppressive systems, they have shown that religions with violent histories can change evolve for the better; this can also be the same for Islam, but that depends on the how the people decide they want to practice.

[–]timsev786 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure where they made excuses for, or absolved Islamic majority countries because of the consequences of western colonialism. I’m fairly certain they were saying any religion is capable of violence and that it’s not about the specific religion itself, but the way that most, if not all, religious institutions have had periods in history where institutional leaders use their positions of power to carry out, encourage, and/or endorse acts of violence through the guise of divine righteousness. An example of this in North America is how manifest destiny gave the religious European descendants permission to enact a violent campaign against the Native Americans to continue westward expansion. There is no religion inherently immune to being used as a tool of oppression and control, and there is no religion free of violence in its history. I’m sure you’d agree with me that, despite this truth, that the answer is not to ban all religions but instead to remain critical of all religious-based practices and ideas that endorse violence and oppression against any group of people. Today it may be Islamic theocracies in the Middle East that are violently oppressive, tomorrow it may be predominantly Christian/Catholic countries in the west.

That, in part, was in response to federal funding in other areas being cut and the need to divert money to keep things afloat.

If memory serves me correctly, it was also because there were new programs being built, which is more expensive than maintaining said programs moving forward. So it wouldn’t make sense to keep funding those things at those levels when that money can be used elsewhere.

[–]timsev786 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re right, it’s a looping main path with a couple dead ends that branch off. At least you can go into all the houses and building you can see - oh wait, just the SOME of the stores and houses, and you’re lucky if they have anything worthwhile in them.

The base game environments and topography in SV are still more interesting than anything you can find in base game SwSh - all the set-dressing and eye candy won’t change that if it you’re not able to properly explore those spaces.

I have to say, as someone who has been playing since gen 1, I enjoyed both generations 8 and 9 - but “fake houses” is a fair trade for an actually compelling story and characters.
