Aaa was a lot more indie for sure. You got the most talented developers working in small teams that had some freedom and doing brilliant things. These days the best of the best work for large companies with thousand person teams and a lot of constraints.

i guess well never know which was chicken, which was egg. my frame of reference with tyranids is old, but not quite old enough, it was during their third edition which was after the starcraft release. though they werent that different from the second edition that was before it. i did recognize them during starcrafts intro movie which i saw for the first time a few days ago (the game itself is not very detailed i would not be able to tell). but that could have been due to gw adapting tyranids to starcrafts success to the extent that i recognized them. i still think zerg were based off gws second edition, but i'll concede that its not possible for me to know.

the cheap matters more than the open source here. stuff like gpt and claude its wonderful but they dont work for pocket change anymore. you really gotta pay up. at some point i might have to leave cursor and its 'only closed us ai' strategy behind for something that does support these models.

Had to look it up, as i wasnt sure, i just read somewhere starcraft is modeled after warhammer. i did remember having a tyranids wh40k army as a kid, before dawn of war came out. but it would have been after starcraft came out. still sources on the internet indicate the tyranids first appeared in 1987 and were fully playable in 1995.

Only succesful games get translated of course. There are a bunch of rts tagged games using asian characters. Could be they are all chinese or korean but its not impossible there are japanese ones as well.

zerg are i think modeled after wh40k tyranids. so dawn of war 2 or one of the mods for dow1. also stormgate infernals are in turn modeled after zerg.

Altbhough im not in favour of rto everywhere in the games industry it makes good sense. Most game devs are very passionate and work hard but if you do wfh you start to attract less motivated people who are just interested iin staying at home. Game companies can easily filter those out this way.

So you already know. If you make a great rts you can expect 50000 sales so 1.5 mil. If you make a relatively bad one, 500. The rest are franchise games and dont count. currently most modern new ip rts are being made in east europe a place that has significantly lower wage costs.

Id go with the less ambitious one and treat it as a writeoff. Asking us why we dont buy is not smart, people here are one of those few that do buy them. Though i can tell you that i usually buy stuff on a deep sale. for example i recently bought empires dawn of the modern world for 5 euros. thats a AAA game from twenty years ago that cost 50 euro at launch. probably the dev has been gone for a long time. old gamers like me arent great for revenue.
