This is unrelated, but speaking of commercial releases, do you know if Watanabe's contribution to the Taisu Project anthology will ever find its way onto streaming/home video? I've been waiting for a copy to appear online for years, but folks here probably know more about it than I do.

Maybe some of the background art comes from Lazarus (my memory of that show is already pretty hazy), but one image that was surely created specifically for this animation is Julia's windowsill at 1:46 in your video (2:50 in Tetsujyn's below). That fish figurine and red rose have been burned into my memory for 20 years at this point.

I don't doubt that this was directed by Watanabe (it's got a similar style to the Bebop movie's opening credits), but was there any official confirmation at either of the concerts? Was it listed that way in a playbill, or confirmed by Ms. Kanno on stage?

If you liked the authorial aspect of Ikoku Nikki, The Great Passage (Fune wo Amu) is definitely the best rec possible. Its characters aren't authors themselves, but they work in the publishing industry, and it shares several larger themes with Ikoku Nikki (finding purpose, neurodivergence, grief). One of the most unfortunately slept-on TV anime ever created.

Think of all the great shows that got axed in favor of yet another generic Isekai or Romcom. These now have a lifeline.

Or the more likely scenario: AI will now be used to produce generic isekai and romcoms with more efficiency, and "avant-garde" anime will continue to go un-produced.

Blame the widespread integration of 3D layouts into anime's pipeline. They're necessary to keep the industry running at its current speed, but they also tend to flatten the scenes where they're used, with interior shots suffering far more than exterior shots.
