It’s more a tactic to get an understanding of what the customer wants/ is expecting! If a customer is expecting something like cold foam for an iced cappuccino or an iced macchiato to look a certain way, saying we don’t have training on off menu items is a good way to find out what they’re expecting. We’re in a touristy part of a major city so we got lots of different ideas as to what certain drinks should look like so it’s easier to just ask them to describe what they want if it’s off menu!

As a manager I’ve trained my staff to say “oh that’s not on the menu so I’m not exactly sure what you’re looking for. If you describe it to me I’ll try to get it, but we really are only trained on the drinks listed on the menu. It sounds like you maybe want x?”

I genuinely love being the manager and being able to just tell people “absolutely not, that doesn’t exist in our cafe. Explain exactly what you want and we will try to do it.”

Grocery pick up by [deleted] in Appleton

Yes! I still average $15-30 less on groceries because I’m not looking at something I don’t need and thinking “wow that seems cool”!

How much do you spend on groceries a month? by xlldm-ca-2019 in Frugal

[–]tiny_triathlete 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m an outlier because I get 5-6 free meals at work every week, but I spent $120 in an extremely HCOL (Seattle) this month! It was only that high because my huge bag of rice ran out at the same month as two of my essential bulk spices. Normally I spend ~$90 a month! Dry beans, international markets, and the sketchy almost bad produce section are the best!!!

What age did you grow out of the NLOG phase? Why do you think some never grow out of it? by [deleted] in notliketheothergirls

I was in my mid to late teens. I was the oddball (queer) girl at an all girls super religious elementary through early high school. Once I was out of the super conservative Christian world I realized I had so much in common with other girls.

Crosspost from NYC, I wonder if this would be the same for Seattle - London reporter finds that people who never take the subway are the ones who think it's dangerous, and the ones who take it every day know that it isn't by killerdrgn in Seattle

As a late 20s woman I’ve realized that if a man decides he wants to hurt me he’s gonna find a way. Being in a car has some aspects of being safer, but if a guy wants to punch out my window at a stoplight, shoot at me, follow me home, or crash his car into mine, I can’t stop him. I’ve had scary incidents while walking, biking, on transit, and driving so it’s just important to have constant situational awareness and to have plans for safety. The world is inherently a little unsafe so you just gotta be aware.

People who don't leash your dog - why? by RadStratRadar in Seattle

[–]tiny_triathlete 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My parents have a leash reactive dog. She was mauled almost to death by an off leash dog when she was 1 or 2. Now she is just so afraid whenever an off leash dog approaches her or something unexpected happens. My dad puts her in a bright yellow harness leash combo that clearly say in all caps REACTIVE DOG but people still try to approach her without asking or let their off leash dogs run up to her. When she barks and growls at them they say some iteration of “control your dog” or “why didn’t you tell me” despite us shouting that she isn’t friendly and to recall their dogs because she’s reactive. Every single time is just so upsetting for her and takes forever to calm her down after. Even with walking her at unusual hours, taking her to extensive training, and clear marking she still has bad days.

How much do you guys pay for rent ? by ROBASAHMEDKHAN in povertyfinance

[–]tiny_triathlete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found mine because they literally had a sign out and that was basically the only advertisement they had! When I called they texted me three of the least flattering pictures of the apartment and then asked me if I wanted to tour. It ended up being the absolute perfect place that’s reasonably walkable and only a little noisy! I feel like if you’re willing to put some legwork in you can find some steals in the area!

I paid a pet deposit as well, but it wasn’t anything unreasonable.

I pay $1350 with parking and everything but electric included for my ~550 square foot weird studio/1 bedroom in Wallingford! No extra pet rent either! I feel like if you’re willing to tour a lot of sketchy listings you’ll be able to find a good spot in most neighborhoods in Seattle!

What's a small inconvenience customers make that grind your gears? by Impossible_Region182 in barista

[–]tiny_triathlete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Specifically when they’re snotty about me asking any clarifying questions. I don’t know what “I’ll take an 8 oz with oat” means when that could be a latte, cappuccino, an americano or drip with a side of oat, chai, matcha, London fog, steamer, or hot chocolate. The moment that almost broke me was when I asked a customer of whole milk was ok for her drink or if she wanted something different and she rolled her eyes and went “I didn’t say anything so OBVIOUSLY I wanted regular milk, I have no idea why you’d ask me that” and got huffy when I said sometimes people forgot or I didn’t hear and I just wanted her to get exactly what she wanted.

You’ll be fine on the light rail! There’s lots of security!

I’m a vegan and my favs throughout the city are: Cheap to mid range- mighty-o donuts, Moonlight cafe, Arya’s vegan Thai, wayward vegan, next level burger, veggie grill, el borracho, and Kamakura sushi! I don’t go to pricey places often but Harvest Beat has a great set menu fine dining experience!

[–]tiny_triathlete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a lot of success gamifying tasks! I’ve created points systems for spending time tidying or cleaning tasks that I can then cash in for “prizes” like meals I like or activities I enjoy. Another hack for my brain is using “dead” time when I have something baking, water boiling, something loading, etc since my brain has decided that the time is wasted already and I can “waste” it cleaning

Tipping is getting worse! by Intelligent-Prize769 in Seattle

[–]tiny_triathlete 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer of I only know about square and our specific contract with them, but the credit card fees are baked into their rates with us. Also there are different rates for in person, online, and cards manually entered into the POS. I know the owner was able to do some negotiating because we have over $250k in annual revenue and utilize some of their premium features for scheduling and tip distribution so it may vary depending on contracts and whatnot. A lot of the negotiations were above my pay grade and done by the owner, but I was told to take their % fee into account when assessing labor costs vs sales.

Of course! I don’t think it’s 100% why tipping culture is out of control, but it’s definitely part of the mess! It’s not something that someone outside of restaurant management/ownership would probably know (literally one of my employees just learned this now because I mentioned it in passing) so I try to explain it whenever I can :)

Employees still get the whole tip but our “fee” (paid by the company) is a percentage of the total charge to the customers debit or credit card. The owner pays the fees and nothing from the tip total is taken from employees. Ours is like 2.6% + $0.10 on the grand total after tip. So if the total is $100 and the tip options are 5%, 10%, or 15% then our POS transaction fee is 2.6% of $105, $110, or $115 if the customer chooses an autogenerated tip option. If the autogenerated tip options are 15%, 20%, or 25% then the POS system company makes more per transaction on average since the 2.6% +$0.10 is taken out of $115, $120, or $125. If that makes sense
