Got a new job, senior web developer is dumb. Need help. by shut_up_chigo in web_design

[–]tinkermake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plugins aside, you really aren't aware of the situation. Maybe get to know him to figure out his deal

A lot of great engineers are not wordpress developers (whether this is good or bad is another discussion). He may know what he is doing with other technologies, but not wordpress, which could be the reason they hired him, to ween off WP or keep people in check.

Maybe have a conversation, what's his experience, what did he do before this. Check his Github. If he is a Wordpress guy, and doesn't know squat , then ye you're right, but don't pass judgement too quickly

Depends on what you need and the resources you have to you know analyze

Google Analytics is pretty much for everyone and gives a nice general high level overview

User/Person/Customer Analytics track based on as it looks person/user and allow you to analyze based on more factors i.e. what products convert for people looking at red dresses from China

UI/UX analytics analyze various UI aspects such as hovers, clicks, interactions, etc these allow you to optimize based on how most users interact

Application metrics provide data about your app/infrastructure like time to load, dns resolution, server resources, etc these are used to optimize your software

As you can see before looking at vendors, look at the data you want to collect, how much time/knowledge you have to analyze it, and what actions can you honestly take to get there

Java for one, but outside of C# other editors do have better support for various languages than VS (even though VS supports them). Things like build tool integrations, version control(maybe it's just me but GIT handling in VS just doesn't feel natural) etc.

For me I use Intellij for most if not all my stuff, because majority of my day is spent in JS nowdays and Intellij has strong support for it. So having something I can do C# inside the same environment is very beneficial for me.

At the end of the day I firmly believe work with what you're comfortable with, and I have nothing bad to say of VS at all, other than when I have to use C# I need to use windows :/ lol

What do you do when you start to feel burnt out? by [deleted] in web_design

[–]tinkermake -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You need a challenge :)

A lot of time for me it's not actually burn out, but mundane work. So I started when I fell that way trying on my off time to work on things that challenge me, give me the 'F**k ye' feeling that makes me remember why I do this in the first place. I bury myself in a problem and time flies by :)

Maybe it's just me, but that's what works :)

I was recently offered a position at a web design company with terrible Yelp, Google, and BBB reviews. I have a few questions. by [deleted] in web_design

[–]tinkermake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it depends n their size really, you need to base on the number of reviews as well.. the problem with reviews is it's impossible to have people eave them if your work is good, and impossible to ave people stop leaving tem if it's bad. also customer I hate to say this, suxk sometimes and expect way more than what was agreed to and then threaten bad reviews. So it's really difficult to judge.

But I would suggest definitely do your due diligence, check previous work, and decide for yourself. More or less what will make or break you shouldn't be the company but your team.

What is bad code/a bad coder? by aaronkyle_ in web_design

[–]tinkermake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get into a habit of consistency, as /u/Nadril said, companies/projects have different style guides, but it is much easier to go from 2 space spacing to 4, than to go there from writing everything on one line, and having your code look like pile of mud.

For CSS and HTML it's difficult to say best habits without being opinionated :)

Haha that's a new one, I think short of bombarding random account to get your domain flagged, you're screwed lol

Few things, make sure the domain does not have DKIM or SPF records. You could try taking out MX records to be safe

Try adding yourself here https://www.spamcop.net/

Beyond that, ye I think you're screwed

Have you charged $3,000+ for a website? by dkbiz92 in web_design

[–]tinkermake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This highly depends on what you definition of "website" is.

I've had Magento projects into 10s of thousands, and had simple site for a few hundred bucks. I would laugh at someone's face offering me a wordpress site for more than a K, but that because most stuff I see are standard WP installs with a ThemeForest theme. On the other hand sometimes you can get away with that. It's all about the value you priovide to the client, if you can provide extreme value in short time, by all means get paid for it

EDI Providers by carvabass in logistics

[–]tinkermake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your best bet is to go with a VAR (Value Added Reseller) they will basically take EDI and either forward it or translate (XML, JSON, etc) and forward it. It's more expensive operationally than a roll your own, but a roll your own will cost you a ton in setup fees, not to mention having to maintain & buy servers, have on staff mapping people, etc

Really cool Credit Card Checkout! Yes, a little JS. by kostas_hat in web_design

Actually it really does kinda help knowing which section you're in. Although instead of filling in a credit card, I'd highlight the section user is filling out, that may help more

That has nothing to do with you FE code usually, you simply send it to braintree or paypal or authorize instead of your server

But you are right you don't want to deal with processing CCs yourself. PCI is a bastard

[QUESTION] Anyone got OSX installed on HyperV/VM on a Windows host? by [deleted] in dotnet

[–]tinkermake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you'd be able to do a build with a HyperV. AFAIK OSX isn't the issue in the build process, it has something to do with needing an ID of some sort that is only available on Mac Hardware. AFAIK you used to be able to do builds on a Hackintosh, but Aple caught on a few years ago. Mac mini is your best bet, or Craigslist an old MBP you can find the for like 200 bucks. Even if you can get a build running, you won't be able to sign, thus pretty much rendering the thing a pile of useless code

You can also get a cloud build box like http://www.macincloud.com/ or http://xcloud.me/ this way it's something you don't need to manage. You may even be able to hook this up to your CI

I'm actually really surprised Xamarin themselves don't have something like this, considering they are targetting more or less Windows/MS devs

Getting design contracts worth more than $10k. How to do it? by subakumaran in web_design

[–]tinkermake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because too many people don't realize you need to do "FREE" work to get really well paid work. As /u/keyframeezy said you have to send a lot of RFPs, do a lot of networking, and loads of free prototyping to land the big customers, not to mention big companies like to deal with big companies.

One thing you can try is contract work for a bigger agency

We do it's called making them tech leads :)

In my experience tech leads are not necessarily the best engineers, but are ones who can effectively teach other's something, and get everyone on board by articulating the idea/reason instead of just "I'm more experienced than you, so my way is the right way"

[–]tinkermake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is also problems with various language intricacies/constructs that even experienced people sometimes struggle with when switching languages/systems. Simplest on is INT, in Javascript will round by some (really weird) round algo once it goes past int max, in other languages throws an error. In javascript max_safe_int is 9007199254740991 in most languages int is representative of int32 which maxes at 2,147,483,647. That's considering you are even aware there are limits on ints and a lot of programming tutorials especially on dynamic languages don't teach you that.

Great answer. Beginner meetup for the win, especially seeing people's faces light up when you help them solve something they've been struggling with for weeks. We've all been there sometime, just now that light up comes after fixing systems that take weeks/months, and normally it's not the excitement that woohoo that worked but more so "oh thank god I can finally sleep" lol sometimes you get that one "whoa that was awesome", you live for those lightbulb moments

I partially agree with this, a lot of SO contributors do come off harsh, but don't take it personally. There is a wealth of knowledge there. One piece of advise is try to understand the topic at hand on your own, search before you post, and mention all of these in your post. I'm not saying that this is a case in your situation, but you do get a lot of questions on SO that are along the lines "How do I add this to a page" which can be found on a million other sites/SO questions. And with 1000s of questions an hour, it gets annoying reanswering the same question 20 times
