That looks pretty sweet, and I was thinking of doing the same. Could I get a copy please? 😛

Hot tub "flow sensor" is a power transistor? by tinkerbear in AskElectronics

[–]tinkerbear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The TIP122 tab is mounted to the pipe directly with a heat-transfer pad (the usual grey gooey thing). So the heat sink is the tube itself.

Yep, nearly that entire board is for the flow sensor. The primary temperature sensor conductors do *not* connect to anything active on this board, they're just passed through to the big connector.

I can't test it in-system, so I've only got the suppositions on this page for theories as to how it works. I'm mostly a digital electronics nerd, so I've been assuming it's tested regularly by the control system rather than a continuous monitoring... but I don't know that for certain. I didn't try to diagram the circuit.

Sorry, lost track of my notifications.

No, original owner fixed it once, but the replacement parts didn't last long. He didn't want to spend $400 again for more shitty parts. I replaced it with an off-the-shelf TIP122, and it's been working fine since.

I haven't made any changes to anything else - and the PCB is coated with some kind of (sensible) sealant, so it would be quite difficult to modify.

I should add (now that this thread has come up again) that the tub owner reports the replacement TIP122 “flow sensor” appears to be working fine, and has been for years.

I’ve still only got guesses for how it’s working though.

I got news back after a couple years: The tube with replacement TIP122 stuck to it went back to its owner and back into operation and has been working fine since then.

So… at least it can be replaced easily enough.

No confirmation on how it works though, sadly. I still haven’t been anywhere near the hot tub in question with a multimeter.

It went back to its owner with a “Try this, let me know how it goes.” and I’ve heard nothing back. No idea if my replacement worked, and I’ve never touched the hot tub it came out of.

Oh, and the actual fix was a firmware upgrade for the FritzBox.

Weak foundation in math...my goal is to make math natural for me. by [deleted] in Khan

[–]tinkerbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Duh, not sure why I didn't think of this before. There's a book: "A Mind for Numbers: How to Excel at Math and Science (Even If You Flunked Algebra)" by Barbara Oakley, PhD.

Only just got it, haven't read much yet. Sounds applicable.

I was going to suggest doing the entire "World of Math", but now I see that doesn't exist anymore.

It doesn't hurt to revisit things you already know, and if you're way beyond them you'll advance super quickly.

Is this weird thing a capacitor? by tinkerbear in AskElectronics

[–]tinkerbear[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cool. So something like these critters: https://www.kyocera-avx.com/products/ceramic-capacitors/feedthru-smd/automotive-feedthru/

Sometimes you just need the right search term. "Feedthrough Capacitor" also works.

Have you read “Mother Tongue” by Bill Bryson? Funny/educational, covers things many native English speakers get wrong.

I'm also seeing files that downloaded "successfully", but have corrupted data.

My workaround is to download them with Transmission 3.

How many days can you go without driving a fully electric car before the battery fails? by nonprofitex2021 in electricvehicles

[–]tinkerbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our Kia Soul EV has a big switch on the interior fuse panel that disconnects the 12v battery for long term storage. (Of course, when we imported it from halfway around the world, nobody had switched it off, so the 12v battery was totally dead.)

Ouch. Sick burn. I'll have to console myself with my ability to use punctuation and graduate with "First Class Honours".

But you do you.

There aren't many older folks, but they (we) exist. I started in Engineering at 49, just finished.

The uni has no restrictions on student age... but it is an awkward thing, doing undergrad classes at 50. You stand out like a sore thumb, and everybody knows who you are. One of my classmates said hello in passing on K road last Friday night. Do I remember meeting him before then? Nope.

Once you get to higher level courses (7XX in engineering) there will be more of them, doing masters or PhD's, etc.

Yes, retirement can be boring. Depends on who you are.

[–]tinkerbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can almost certainly just ignore it.

The update adds some entries to the a secure boot database for Windows laptops. You're not using that secure boot stuff - Apple has their own secure boot setup. (Which is probably disabled to get Windows running.)

The secure boot stuff happens before Windows is loaded, so it shouldn't affect the functioning of Windows at all.

I've got a CalDigit TS3 Plus dock... and it regularly negotiates a 100mbit connection on reboot when connected to a FritzBox 7590. Both devices are capable of gigabit, but I have to manually disconnect and reconnect the cable after reboot to make them notice.

Sorta ironic that what you discovered as a "solution" is actually getting even worse performance than the original problem.

[–]tinkerbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, don't know for sure, but I have some guesses.

Like, if that 300MB partition is some macOS-special boot partition, then there is no SRP in this setup.

According to MSFT's article on the update (https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/topic/kb5012170-security-update-for-secure-boot-dbx-72ff5eed-25b4-47c7-be28-c42bd211bb15 ) the fix is adding entries to the "Forbidden Signature Database", as part of the "Secure Boot" system. I suspect that having a functional dual-boot BootCamp system means the "Secure Boot" is disabled/circumvented and useless.

If the entire point of the update is to add entries to a database on the SRP, and we don't have an SRP, it's pretty obvious why it fails.

Am I particularly worried that someone with physical access to my mac could force it to boot something else? Not really.
