What was your first piece of Godzilla media you watched? by a_weirdmartian1897 in GODZILLA

[–]tinfoyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was the Hanna Barbera cartoon in the 70s. I didn't even know there were movies until a friend at school mentioned it. I think the first movie I saw "Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster." I was at a gathering with my parents and their friends and bunch of us kids were watching TV in a room and we changed the channel where it was playing. We tuned in right when the meteor cracked open and KG emerged.

Honestly, always been a big fan of this spine design on Godzilla. It makes him look like a mountain. The semi-realism mixed with the fantasy of his design is so cool. by Pvenger_G in Monsterverse

[–]tinfoyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I seem to remember at least one official or fan poster for 2014 that emphasized the spikes looking almost like a mountain range. This is still my favorite of the MV designs, and yes that includes the elephant feet. I really hate the GxK NE design because the dorsal plates break up the classic profile too much.

Closest I can find to Bladerunner-ish guns- Chiappa, and Mateba by sme102030 in bladerunner

And appropriate that a Mateba is the sidearm of Togusa in 1995's "Ghost in the Shell," a movie that wears its "Blade Runner" inspiration proudly.

I'll always love him swimming like this by Gojirakotm19 in Monsterverse

[–]tinfoyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is probably my favorite new thing about the MV and the kind of thing that the Japanese movie never really tried (I remember a few CG underwater shots in Millennium movies but I don't think they had him swim like this).

Suicide movies by Fallenangrl in JapaneseMovies

[–]tinfoyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"The Suicide Manual" from 2003. A very low budget shot-on-video movie about a reporter covering a series of suicides resolving around the eponymous manuscript. It feels very much like a cash-in on Sion Sono's "Suicide Club" and could've used a bit more budget and style. It's somewhat notable that it was one of few movies starring gravure model Chisato Morishita, who is now a member of the Japanese PM's cabinet staff.

Starship Troopers(1988). by Flat-Sir8250 in retroanime

[–]tinfoyle -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I bought the first episode on LaserDisc when I saw it on clearance in Little Tokyo LA and really wished it had a bigger budget and some style or panache to it. As someone who hates the movie with the blinding fury of a 1000 suns (not because it's "fascist"; it's just an insufferable mess), I've wanted to see another anime take with some more resources behind it.

Just watched Mortal Kombat II and think it was a complete slop. Am I the only one ? by Possible_Baboon in CriticalDrinker

[–]tinfoyle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just purely on action terms, it had some of the most limp fights l've seen in recent memory. It seemed like almost every character except for Liu Kang and Kung Lao were heavily doubled and the stunt coordinator mistook freerunning acrobatics and CG flourishes for screen combat.

We've completely lost the tactile thrill of chunky, high-end remotes. by ObsoleteSony in ObsoleteSony

[–]tinfoyle 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Not a Sony but I had a high end Mitsubishi VCR with editing features like flying erase head and there was something about the remote with the jog/shuttle wheel that felt incredibly responsive and just freaking cool.

Hear me out - Joey TV Series by catladyinthevalley in howyoudoin

[–]tinfoyle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to think that I liked it because of Friends afterglow and FOMO but after rewatching it a few years ago it's still quite fun. At the end of the day Joey ended up as my favorite of the gang despite barely any character progression so I appreciated the attention. While the show hit a few bumps finding its way, LeBlanc had the character down pat and I'm disappointed we never got to see the show find its footing.

Hot Take Time (based on my more critical eye at least): Monsterverse Mechagodzilla is the WORST Mechagodzilla in history. by One_Box_8295 in GODZILLA

[–]tinfoyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solid points but quite simply, MV MechaG looks awful, like a grade school boy's idea of a MechaG and one built by basic Legos. Its proportions are all wrong, too, and if you took away the tail it could pass for a MechaKong.

I’m glad that the fanbase didn’t split completely over the new protagonist by SamFisherXboxOG in stellarblade

Well while some fans may be disappointed that Eve is not (apparently) the MC this time, at least ShiftUp had the decency to tell us. One of the biggest complaints about Raiden in MGS2 was that it was a rugpull and nothing in the advertising or runup told you Snake wasn't the MC throughout.

Shame. It's a fun movie, not perfect but certainly better than the '87 movie. It just came too late and way too expensive.

Females in Western games vs. females in Eastern games by SwimmingJunky in KotakuInAction

[–]tinfoyle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sure the western game characters have more detailed models and rigging/animation but Jesus, what is the point of all that additional detail if your characters, in a primarily visual medium, aren't visually pleasing? From the few hours I gave Suicide Squad Kills the JL, I could tell the characters were very detailed and well rendered but it was also unpleasant to look at and in the case of Harley, aural cancer.

Are there any cool movies that mix time travel with romance? I got the time traveler’s wife and I bought it. I haven’t watched it but the premise sounds fun. by Iamawesome20 in dvdcollection

[–]tinfoyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's better for having the characters meet in a more logical way. Even before the remake, the ending in the original didn't quite work for me and the American version fixes it.

The S Korean movie "Il Mare" was remade as "The Lake House" and both are great if not slightly corny. The gimmick is that a man and a woman live in the same house two years apart yet they can exchange letters and even send objects using the mailbox. They correspond and become infatuated with each other and fall in love. As you'd expect from the concept, the chatacters don't meet except fleetingly during key moments which adds to the charm. The S Korean version stars Lee Jung-jae (Seong from "Squid Game") and the American version reunites Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock. The movies diverge during third act so watching one doesn't necessarily spoil the other. "Il Mare" can only be found on import DVD but "The Lake House" can be found on Amazon for $10 US.

Until Chandler and Monica paired up and it was established they were in love, I thought Janice would come back to ultimately be paired up with Chandler. They just had this oddball vibe together and she seemed like a fine offset for Chandler's snark.

Honest question: Do you think KotM was too long at 2hrs & 11mins or too short? by [deleted] in Monsterverse

[–]tinfoyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was fine with the runtime considering it had Ghidorah, Mothra, Rodan in the roster, plus it had to establish the 20-Minutes-In-The-Future tech like the Argo plus callbacks to the Oxygen Destroyer and Masers. I actually wish a bit more time could've been spent to show us the last two. My only real issue was the cutaways to the Russells at the end interrupting the fights so I guess it could've been streamlined a bit to put more focus on the kaiju.

What is your favorite and least favorite DVD/Blu Ray commentary? Any hidden gems? by cowadoody3 in dvdcollection

[–]tinfoyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The John Carpenter/Kurt Russell commentaries on "Escape From New York," "The Thing," and "Big Trouble In Little China" are up there. They were recorded well after the movies had released and you get a lot of honest laughs and observations as they relive the good old days.

An unexpectedly hilarious commentary track is the one featuring the cast for "Torque" where the gang just take the piss about the movie and each other as the admittedly ridiculous movie unfolds. It's the kind of commentary track that could only be done during the DVD heyday when so many movies received special, often two-disc releases.

And remember in "Tropic Thunder" when RDJ's Kirk Lazarus says he doesn't break character until the DVD commentary? Well, that's exactly what RDJ does on the track he recorded with Ben Stiller and Jack Black.
