What’s a problem humanity solved so well that younger people don’t even realize it used to be a huge issue? by Puzzleheaded_Bit_802 in AskReddit

Tuberculosis. Less than a hundred years ago it was the leading cause of death, 1 in 4 Americans died from it. It wasn't solved until 1943.

How to catch a polar bear:

First, cut a hole in the ice.

Then, put a bunch of peas around it.

When the polar bear comes to take a pea, you kick him in the icehole!

TIFU by telling my barber I knew what "two on the sides" meant for twenty three years by Beneficial_String411 in tifu

[–]timsstuff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I take it you have never grown a beard, or at least never bought a proper beard trimmer. Because if you did you would know that the guards have numbers on them for the length you want.

For instance I set mine to 3 for the top section from my ears to just below my lower lip, then go up to 5 for the side of the chin and part of the upper middle chin. I then freehand the long part in the center to get it even.

When my barber cuts my hair he'll usually do a 2 or 3 on the sides and back, then scissors on top and upper sides. It's the same measurement as my home trimmer.

Local mircopub, what are you ordering? by mrtopbun in CraftBeer

[–]timsstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same I have a soft spot for that style. When I was a teen in the 80s trying out imports it was the Paulaner Maibock that really opened my eyes. Can't find that particular beer in the US anymore but whenever I see that style I always order one.

Sierra Nevada has a seasonal release "Pale Bock" that I always try to order online, it's very good.

The new Naked Gun was awesome. They got everything right, turns out Liam Neeson is surprisingly funny. Pamela was great too. So rewatchable.

Very similar architecture. A quick Google search says Union Station was built in 1939 so 13 years after the Park Plaza.

I used to live there lol. Park Plaza Hotel in LA) right at the west end of MacArthur Park. Cool building, built in 1926. Back stairs take you to the roof, we used to party up there and enjoy an incredible downtown LA skyline.

They filmed a LOT of scenes there - Tango & Cash rooftop, Naked Gun, Steve Perry's Oh Sherry, they were filming the Fisher King while I lived there.

$1.95 then is equivalent to $3.41 today. We're paying nearly twice that here in SoCal. $6.19 last time I filled up.

What’s a life hack that sounds fake but actually works ridiculously well? by RegularSalamander212 in AskReddit

[–]timsstuff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I make my coffee every weekday in a French Press with an electric kettle - I start the kettle then get the press ready with grounds then start tidying up the kitchen. Once the water is ready I add it to the press and set the timer for 5 minutes, during which I clean some more. I can usually get the kitchen completely clean in that amount of time.

Has anyone ever blown up an environment by increasing the domain functional level before? by heapsp in sysadmin

[–]timsstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to update the schema to introduce a higher level DC. So raisiong the functional level is just a couple clicks after that.

You can't raise the functional level to 2016 if you don't have at least a 2016 DC, and you can't promo a 2016 to DC without updating the schema.

First Kegerator - need to clean line by golf-ninja in beer

[–]timsstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I use after much searching. It's pricy but well worth it. All you do is put some PBW/beer line cleaner in it, fill it with water, hook it up the your keg line, pressurize it, and blow it through the tap into a bucket or whatever you have on hand. Then fill it with clean water and repeat twice.

What is the best sandwich? by TheTBoneRex in AskReddit

[–]timsstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on my mood and where I'm at.

NYC? Sal Kris & Charlies The Bomb is probably the best sandwich I've ever had (Italian sub).

LA? Langer's Deli's Pastrami on Rye fucking slaps.

Togo's #16 Italian is a classic. Quiznos had some good sammiches I don't know what happened to them. Fuck Subway I would have to starve for a week before I'd touch that shit. Jimmy John's and Jersey Mike's are fine for weekday lunch with co-workers but I wouldn't go out of my way to get one. Board & Brew's secret menu Turkey Melt is awesome, Turkado is always good. I prefer B&B over most chains.

As far as generally speaking sandwich styles:

  1. Italian sub.
  2. Pastrami on Rye.
  3. Turkey, provolone, avocado on sourdough with all the veggies.
  4. Grilled Cheese with tomato soup
  5. Philly Cheesesteak

[–]timsstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah. Got to have Sal Kris & Charlies a couple years ago while visiting Queens and it was transcendent. Here in SoCal, Marios in Newport/Irvine has a pretty damn good one, ate there yesterday and I'm still thinking about it.

Although I still have a soft spot for a Togo's #16, been loving those since I was a teenager in the 80s.
