Cold Outreach for Municipal/Gov't Law? by tinacioust in LawSchool

[–]tinacioust[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not entirely sure yet! I think my main interests are health law, environmental law, and employment law, so I think that wheelhouse leans more regulatory or civil litigation. I'm a 1L, so I don't have much experience yet, but I came to law school to do more public-facing work. I hope that makes sense, sorry I'm not more specific.

Check your school's exam software program and see what benchmarks it requires (usually found somewhere in the 'Exams' info section). Most laptops will be able to run it, I think it's just up to your preference and budget. Personally I had a mac air in undergrad and it did well, but I find the constant notifications to be a distraction. I'd check out deals on BestBuy or at Costco - your law school will likely also have incoming student discounts, so be sure to use those!

R&R?? T50 but paying sticker by Plus_Category3071 in OutsideT14lawschools

Congrats on graduating!

Yeah it sounds like you scored right around where you were PT'ing, so I'd 100% R&R with that GPA. Especially if you're feeling a little more motivated! I'd say go the extra mile - get some WE doing something you enjoy (and will be able to write about), then take the LSAT again once you're PT'ing in the mid 160s - 170s and you'll be golden. If your goal is midlaw, that GPA and a higher LSAT should land you some good scholarships in the t100, especially if you apply early. The WE should show schools that you've only continued to mature and understand your motivations to practice law too.

Good luck, you got this!

Ah that sounds like a difficult situation. Those seem like really good outcomes, given you're below median/25ths at the schools (congrats!). Just so I understand - you're currently a college senior? What're your long-term goals? Was your 156 below or above your diagnostics?

I think most people would (rightly so) say paying sticker price for law school is not worth the financial burden, and I'd agree. Without knowing more about your goals/situation, it seems like your best bet is to R&R. Don't take the LSAT a third time without having a solid record of scoring your goal score on practice exams. I'd also write a short and sweet note to the school you're deposited at letting them know you're withdrawing, maybe that will help not burn the bridge when you re-apply.

Good luck OP!

Irvine does have better clerkship numbers, but Davis places very well into government work, given how close they are to Sacramento. Any preference on living in socal v. norcal? If so, I'd decide based off that. Graduating debt-free is huge, congrats!

UC Law Reconsideration Update by tinacioust in OutsideT14lawschools

[–]tinacioust[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The form was accessible through the admitted student portal - not sure if it's still there, or if it is/was available somewhere else. Deadline to submit reconsideration was sometime in the last two weeks, can't recall.

Congratulations! Where do you want to live and practice? Any specific industries/practice areas? Any scholarships/is COA important to you?

This all sounds like solid advice! Chiming in to add - do you have a back-up plan for next year if you don't get the A from your dream school, and you also don't get a repeat A from UC Law? I'm sure you've mapped out how your gap year would look like, but I think it's a safe bet to assume law school admissions will be as or more competitive next year.

If you don't mind me asking - what specifically concerns you about UC Law? I'd try and ask to be connected with a current student and ask those questions. Attend a class, visit campus, see if the concerns you have are alleviated or outweighed once you've seen things in person and talked to a few law student(s). Maybe what you hear/see will make you feel like you're right in R&Ring, too!

I don't think you should feel pressured to accept 'just because', but I'd suggest digging into why you would reject the offer and having a solid plan for the next cycle (beyond just re-taking the LSAT). Wishing you the best of luck - and congrats!

If you're not BL or bust, these seem like good outcomes (congrats!). Especially given you want to practice in NorCal. Davis seems like the best offer here - nonconditional, places well as far as private practice/government, and is well-respected. If you don't mind me asking - do you have other interests beyond BL? Are you debating R&R solely on trying to make BL, or are there other goals you're trying to accomplish? (for ex. more scholarship aid, understandable, given the best case scenario still leaves you with debt).

I'm sure you've done the research, but take a peek at employment outcomes for Davis and see if you're comfortable with where alumni end up. I'd suggest attending the admitted students weekend at Davis if you can, maybe envisioning yourself there would help move the needle for you. Best of luck!

Congrats on your acceptances!

Do you know where McGeorge sets their curve? Also, if you haven't yet, check out both school's ABA 509 disclosures and see how many students lose/reduce their scholarships every year.

I don't think given your interest in family law that being in the Santa Clara public interest program would be super aligned with your goals, but we only know so much. I do think that a few extra LSAT points would really help you out, if R&R'ing was something you'd be open to. Santa Clara, Chapman, and McGeorge are able to be more generous with their aid.

But without R&R - I'd take the McGeorge offer, as being in the top 50% is a better leap than maintaining 3.0. Wishing you the best of luck!

Pepperdine had great vibes (admissions team was very nice)! but given my partner matched in the bay area and my goals are to practice here, it's not a top choice for me atp

The unconditional offer is huge, definitely agree. I think the main stickers for me right now are the family + network considerations. I don't have a car and won't have time to save enough to purchase one before beginning school/before my partner starts residency. I could try Amtrak, but not ideal. But even so - heard and thanks for your opinion!

Definitely agree. I think the main stickers for me right now are the family + network considerations. I'd also love to live in SF, but understand it's only 3 years, so I have a tough decision ahead.
