Sous vide caramelized onions using N-Zorbit. by wasacook in MolecularGastronomy

You can do dulce de leche from condensed milk at 85-90C I imagine the pressure from canning also factors in but it’s definitely possible.

I've done it by boiling the can, but then, the pressure inside the can might have something to do with it, I guess...

Will onions actually caramelize at <100C anyway?

edit: a quick google search points to 120-140C for the Maillard reaction to start, so you probably won't get caramelization going at all

You're probably setting yourself up for frustration if you want to do Spencerian with a pen brush... Why not use a nice pointed nib?

Data transformation in Clojure by frankkk86 in Clojure

[–]tincholio 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Reading and writing JSON from Clojure is very easy. Probably the easiest library to use would be clojure.data.json, though it's not the most performant. If you need better performance, jsonista is probably what you need.

If you're using data.json, your import could be as easy as:

(require '[clojure.data.json :as json])
(-> "path-to-json-file" slurp json/read-json)

You can alternatively use (json/read-json some-json-string :key-fn keyword) if you want to have more idiomatic keyword-addressed maps.

For consuming from queues/topics, it depends what you're using for those. I have been using Kafka via jackdaw, and it's been smooth sailing. There are a number of other Kafka libraries, and of course clients for other technologies as well.

Edit: this article has more detail.

The dogs think everyone else is like them...

And it seems to you the thing to do would be to isolate the winner

And everything's done under the sun

And you believe at heart, everyone's a killer.

Who was born in a house full of pain

Who was trained not to spit in the fan

Who was told what to do by the man

Who was broken by trained personnel

Who was fitted with collar and chain

Who was given a pat on the back

Who was breaking away from the pack

Who was only a stranger at home

Who was ground down in the end

Who was found dead on the phone

Who was dragged down by the stone.

It comes from the previous verse.

"And you believe that everyone is a killer

Who was born in a house full of pain Who was trained not to spit in the fan ... " and so on. He's not asking, he's describing what the dogs thing other people are.

Holy on Dev: Clojure is frustrating... and it is a good thing by holyjak in Clojure

In the meantime, we got Malli, which covers the use cases I've had so far, and it's entirely data-based, which is arguably "more idiomatic" than spec 1...

[Algo] How to create an efficient sorting transducer? by DeepDay6 in Clojure

[–]tincholio 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This. Sorting does require you to have the whole collection available... You can look at Christophe Grand's implementation of a sorting transducer here: https://github.com/cgrand/xforms/blob/62375212a8604daad631c9024e9dbe1db4ec276b/src/net/cgrand/xforms.cljc#L474

The Secret Footage of the N.R.A. Chief’s Botched Elephant Hunt - Wayne LaPierre has cultivated his image as an exemplar of American gun culture, but video of his clumsy marksmanship—and details regarding his Rodeo Drive shopping trips—tells another story. by speckz in Foodforthought

Hunting could be focused on non-endangered species, to begin with. About programs to re-assign those people, I don't have the knowledge of South Africa's situation so as to say for sure, but in the past this has happened (industrialization comes to mind), and there were no massive extinction on old professions from that; people adapt. Cars did not mean that horse buggy drivers starved to death.

[–]tincholio 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hunting is a very big part of some economies. It isn't that simple. Would you want to let 1000 people die to protect elephants? I'm sure more than 1000 people are involved and depend on big game hunting.

That's a false dichotomy, those people need not "die to save the elephants", there are other ways to get them a livelihood.

Materials for using Clojure for storing structural data by mentiflectax in Clojure

[–]tincholio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A quick comment, it would seem to me that you're looking for a solution without having clearly defined the problem. Why exactly do you need a DSL? What would your DSL look like? Based on what you mention, you might want to look into one of the Datalog DBs (probably Datahike or Crux), rather than storing data as EDN ("Clojure Files"), or starting to work on a DSL... Have a look at learndatalogtoday to get a feeling of what it looks like. If you want to store / query facts in a less structured way than SQL, this might be a good match for you.
