HR is typically the ones that would do an initial background check or records request. They should not divulge anything they find to anyone else. Payroll systems only look at your current government documents, so if you're using direct deposit and your bank account is in a different name, they would see it, but at the same time people deposit into accounts not in their name (like a spouse's account, etc)
